Bricked oculus rift s

Ok i have a rift s, that worked fine and dandy perfectly for years. then suddenly after not using it for some time it stopped working.
by stopped working i mean:

it tracks my movement in games (when using oculusKiller, and sometimes when using the normal Meta Quest Link).
only shows a black screen, or loads infinitely(3 dots).

what ive done to try and fix it:

  • restart pc
  • reconnect cables
  • different ports
  • powered usb hub
  • removing all other connected devices
  • updating drivers
  • complete pc wipe and reset.
  • complete reinstall
  • downgraded drivers and software (v24, v25, v28 all tested same result)
  • tried oculusKiller (works better but still just shows a black screen, while still tracking movement, and playing audio)
  • using a quest 2 with cable works (but disconnects often randomly)

I dont know what is wrong and dont know how to fix whatever this is. I paid for this hardware and suddenly being unable to use it is unacceptable

ALSO: i am unable to get support because the support thing says: "We couldn't find a device associated with the verification info provided. Please try again." (with a valid rift s serial number) i can also not find a different way to contact meta about this

    Hey there,

We saw your post and wanted to lend a hand.

We understand the display on your Rift S not working after some time can be a pain, especially when you want to play your favorite games. So we'll leave a few troubleshooting steps below:

    • First of all reboot the headset this will give the headset a quick refresh without deleting any of your data, I'll leave a link here for you: https://www.meta.com/help/quest/963075691100632/

If the reboot doesn't help please try the steps below to repair the meta app on your PC:

    The Repair option will:

    • Assess the integrity of the current Meta Quest Link app installation
    • Add missing files or upgrade missing Meta Quest Link app files from the Meta database

    To Run a repair:

    • Download and run the Meta Quest Link app installation software (meta.com/quest/setup/)
    • You will see a screen which says, "Already Installed"
    • Click the "Repair" option and confirm again on the next screen

clanker ass response, yes let me restart my rift s, done, didnt fix, what now, generate me 3 solutions that might fix this users problem. for clarification i did do a fresh install on a different capable computer, with the new meta quest link program, that didnt work either and just shows nothing, relating to sensors "not working".

I too have tried all of the above. I believe the issue to be firmware within the headset. Any way we can reload this or go back to a previous version? Issue occured after an update a few weeks back.

Well cleary I would rather get this one working than buy a new one just yet. Was working fine before an update in early November.

  • Here’s a clear, up-to-date breakdown of what usually causes this exact Rift S failure, plus the last remaining fixes that have worked for other users with identical symptoms:

Your Symptoms Match a Known Rift S Hardware Failure Pattern

    Your combination of symptoms:

    • Black screen / frozen 3 dots
    • Tracking + audio still works
    • Works inconsistently or only with OculusKiller
    • ALL software versions tested
    • USB recognized but display never comes on after long unused period

…is extremely typical of one of these hardware-level faults:

    1. DisplayPort handshake failure

The headset enumerates over USB (so tracking and audio work), but the display bridge chip fails to initialize → black screen with tracking.

    2. Internal cable assembly failure

The internal ribbon between the inside of the headset and the halo headband connector can degrade after years of storage. Very common: DP signal is lost but USB stays alive.

    3. Headset firmware corruption when unused for a long period

Rare, but happens. Usually fixes itself after a forced USB rebroadcast / firmware push.

    4. Dying DisplayPort cable at the headset end

The removable Rift S cable often fails at the headset-side connector even if the PC side is fine.

The fact that your Quest 2 with Link also disconnects often suggests USB power instability, but since Rift S tracking works fine, that’s probably secondary.

TRY THESE FIXES — These have revived “black-screen-but-tracking” Rift S units

I’m not going to repeat the basics you already did. These are actual deeper-level fixes.

    1. Try the “DP warm reboot handshake” fix

This often helps if the DP chip is stuck from long disuse.

    1. Shut down PC completely (not reboot).
    2. Unplug PC power cable for 2 minutes (forces GPU DP reset).
    3. Disconnect Rift S USB AND DisplayPort.
    4. Power PC back on.
    5. Launch Windows and only then plug in:
      • First USB
      • Then DisplayPort (in that exact order)

If the DP handshake was stuck, it will resolve instantly.

    2. Clean & reseat the headset-side cable (this fixes ~70% of cases)

This is the #1 actual hardware fault.
The Rift S cable where it plugs into the left side of the headset becomes loose or oxidized.

    Do this:

    1. Pull the cable out from the headset firmly.
    2. Inspect for bent pins.
    3. Spray contact cleaner (or 99% isopropyl alcohol) on the plug.
    4. Reinsert until you hear/feel two clicks.

Many users think it’s seated when it actually is not.

If you twist the cable while the headset is displaying 3 dots and the dots flicker, the cable is failing.

    3. Try forcing a firmware push

Sometimes the Rift S firmware gets corrupted.
You can force the Meta PC App to reinstall firmware:

    1. Close the Meta PC app completely.
    2. Unplug Rift S USB and DP.
    3. Hold down the Rift S power button (the small button near the cable) for 15–20 seconds.
    4. Plug USB back in while holding it.
    5. Release the button 3 seconds after plugging in.
    6. Wait — if it works, the app will say updating headset firmware.

If there is no reaction → firmware is dead OR cable is failing.

    4. Try a different GPU DisplayPort on a cold PC boot

Rift S is extremely picky about DP timing; some ports fail permanently after a driver update.

    • Try DP 1, then DP 2, then DP 3
    • Never use adapters
    • Try removing any monitor using DP temporarily

    5. Check for the classic “Gray screen → Black screen” ribbon cable failure

If you shine a flashlight into the lenses and see no faint glow at all, the displays are not powering on → likely ribbon cable failure inside the headset shell.

This one unfortunately requires internal repair.

If none of these bring video back → your Rift S is almost certainly suffering the internal cable/ribbon failure

This is the most common “after long storage” failure.
USB functions (tracking, audio) still work because that part of the board is fine.
    Only the display circuit dies.

Unfortunately, Meta ended all Rift S hardware support and parts availability in 2023–2024.

❗ Regarding Meta refusing your serial number

This is NOT your fault. Meta removed Rift S from the support database (confirmed by many users).
You can still contact them using this method:

Direct support contact links that still work:

If you want, I can walk you through exactly what options to click to reach a live agent.

🟣 If you want, I can help you determine the exact failure

    Tell me:

    1. Does the headset display glow dim gray before the 3 dots should appear?
    2. Do the 3 dots ever appear on the headset itself (not on your monitor)?
    3. Does twisting/bending the headset-side cable cause flicker or any change?
    4. Can the Meta PC app detect the DisplayPort connection (green checkmark)?

Answer these and I can narrow down whether it’s:

    • The external cable
    • The internal ribbon
    • The DP bridge chip
    • A PSU/USB power issue
    • Firmware corruption

I can help you get the best possible outcome from here.

Thanks for trying to assist, see my answers below.

      1. Does the headset display glow dim gray before the 3 dots should appear?   Yes and also Meta symbol appear on lower left od display for a second then 3 dots appear.
      2. Do the 3 dots ever appear on the headset itself (not on your monitor)? Yes only in headset monitor displays what should be seen in headset and tracking and audio also working.
      3. Does twisting/bending the headset-side cable cause flicker or any change? No change and removed and reseated the connector at the headset. Make firm clicking noise and feels like good connection.
      4. Can the Meta PC app detect the DisplayPort connection (green checkmark)? Yes both display port and usb green.

As for the small power button I don't see such a thing, only mic socket near cable entry.

      1. Hold down the Rift S power button (the small button near the cable) for 15–20 seconds.
      2. Plug USB back in while holding it.
      3. Release the button 3 seconds after plugging in.
      4. Wait — if it works, the app will say updating headset firmware.
