Increased battery drain/usage on Meta Quest 3 after v77

After the firmware patch v77 i noticed on my Meta Quest 3 a major battery consumption increase both in standalone mode and PCVR mode.

To test in a controlled way, as much as possible without specific techs, i did a typical game session with the same apps with the same settings as one week ago and the headset duration was 2 hour less than usual (wich i shouldn't have to remark how drastic and obvious that something is not working as before).

I use an headstrap with a battery pack that until now it reliably gave me around 5 hour of gameplay in the same conditions that now give me 3 total (battery and integrated battery of the hmd).
I have serious doubts that in less than 2 days the external battery or the internal battery went from new to out of service.

I have to add further that after the firmware update v77 i noticed a noticeable increase in the hedset fan speed, to the point where now i can hear it. Unlike before in the same conditions.

Also if i connect the headset to a wall plug, bypassing the external battery, the quest 3 drop slowly its charge to around 80%, that wasen't the case before, it was able to keep the charge.

  • Same issue here.

My metaquest is new, but after recent firmware update v.77, the battery drains dramatically before your eyes even without using apps.

  • I loaded public beta 78 and now all seems well I can charge up to 100% and power drain (basic testing) seems ok.

  • With non-ptc v77.1026 my Q3/512Gb with Q3 Elite battery strap seems to have about the same runtimes.  I get about 2.5-3hrs standalone and 3-3.5hrs with Air Link.  Headset brightness at ~85%.  My Q3 controller batteries (AA Duracell) still seem to last forever with haptics = low-med.

One issue I did find after the v77 update was that in order to get my Elite strap battery and headset battery in sync, I needed to charge each separately (each to 100%, green).  Afterwards, they charged up together fine.  So, maybe yours will go back to normal after a few charge cycles.

I also found with the latest meta-link pc app to turn it off properly I need to popup the lower right taskbar, right click on the meta icon, and select exit.

  • I prefer not to load public beta since might be even more unstable and the only way out is a factory reset.

Also i have to add that on v77.1027 i have problems charging the headset with the wall plug. It doesen't happen always, but it happened that it stays at 30% without charing up, or once happened that it even drops battery charge down to 5%.

I also got non-ptc v77.1027 on my Q3 with Q3 Elite battery strap a few days ago.  Like other recent updates, I found I needed to charge both the strap battery and headset battery separately (till both = green, then another 1/2 hour).  After that they both seem to charge up together fine.  Overall runtimes with Standalone and PCVR with Link and Air Link seem to be about the same.

  • I too have the same issue.  My quest 3 also doesn't hold a charge when its shut down.  I would try not to keep it plugged in unless it needed to be charged but I have recently discovered that the battery drains regardless if its on or not.

  • I am also having this issue.

Interesting thing I noticed. Even when the headset is completely off the left lens (and occasionally the right one too) will intermittently flicker, like it's trying to power up the display. It will do this as long as the headset is plugged into a charger. Put on your powered down headset and see if yours is doing it too. I imagine this might be why folks can't charge to full right now.

      Thank you for your response.
I actually have experienced that happening upon shutting down my device. It seemed like it would not fully shut down. As if went into sleep mode.

I thought that maybe I had to keep the headset on until it powered down fully, But I still have the same issue.

I would keep it plugged in and charging overnight take it off the charger in the morning, and by the afternoon, it would be completely dead without me even turning it on.
Honestly, I’ve had more issues than I can count with the Meta quest 3. The quest 2 didn’t have nearly as many issues as I’ve experienced with the quest 3.  I almost feel like it was a waste of money at this point. I’m just patiently waiting for the “all-issues-included-super-mega-bug fix” lol
