OS Updates are not installing

Meta Quest 3

I am currently on v78.1027 and have been seeing available updates for v78.1028, v78.1029, v78.1030, and v78.1031.

Each time a new update becomes available, I attempt to install it. However, the update never succeeds, and my headset remains on v78.1027.

Furthermore, a failed update to v78.1030 seems to have changed something internally.

Now I frequently get a pop-up saying "Meta Horizon Shell" is not responding.
When I close an app, I see the options "Wait" or "Close app." If I choose "Wait," it gets stuck in an endless loop, so I always have to select "Close app." I am very worried that this isn't normal behavior and may be causing other issues.

  • I also installed v78.1030 and it still says I'm on v78.1027 (it's a known issue), but my headset (Quest 3) still seems to be working perfectly. Meta Support have been posting that we should wait for v79 which should fix the problem. In the mean time, you could try either a factory reset or try updating from your PC using the Meta Quest Software Update Tool.

This update randomly appeared again on mine too  looked like it was installed but wasn't. Mine is working perfectly too so no big issue. There's no point in factory resetting or using the Meta Quest Software Update tool, it just takes you back to v78.0 which I'm on. I was on v78.1026 before I did it.  This is more of a nuisance than anything else. My headset is working so well I'm more worried about v79 breaking something. Lol!

        Thank you for your reply.
It seems like v79 is the solution, assuming they don't introduce any new bugs!
If your headset is working without problems, I agree there's no need to take any risks. Let's wait for v79 together!

Thank you for the information and your reply. Thank you for the heads-up.
I must have missed the fact that this is a known issue. I will wait for the v79 update, as it sounds like that should resolve the problem.

Two days ago (10 Sep 2025) I had a "v79" (no additional numbers) update, about 4Mb in size, build 5115411.16430.520. After successful installation and restarting, my Quest 3 was on v79.1031 (same version as before the update).

Yesterday, I got a second update "v79" (no additional numbers) 7.13Mb on 12 Sep 2025, build 5115411.17040.520 "this build will automatically be installed on 12 Oct 2025". After restarting, my version number is still v79.1031 but the build number and installation date are correct.

A previous update three updates ago was supposedly v79.1033 but after restarting it said v79.1031 🙃.
