Quest 3S Doesn't Connect to PC via Cable Link
Hey guys, issue with the Quest 3S, trying to get it working for my PC VR setup and it's been a total nightmare since I got it.
I have been trying to diagnose this issue all day. I got the Quest 3S on Black Friday, and it took me about 5 hours to get it connected via the official Meta Cable Link USB-C cable to my computer, which is when this issue began. I have NO idea what I ended up doing that worked, because it randomly interfaced and let me connect to my PC after restarting both it and my computer separately about 30 times. I was very happy, and I had minor issues for 2 days. Come today, I've had nothing but major issues.
Essentially, what's going on, is that the computer & software never recognizes that the USB-C cable is plugged in. I have a B650 AORUS Elite AX V2 with the included 10G USB-C port on the back, which is where the Cable Link is plugged into. Funnily enough, the 3S charges and the orange LED turns on, but it doesn't give me the "USB connection" pop-up anymore and the software is not recognizing the headset whatsoever. This is basically exactly what it was doing when I bought it. Today, I was playing Half-Life: Alyx when I decided to take a break. I paused everything, put the headset down, and came back to a black screen. Refused to reconnect. Okay, I thought, I'll just restart the headset. After that, it never recognized the cable again.
It connects via AirLink no problem, but I have a very old home and the interference is horrible in here, so it's borderline unplayable with how choppy and unstable it is - it jumps everywhere and makes me extremely motion sick. I am now starting to get pretty upset that I just spent $400 ($299 on the headset & $80 on the cable + tax) on something that took me hours to get working for 2 days and now effectively doesn't work at all.
So far, I have: restarted both the headset and my PC dozens of times. Did not work. Totally removed the device from the Meta Link software and attempted to re-add it. Did not work. Added it with Air Link, and attempted to set up Cable Link after the fact to see if that would help. Did not work. Turned on dev mode on both the headset and software and attempted to re-add. Did not work. Factory reset the headset and attempted to re-add. Did not work. Used Revo Uninstaller to remove everything Oculus related on my PC in safe mode, restarted, reinstalled everything, attempted to re-add. Did not work. I'm at my wit's end.
Any suggestions?
I fixed it!
For anyone with this issue, what finally ended up working was a USB-C to USB-A adapter, and having the setting to immediately activate a Link session turned on via developer mode on the 3S itself. It now works flawlessly. Thank God for working at a computer shop where I can have easy access to these things for diagnosis.
I was going to seek other avenues to repair if the adapter solution did not work. I presume that the VD solution oculusness suggested would've also fixed it (possibly).
Ultimately still very confused because it worked in my USB-C 10G port with basically no problems other than software stuff up until yesterday, and that port has had zero issues for the entire time I've had this motherboard. I'm going to keep fiddling around with the connections, but for now, this is working. I will update if anything changes.
