Question

Black Screen randomly during gameplay

Like other posts, same symptoms not game dependent, power off and on, things work ok for a while then 3 dots, screen goes black, sometimes i still hear game, Thrill of the fight in background. If i move my head up and down, vigorously, i get the 3 dots then the game comes on where it left off. It's sporadic. But similar things are happening to others on here. I can't find the support phone number

Hey there, thank you for bringing this to the community! We understand how frustrating this is so let's see if we can do something about it. Sometimes a hard reboot or a factory reset resolves this issue. If neither of them work please open a support ticket here and kindly include all of the troubleshooting steps that you have taken to resolve this.

Try a Hard Reboot:

  • Turn off your headset. Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
  • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Boot Device and press the power button.
  • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

If that has no effect on the issue, then please perform a factory reset:

  • Turn off your headset.
  • Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
  • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory Reset and press the power button.
  • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

Note:

Make sure that your Oculus Quest is fully charged when you perform the factory reset. The factory reset will remove all data. Your apps from the Oculus Store can be downloaded again afterward. However, if you have transferred any personal files from your computer to your headset, they will be permanently removed. If you would like to backup any personal files from your Oculus Quest before the factory reset, please click here for instructions on how to transfer files to and from your Oculus Quest and your computer. Please let us know how it goes or if you need further assistance on this.

Hi Drewszthelegend  have you found any other relevant information concerning this issue?  Have you created a support ticket?

I did get a reply to do a hard reset, but looking at the symptoms, im very skeptical as to the problem, i have since learned that if firmly seat my head into the strap, the system will come back on, i basically have to push my head up into the headset while pulling the headset down, and then i get the 3 dots and things start working again. Again this doesn't happen all of the time, and hasn't been happening until recently like a month ago till now. I'm living with it for now, awaiting the next version of the Oculus vr unit, or maybe one of the new cutting edge units on the horizon.

This is pretty much my problem also. I have done a factory reset twice but it has not seemed to change the problem. I'm wondering if this is either (a) due to a recent update in the OS or (b) indicative of the sensor between the lenses failing (I think it tracks if the headset is being worn). It's pretty unstable right now...

Meta...anyone...any ideas on how to fix?

For me, it's the quest 2 does not think it's been put on. Try cover that sensor between two screens to debug this. Not sure if it's a hardware or software thing.

Dude quest 3 same issue sounds like they will never fix it 😒

I've tried every fix listed here and elsewhere so far zero luck fixing this issue.

I've never seen anyone post that they have resoled this issue when they have tried all the suggestions and still have this problem like me.

I even wasted $150 on brand new controllers hoping this would fix the issue somehow..

Extremely disappointed in this product and getting the Apple VR now instead...

Goodbye Metaverse wish I had a chance to try the "verse" before this issue bricked my headset!

This was happening to my wife when we swapped over playing. Turned out it was because of our height difference thinking she was out of bounds somehow.

Try holding the oculus button to recentre the game and see if it resolves the issue.

Yeah, this is my first experience with the Oculus Quest. I'm playing my brother's. I was going to buy one of my own, but not after playing it. This black (more like gray) screen issue makes the device completely unplayable. It happens 75% of the times i touch the headset to adjust it. You can still hear the music of the game and the haptic feedback(?) of menu items when you wave the controller over them. Even hard resetting the device doesn't fix it: on the password screen, after hard-resetting, you don't even have enough time to enter the password before it turns black (and not gray this time).. keep hard resetting over and over, and the same thing happens: black screen on the password screen after a few seconds of it displaying properly. I kept turning it off, putting it in the usb-c charger, gently dropping it face-down on a pillow, all in an attempt to get the device to reset and working again. Eventually it sometimes lets me enter the login password (the dot combination thing). But it's so painful to get to that point, and so unpredictable and inconsistent, that I just gave up trying to use it. I do not understand how this has been happening since the beginning of the year with no fix. This device is a joke. I love the wireless concept, but it doesn't count for anything if the screen keeps turning off while you're trying to play. (usually after gently touching the headset to adjust it a little.)

Holding the Oculus button on the controller like the user 2 comments above me suggested does not kick the display to life either. I can see the Oculus symbol on the screen with the circle going around it, but after it's done calibrating, nothing changes: still stuck on the empty gray screen with the game's music playing in the background. No warnings, no errors, no signs of what is wrong or how to fix it. Yikes. Pathetic.

Exact same issue as mine. This happens multiple times during a play. Same thing if I push my headset to my head or temporarily pull it away and put it back on the game comes alive. This is a TERRIBLE bug to have on VR shooters where moments like this is essentially the same as being blinded constantly in a fire fight!

Ive already put a support ticket forward, they asked me to factory reset, did that and its still an issue. I told them its the sensor in the front or an OS issue, its not unique to my situation and I know of a LOT of people that have this same problem. Of course, meta wont own up to any problems of their own instead they will just give run of the mill advice like "restart your headset" "do a factory reset" - Doing a factory reset doesn't do anything because you still load into the same buggy OS that is causing the problem.

I wonder if Pico has the same problems. I think I better go investigate.

Luckily I was allowed to RMA my headset and received a refurbished one in its place.  So far so good but it appears their is no other fix atm and it appears to be a severe hardware issue.  Hopefully they can squash this issue for good as it is a complete hardware failure when it happens!

Dude! How did you get a refurbished headset? Mine is always going black while the game is still going. It sucks when I'm trying to use the TRIPP app to meditate and it goes black and now I'm trying to get the stupid thing to show the images again. Not terribly relaxing.

I have the exact same problem as the OP. Like the OP, I also faced this issue while playing The Thrill of The Fight. Hard resets are definitely note working for me. One thing i want to note is that when the game goes dark, it is still playing in the background and my blocks work as well (meaning that the headset is still tracking my controllers). One weird thing is that when I go out of bounds, but not far enough to make the headset warn me, I am able to see everything perfectly and even play the game. However, I have to stay in that sweet spot in order to keep the game running and for me to be able to see, and if i move back in, the black screen comes back. Sometimes coming back into the boundary stop the game as well as make the screen black. Extremely annoying issue. Happens during every single gameplay. I hate itm

Hey there, SpreadsheetMan. Thank you for reaching out and bringing your black screen issues to our attention. Having something like that happen every time you play can definitely take all the fun out of your VR time, and we want to help you get you back to gaming. We see that you have done a bit of troubleshooting so far on your own; can you tell us if you have done the following?

Cleared the guardian history

Reboot the headset? If not, here is how.

To restart your headset:

  1. With your headset on and powered on, press and hold the power button on the right side of your headset until you see the Power off screen.
  2. Select Restart. Your headset will turn off and then turn back on.

If you're unable to restart your headset:

  1. Press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. This will manually turn off your headset.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the power button until your headset turns back on.

Uninstall and reinstall the Quest mobile or desktop app?

Please let us know if you have any questions.

For anyone finding this thread, I found a workaround. Had this issue after getting a new extra-padded facial interface that moved the headset further away from my face.

I added a piece of masking tape over the sensor between the lenses. This tricks the device into always detecting something close enough to the sensor for the screens to remain on.

The auto sleep feature won't work while you have the tape on so you need to ensure that you press the power button to manually put the device into sleep mode. An added benefit is you can lift up the headset to have a drink without media auto-pausing.

It would be nice to have the ability to disable this in software or adjust it's range (if that's possible with the sensor). It might already be there but I couldn't find the setting when I looked.

Hope this is helpful for someone else.
