Question

Lists of killer apps and games by user ratings - for the Rift hmds and Quest 1 - 3 with Link

UPDATED JULY 2025

Note that due to the malfunctioning Meta phone app, you cannot find all games using the phone app. Also the PCVR Store shown in the Meta PC App may no longer include all games, but using a normal PC, this link should work:

https://www.meta.com/experiences/pcvr/

If you cannot find a game in the Store, try searching for it in the Store or using an Internet browser. Searching on the internet, to avoid Quest standalone versions, just add the word "Rift".

To get an overview, here're lists of the highest rated games and apps for the Oculus Rift hmds and for Quest 1 & 2 with (Air)Link. If you're new to PC-VR, maybe these lists can be of inspiration - and maybe even old-timers can find stuff they've overlooked...

To be included at least 40 users must have rated a game or an app, and the average user rating must be at least 4.5 stars out of 5 (= 90 % or better) - based on user ratings in the Oculus Rift Store (Steam games or apps are not included). Maybe we could call these lists for grade "A" games and apps - or simply current Rift killer games and apps  😉

And why the need for 40 user ratings? In the Oculus Rift Store there are many games and apps receiving high ratings, but to provide sound statistics it's not enough with just 3 user ratings - or 10 - or even 20. I've chosen 40 because it's close to the minimum number of individuals I'd want in a group, if I was trying to get some robust statistics after collecting answers to a questionnaire (for a medical trial and similar investigations). I've provided the current number of user ratings for each game or app, so if some readers only trust average ratings based on 100, 500 or even 1,000 user ratings, the lists will accommodate for such preferences.

Note that these lists are not influenced by my preferences - I'm just the guy counting user ratings and associated average ratings  o:)
Also note that new awesome games or apps may not yet be on the lists due to an insufficient number of user ratings.

Tilt Brush (268 ratings)
Arden's Wake (44 ratings)

BTW, to make these lists I selected the Oculus Store category containing all games and apps, organized the items according to user ratings (highest ratings first) and then - one by one - checked the number of ratings and the average score.

Finally we could also check which game or app (with an average user rating of at least 90 %) has the most votes in total - and the winner in each category is:

Rift game with the most ratings

Rift app with the most ratings

Why do people feel the need to repeat themselves like 3 times in multiplayer games :D

I wish there was a PC -VR version with better graphics because it looks fun.

Looks like we got a new number one - with an average rating of a pure 100%  :o based on 54 ratings, namely:

https://youtu.be/3SVUjX_FImo

https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/2741208932631148/?ranking_trace=1943584525923090_2741208932631148_SKYLINEWEB_16lcu7urxVFmuMrio

Now, a 100% pure score with more than 50 ratings can be somewhat suspicious, especially when only 3 users took the time to write a review. I do hope there're not many fake ratings - or kind ratings made by friends and family members. It does not look like a game I'd normally buy, but I guess I now need to check this out. According to the accolades, the Oculus ratings do not stand alone. The Metascore is 76 - 80% - that's not bad:

https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/altdeus-beyond-chronos

https://vrgamecritic.com/game/altdeus-beyond-chronos

UploadVR and VRFocus both rated the game 80%.

The game is an Oculus exclusive for now - available only for Quests and Rifts. The Quest version is 1.81GB, and the Rift version is 2.09GB, so the Quest and Rift versions may be much the same. The price of $40 seems quite high for a game that seems not to have ultramersion textures and an awesome poly count. Then again, of course the story may be awesome.

Another Quest port has also gotten great Rift ratings, namely Walkabout Mini Golf:

https://youtu.be/KWEmsZyuE14

https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/2328506790595457/?ranking_trace=1943584525923090_2328506790595457_SKYLINEWEB_1hagpvNKTfT626JyU

The current rating is a massive 98% based on 46 ratings. Rift version is only 1.12GB, and the Quest version is 622MB, so the Rift version is twice the size, at least is seems the Rift version isn't just a 1:1 Quest port.

I just updated all titles in the two lists (see page 1).

Some games moved up, some down - and Airtone has been removed for purchase in the store. It's still available on Steam.

If some games are missing, it means they no longer have a minimum 90 % average rating. No new games were added.

Btw, going through all the top rated games, I did notice that some games had gotten a lot more ratings than other games since I last updated those numbers.

The big winner may be SuperHot VR, which close to doubled its number of ratings - going from about 2000 to 3600 ratings. Job Simulator also made a big jump to it's current 1500 ratings (from about 500 if I remember correctly).

Interestingly, although being offered for free, Asgard's Wrath didn't increase much (about 10% from 3000 to 3300). Stormland and Lone Echo didn't move much either, although Lone Echo did seem to move more than Stormland (Stormland seems to be standing still or close, which I personally think is a great shame. I consider Stormland for one of the greatest VR games ever made - unfortunately I think it looks so much better using Rift CV1 due to the non-blurry TAA, and I need ASW 2.0. Using Index I'll probably need a RTX 3090 or better before performance is just remotely acceptable).

My best guess is that when using Oculus Link, many Quest 2 owners have somewhat weak rigs - or maybe they are young - therefore choosing the more simple games which don't need much gpu power.

The Lone Echo 2 Trailer Experience got a lower average rating score, maybe it'll soon leave the list of greatest apps. I do wonder why. Using my Rift CV1 that app looks beyond awesome - and provides some of the best graphics on the Rift CV1 ever. But using high-res lcd hmd (=Index), now Lone Echo 2 looks extremely blurry due to it being soaked in temporal antialiasing, and the blacks don't exactly impress me. Will games and apps which shine on oled with SDE face great problems going to high-res lcd? Time will tell... Maybe devs are updating Lone Echo 2 to shine on lcd as I write this - which may mean a lot for the game's popularity...

I keep following the developments, but the last 6 months or so very few reviews have been added to Rift games in the Oculus Store. Seems very dead-ish. Even the best high-end VR games aren't moving, seems no one is supporting the Oculus Store anymore - even if it for many games is the only way to get optimal performance due to native Oculus drivers.

That said, 2 new games/apps have gotten 90+ % average ratings based on at least 40 ratings, namely:

1. Get Lost in Nature with Luke - 96 % rating based on 48 ratings:

Note that this is a free app, get it here:

The next app won some awards, and may really deserve its very high user rating, namely Audio Trip:

This game just got 40 ratings and an average rating of 92 % - congrats to the devs! Get it here:

Note that Audio Trip is a Quest port - while Get Lost in Nature with Luke is full PCVR.

Gravity Lab gets a large update in a few days:

More info here:

Currently the game has a 90% rating based on 65 ratings in the Rift Store. Now is also the time to consider locking the game and disable any auto-patching, if you don't want to change the game. The large update also arrives for the Quest version.

Just wanted to say that I still keep checking up on Rift games at least once a month, but these last 3 months there has been no new additions, sadly. New PCVR games don't seem to increase much in ratings these days, and may get very few ratings (or fail to reach a 90% average rating).

There are new Quest games every month. Eventually some of those Quest games get ported over to PCVR for Cross-Buy.

We have to remember that Dev Studios are trying to make money so they need to publish to the store that has the most users. Quest 2 sales are over 4-million (a figure we saw with the Foam Replacement Recall), and the number of Quest 2 users on SteamVR are double that of Index users... so we can reasonably conclude that VR Developers would want to target the Quest Stand-Alone store first in order to make the most return on investment.

Since VR presence and immersion doesn't require a high-end machine nor high-end graphics card, Dev studios can look to focus on PCVR as an afterthought once they are profiting from their stand-alone application.

As for ratings, the industry standard is that roughly 3% of users who purchase a product will rate it. Even if we double that, it would be a mere 6%.

We can't look to ratings as any indication of sales. Ratings only tell us how some users have chosen to rate a product. Nothing more.

Lastly, there have not been many Killer Apps for PCVR in a long time. For SteamVR, the last killer apps released were Fallout VR, Skyrim VR, and HL: Alyx. Everything else has been smaller single-dev "early access" type of experiences.

For the first time in a long time, no new games or apps were added to the Rift Store yesterday. In the good old times, the Rift Store was updated on a daily basis, but the last year or so it has only been updated Thursdays. Normally we'll get 1-2 new apps or games each week, but clearly Oculus isn't doing much for PCVR these days.

In short, new Rift killer games may no longer be found in the Rift Store - but elsewhere, and it seems Steam is indeed the new place to find awesome Rift content. While Oculus did not add a single Rift app to the store the last week, Steam added a whopping 26 Rift games and apps 😮

So PCVR is far from dead - thus do not despair if nothing happens in the Rift Store - seems the show continues on Steam.

If you want to see to top-rated Rift-compatible games on Steam, these can be found here:

https://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Reviews_DESC&vrsupport=102%2C401%2C201%2C202%2C402

You'll have to scroll quite a long way down on that list to find any game or app with less than 40 ratings, lol.

There was never a time where the Rift Store had something new on a daily basis. I've had my Rift since launch, and at best we may have had weekly releases, but that was not always the case.

More importantly, it was independent studios that were building and releasing all the new Software. Oculus itself has only released a handful of PCVR titles from 2016 to present day.

Trying to blame Oculus for other Devs not releasing more software is rather erroneous.

Steam has always had more PCVR games than Oculus. That has been a subject of debate here since 2016. And the debate always points out the same thing: Steam doesn't have any real standards for releasing PCVR games, so they get more submissions.

Just because Steam has more PCVR titles doesn't mean that those are "good" titles.

Quality vs Quantity

From your screenshot, there is really only 1 good title there, Legendary Tales. I see maybe one or two more that may be worth checking out if someone is bored. The rest are easily throw-away apps.

If we are going to force a conversation of comparing who has supported PCVR "the most" then Oculus has done much more for PCVR than any other developer, including Valve. Oculus has given us multiple full fledged PCVR titles, of AAA caliber. While Valve has only delivered on Alyx.

Flooding Steam with low-grade PCVR titles isn't doing anything "good" for PCVR. Quite the contrary.

I think it's great for new developers to have a "test ground" so they could start VR development and get a feedback. So it's good for the future of PCVR but not so good for current users may be.

Oculus has "hidden apps" in store for the same purpose.  Hmmm  is there any 3rd party tracker for all those apps hidden in Oculus store?  (you could open them with direct links only). I think there are much more published apps. 🙂

Btw - just to show "The Mystery of the Missing Myst" 😉

Myst arrived one month after Demagnete and was present on the list for some weeks, but now Myst is suddenly no longer on the list of "New Releases" (and several other games have similar fates):

Choosing "Browse all" and sorting by Release Date gives many more titles - but still Myst is gone:

I do get the feeling that Myst may not be the only game missing here, but I don't keep track of all games and apps. When I manually search for Myst, it's easy to find though:

- so devs have not removed the game from the Rift Store (I bought the Steam version, but only the Oculus version supports native Oculus drivers).

Not easy to sell the game for the devs if you have to actively search for the game... Might explain the very few ratings to some degree. This is one of the finest VR games ever made, especially for adventure games - should get much more exposure.

But none of that is actually true.

Facebook gave Myst its own segment at their last conference. That's a huge spotlight. Cyan actively publicizes all of their upcoming work and releases on Twitter. Including their PCVR version of Myst both on the Steam and Oculus Store.

Also, those of us who own Oculus products get an email regularly that lists all New Releases. Facebook also posts news about new releases on their official Oculus Facebook Page, on top of sending out Tweets and releasing YouTube videos. On top of all that, the Oculus PCVR Store will recommend things to you that are similar to Apps you already have, and it even recommends titles that people on your Friend's List enjoy.

Nobody has to actively search for anything just to find stuff, since both the developers and Facebook do a great job of advertising.

In truth, this is all consistent with how any other storefront works, including Steam. The Steam Store and the Oculus Store promote VR Apps in ways that are extremely similar.

There simply is no problem here. You seem to be going out of your way to invent problems that otherwise don't exist. This Myst fiasco is a prime example. Myst never vanished nor was ever missing. You simply did not search for it correctly, and instead of typing the word "Myst" in the Oculus PCVR search bar, you instead made a post saying that it was gone.

Rather than intentionally looking for reasons to paint Oculus PCVR in a "doom and gloom" light, perhaps it would be best to take advantage of all the ways that both Oculus and the Developers advertise new titles and hidden gems.

Asgard's Wrath is also now missing from the Oculus Originals tab - and pretty sure Luckey's Tale and Defector once were there too (and some other puzzle games I can't recall):

This type of list is usually controlled by Tags. That could be something controlled by the developers. Or perhaps Oculus cycles through recommendations on its list instead of just doing a data dump of everything in specific categories.

Then again, maybe it's a bug! 🐞

This is some good QA Testing you are doing for the Oculus PCVR App. You should consider raising a ticket with Oculus support with stuff like this.

I will say that your overall effort here may get lost because it seems more like you are trying to search for cases that attempt to prove "Facebook is killing PCVR" instead of what is really happening here, "Rune is debugging software." Food for thought! 🍔
