New VR Behavior Policy: Do not invade someone's personal space!

Facebook's VR use policy was updated recently, and now includes information about invading personal space, and other types of improper gestures.

https://support.oculus.com/1694069410806625/
Facebook’s newly updated ‘Conduct in VR Policy‘ highlights that you should not “harass or bully other users” by “invading personal space without consent,” nor should you “conduct yourself in an offensive or abusive way,” including making “sexual gestures.”

Repeated of flagrant abuses of the rules can result in suspensions or outright bans, which fully revoke your ability to use your headset. These rules apply in everything you do in the headset, whether you’re playing a social VR experience, a competitive multiplayer VR game, or even streaming a single player experience for others to watch on Facebook Live.

No doubt that this will only add fuel to the fires currently burning around the controversy between:
  • Banned from a Social Media Service
  • Banned from using a piece of Hardware you purchased

I agree that this is very problematic. I would personally be upset if Facebook banned my Account and tried to lock me out of my headset. But I also have a fairly strong sense of the types of behavior and should and should not be doing when interacting with others. And considering that I am far from a model student for "good behavior," I still can't help but wonder what types of things truly trigger a Facebook ban, outside of blatantly obvious rule violations. Until this ban/lockout happens to me, though, I feel like I don't have much of a dog in this fight.

What does interest me from all of this... is that "convergence" of VR and Real Life. At this stage, Oculus VR is being treated like a "real world." And violating rules, much like violating Laws, is having real consequences that can limit ones freedoms. When I set aside the moral dilemma around Consumer Rights, I can't help but thing... wow! How far we have come with technology.

With a ban from Oculus VR, not only are you prevented from using a product, but you are no longer allowed to "exist" in a Social Space that goes beyond a mere flat screen. That's kinda crazy, and gives a small glimpse of the future for humanity, virtual worlds, and Artificial Intelligence.

But for me i'm glad there's is a way to ban people for bad behaviour , society has laws for a reason .
I dont want to be bullied i dont want to be exposed to homopohobic slurs , racial slurs , tell me does any one deserve to be ?

I completely agree. I'm a child of the 90's and remember all the online Griefers and Player Killers that plagued not only games, but websites and forums.

We are entering a new version of the Digital Age where real life consequences are being mirrored in our digital lives as well. It is going to be messy. And things will get worse before they get better. But, personally, I'm very excited to be part of the ride!

I also have my proxy server handy should things work against me lol

Looks like SONY and their Playstation 5 will also be joining the behavior enforcement group.  I say good !  This revelation is also creating a stir in the gaming community.
    https://www.ibtimes.com/playstation-5-wont-actively-listen-or-monitor-voice-chats-sony-says-3063556

“Please be aware that voice chats in parties may be recorded and sent to us by other users. By participating in voice chats, you agree to your voice being recorded,” the note spotted by PS4 players stated. “These recordings will be used only for safety and moderation purposes by PlayStation Safety.”

Sony explained that the recording feature would be a PlayStation 5 exclusive function and would allow users to submit recordings to Sony solely for moderation purposes. The reasoning behind the new function was to monitor abusive behavior.

"Freedom" isn't the right to do whatever you want with no consequences, though. What happens if your freedom infringes on someone else's freedom? Whenever you're in a shared space with other people, in any context, there are always some rules of behaviour. They may vary depending on the venue, but rarely are you free to be a total asshat around other people without some risk of being held to account for your actions.

Too many people see freedom only from their own perspectives, usually on the internet but increasingly in real life.

I should have the freedom to do what I want to do, but the last time I decided to express that freedom I got arrested and am now on probation ???

The only way anyone can truly have their own freedom is to have their own environment.

In the real world, buy your own island and be the king of that region. On social media, start your own forum. Or better yet, create your own Internet.

The real problem is that everybody wants to be "free" under... someone else's roof! lol

So if you get snagged, you can't post on Facebook and you can't use multiplayer or social features of the Oculus platform. They already do that for those who haven't signed up or merged their FB accounts, so why is it not possible to do this as the ban instead?

So you propose to unlink fb and oc accounts instead of ban? :)

I think there should be more "warning" level things like in real life. So you could anonymously send a "warning" to someone who behaves bad and she will see this without any mods involved (like "you have 3 warnings from people around you, please be more polite".

What annoys most is that you have a "report" option, but you have not "I like playing with this person". That is not a "friend". You do not want to read his posts, you do not want to talk to him, but it is just great to play with him as a team or an opponent. You even could mute him ;)
So If you set "I like to play with him/her again (and select how much: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7)" next time you will be match making together (if only he will not set 0 to you). That is not public vote. It is just your own match making frequency selection (1 is rare, 7 is more frequent but not every time). You could change it later. That is not "how good a person is". He could be greatest person with best players skills, but you set "0" for him just to show that your do not want to loose every time you play with him.

ps. even if that person gets a ban I still set "7" that means I want to play with him regardless of any bans.

For me half the fun of VR is messing with people and trying to do middle fingers at each other.

    Why?
    Do they like it?

That isn't what I said at all - what I said was that you should only be banned from interaction with other people. It was pretty clear.
