Question

Oculus TrayTool - SuperSampling profiles, HMD disconnect fixes (hopefully)

Oculus Tray Tool
current version: 0.87.3

What is it?
In short; It’s a free application that helps you get the most out of your Rift. It is developed by me, ApollyonVR, with the support of the community for beta testing. Please note that this application is not an official piece software from Oculus, I am not affiliated with Oculus in any way. Any issues you
have with this application should be reported to me and not Oculus support. You can reach me here on the forums or by contacting me at *REDACTED*

Oculus Tray Tool (OTT) has many features that will hopefully help you get the very best VR experience. It has options that help you automatically switch audio and microphone to the Rift and back, handle the Oculus runtime service, voice commands, batch import Steam games (added to OTT by the awesome headkaze over at http://headsoft.com.au), replace icons for your games and more.

It’s primary feature however, is the ability to create “Profiles” for you VR Games and apps.
Within these Profiles, you set how Asyncronous SpaceWarp (ASW) should act, increase the perceived resolution by using Supersampling and increase the CPU Priority of a given app to get the most juice out of your system for that specific application.
Once a Profile has been created for a game or app, OTT will detect when it is started and apply the
profile for it, without the need for taking your headset of.

If you want to have a peek at all the things OTT can do for you before installing the application, check the User Guide pdf. The latest version of this application will always be right below this intro, but the app also checks for available updates on startup.

Enjoy, have fun and please report any issues, suggestion or feature requests to me using the above mentioned methods. Oh, and feel free to buy me a coffee by using the PayPal button in-app. 🙂

The very nice people over at Guru3d.com have been kind enough to host some mirrors for the setups, so make sure to pay them a visit!

UPDATE 03/08

Hi all!
It's been a while since i released a new version, but now the time has come! 😃
I'm looking for ppl who want to test the new version before public release.
There are primarily changes for the Quest but anyone is welcome to test it.
Just drop an email to *REDACTED* and i'll get you a download link
and some instructions. Also include what type of headset (Rift or Quest)
that you are using.

Also, i now have a proper domain for the website, so swing by www.ApollyonVR.com
and check out the new Forum! If you have questions, comments or suggestions

that is the place to post them. 😃

Below are the release notes for the new version. Please note that this is a Beta version

for testing the new features. If you just want to use a stable version of OTT then head

over to www.apollyonvr.com and simply download the latest version.

Version 0.87.7
* Oculus Dash will now use the same CPU Priority as what you set for OVR Server.
* Added a "Comments" option to Profiles.
* Implemented Paolod29's code for a permanent AirLink (https://github.com/pd29/oculus-airlink-enabler).
* Added more choices to the Quest Link settings for "Bitrate" and "Encode Resolution".
* Added option for "Force Mipmap generation on all layers" on the Game Settings tab.
* Added option for "Offset Mipmap bias on all layers" on the Game Settings tab.
* Added option for "Force Mipmap generation on all layers" to Profiles.
* Added option for "Offset Mipmap bias on all layers" to Profiles.
* Added option for "Encode Dynamic Bitrate" on the Quest Link tab.
* Added option for "Dynamic Bitrate Max" on the Quest Link tab.
* Added "FOV Multiplier" to Profiles. Setting this to a value lower than 1, for example 0.8,
will increase FPS due to less pixels being drawn at the expense of lower FOV.
* When creating a brand new Profile, the current settings from the Game Settings tab will be used.
This will make it even easier to create a new Profile! Simply experiment with different settings
on the Game Settings tab, and when you have found the perfect combo for a given game those
settings are copied over when you click "Create new Profile".

* Added option to Disable profiles.

* Redesigned the Profiles window a bit.
* Fixed some bugs.

Cheers!

@TomCgcmfc Yea, i messed up the versioning a bit, sorry.

And yea, the new gpu scaling option is by default on for all existing profiles and need to be manually adjusted. This feature is by default on in any Oculus installation, so it just made sense to keep it at default and let the user adjust it if needed. But you can edit multiple profiles at once now also, just select the checkbox to the left of the game name, then right-click ->  Edit all selected. Now you can change any parameter you want these profiles to have in common, like GPU scaling. Any option you leave blank will not be touched. Note: The "Edit all selected" dialog might sometimes end up behind the profile window (will fix that), but just move the profile window a bit and it should be behind it.

And regarding the profiles not applying, this might be simply be the voice confirmation dialog itself that does not work initially, check the Log window when you launch your game and see what happens there. You should see that the profile is indeed applied. The voice confirmation dialog requires that the Rift be set as the default device, and there is a bit of a timing issue here. If using the audio switcher, i can be hard to know (for me/the code) when audio has actually switched over, it might take a bit of time on some systems and my functions return true even though the audio in windows might not have fully switched, leading to the confirmation dialog not being heard initially. So i need to sort out the timing here, will try and do that for next release. But do check this so there is not another issue. You can also try manually setting the Rift as default audio, then launch OTT and then a game with a profile, and you should now hear the voice dialog on the first launch of a game.
Just for testing i mean.

Cheer!

OK. I tried selecting my Rift headphone as default, then started up OTT, then my Oculus app.  This seemed to work (got voice and profile settings) for some, but not all games.  For the ones that do not give a voice confirmation they do not take on the games profile (they stay with my Global settings).  If I exit the game and restart it I get voice confirmation and it applies the profile correctly.  So, I'm not really sure why this is happening or what I can do except start/exit/restart these.

I just got the Rift S.  And it's been 3 years since last using this with my old CV1. What would the optimal settings be for the Rift S.  Little confused on what settings I should set.  Thanks gang

Optimal OTT setting depend on your PC setup (yours from your Signature looks very good) and the particular game you may want to optimize.    Also depends on what options you want OTT to control (like audio switching, turning ovr services on/off, etc.).  Maybe just start off with OTT defaults and read the latest pdf manual that should be located wherever you installed OTT (probably under program files(86)/ oculus traytool.

Oh, and welcome back to the Oculus fold mate!

@TomCgcmfc Is it always the same profiles you have issues with, or is it a bit random? Have you tried swithing detection method on the profiles that you are having issues with? Like changing to Timer from WMI or vice versa? If that does not improve things, chould you do a restart in debug mode, then try to replicate the issue and PM me the ott.log?

Ok, switching the profile mode option from WMI  to Timer seems to have fixed this for the few Oculus Store apps that were giving me a problem like Google Earth VR, Lone Echo, and Nature Trek.  Not sure why since I never needed to do this before.  Maybe I should use the Timer mode for everything from now on?  In any case, this seems to have solved my problem.  Thanks mate and cheers.

@TomCgcmfc Timer uses a little more cpu that wmi, as it "polls" more often, so would recommend sticking wmi whenever possible. Not sure why wmi suddenly doesn't work for some profile, could be some optimization on the game side that
causes them to load just a bit faster, or perhaps a gpu driver update, in turn causing wmi to not detect them in time.
Glad you got it sorted. If you want, you can PM me a list of the games that do not work with wmi, and if i have any of them
i can do some testing and see what i can find out.

@Ernimus_PrimeLime Like @TomCgcmfc said, optimal settings very much depend on your system and also the game you run. So i'm afraid it's a bit of trial-and-error to find optimal settings for any given game. I would start by not creating any profiles, and just using the Global settings on the Game settings tab. Any game that does not have a profile should use these settings. Then you can test each game, finding the optimal settins for that game, and then create a profile with those settings. Remember that if the app/game as in-game options for super sampling and such, then combining OTT settings with in-game settings might lead to "unpredictable" results, such as OTT supersampling setting and in-game super sampling setting multiplying. Sometimes that might be what you want, if for example the in-game settings don't go as high as you want, but in most cases i would say that is not the desired result. So make sure you use either the OTT setting, or the in-game settings.

Cheers!

@ApollyonVR The Oculus Store titles that I currently seem to need to apply the Timer option include Google Earth VR, Lone Echo, Toybox and Nature Trek.  Seems like all my Steam games require this now as well, like Aircar, Assetto Corsa, the Lab.  Also, X-Plane 11 (direct download from the developer, Laminar) also requires Timer.

Again, I've never needed to do this before the previous OTT versions (before 86.5.0) and if I use wmi and then close and restart, the profiles sound off and are honored fine.  Anyway, for now I'll just use Timer for everything.  I have not noticed any differences in performance so far.  Thanks.

Is it normal to get the orange light when the Oculus service is stopped on the Rift S?

Yes, shows it is on standby mode.  Mine stays that way even when I shutdown my pc.  No need to unplug it imho.
