Question

Sony next-gen PlayStation5 VR 120Hz 4K oled hmd (=PSVR2) - can now be used for PCVR too!

EDIT: See the new specs here:

https://www.roadtovr.com/sony-playstation-vr-2-announcement-psvr-2-specs-field-of-view/

Original post:

Close to breaking news - if true - I just love oled so much more than LCD (well at least if oled gets similar ultra-low SDE like modern lcd panels):

"One important holdout remains: Sony Group Corp. plans to use Samsung Display Co. OLED panels in its next-generation PlayStation VR goggles, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Japanese console giant sold more than 5 million units of the original PS VR, launched in 2016, and is aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year, the people said, asking not to be named discussing internal plans."

Depending on the panel, lcd could still have more subpixels and higher res (like Vive Pro 2) - there're tons of things we don't know yet. And Sony hasn't confirmed anything.

Red arrow marks the arrival (first impact) of PSVR2 oled 🙂

RuneSR2  Another YouTuber I usually trust a little more.  Hopefully he will soon do some in-lens comparisons.

I don't know, but I suspect that cockpit clarity in msfs2020 won't be as good as with my Q3/QPro/rtx4090 because of the psvr2 fresnel lens and their lens diffuser (used to reduce SDE, like the old Odyssey+ used).  Maybe better FOV but this may not help if the outer edges are blurry with chromatic aboration.  Right now I'm not all that exicted about psvr2 PCVR.  Time will tell I guess.

Not sure I'd recommend PSVR2 in your case. Note how Benjo loves the compression free image quality and the oled blacks - but you already got that with the Vive Pro, and you got local dimming with the Quest Pro. Compared to the Vive Pro, you got it all except the higher res and bigger fov - and 120 Hz.

I tried the PSVR2 last night - haven't been using it for months. It's really blurry already at 10 feet render distance, but that's because the PS5 is way too weak to super-sample, your RTX 4090 will fix that. Unfortunately the mura is bad, there's simply no way around it. The mura looks like a thin slightly dirty plastic film covering the lenses - will millions of tiny fixed spots. Compared to the CV1, where you cannot see the SPUD in bright scenes, with the PSVR2 the mura is always present and easy to see in bright scenes if you focus on it. It stopped me from watching movies using the PSVR2.

Kinda strange, but the CV1 SPUD becomes very easy to see in total darkness, while the PSVR2 mura disappears in total darkness - so PSVR2 will provide those extremely deep blacks that the CV1 with SPUD never did.

Also do not believe it when some say the PSVR2 is very comfortable, it's the worst I ever tried and even caused my pain after about an hour, but my forehead is very straight. Only after some serious potentially warranty-breaking modding with the Globular Cluster CMP2, I can now enjoy wearing the PSVR2:

https://www.globular-cluster.com/CMP2.html

The controllers are also not made for big hands like mine, not sure if they got smaller hands in Japan, but controllers do feel like made for smaller hands than the Index controllers and CV1 Touch.

Index, like other lcd hmds, has a totally clean image with no visible mura - I greatly prefer that. I only prefer PSVR2 for the extremely dark games like Resident Evil 4 & 8, here the PSVR2 does shine like no other.

Personally if I one day get the adapter, it would be more out of curiosity - or for a back-up solution if the Index broke down, lol.

There are many pros and cons, these days are not easy! 🙂

Btw, forgot to post this earlier, but better late than never 🙂

MRTV does deserve some credit for measuring fov - and PSVR2 has a big fov - I always considered it similar to the Index, but great to see real numbers:

In short:

PSVR2: 116/102 (horizontal/vertical)

Quest 3: 104/96 (horizontal/vertical)

Pimax Crystal: 102/102 (horizontal/vertical)

- and the rest, still horizontal/vertical:

Source: https://youtu.be/fvkUtY8ifDs

As measured, Index with 130 degrees has a giant vertical fov - also means it really takes up my entire view from my nose to eyebrows. The PSVR2 still is great, but I can see vertical panel edges - but PSVR2 shines horizontally.

If we multiply vertical and horizontal degrees to get an idea of relative differences we see - relative to Pimax 8K X:

8K X = 100 %

Artisan = 91 %

Index MAX = 81%

Odyssey+ = 76%

Vive Pro = 71 %

PSVR2 = 68 %

Reverb G2 = 64 %

Quest = 61 %

Pimax Crystal = 60 %

Quest 3 = 58 %

Reverb G1 = 57 %

Rift-S = 54 %

Cosmos = 53 %

If we use the Index with lenses all dialed-in (= Index MAX) as reference, then Index has about 20% bigger fov than PSVR2 and 40% bigger than Quest 3. Of course Pimax 8K X dwarfs everything, but also has tons of issues.

Comparing PSVR2 and Quest 3, PSVR2 had 19% bigger fov.

Interestingly, Vive Pro has bigger total fov than PSVR2 - but that's due to much bigger vertical fov - often we tend to focus only on horizontal fov, and here very few hmds can beat the 116 degrees horizontal fov of the PSVR2. But I care much for vertical fov too 🙂

Sigh, forgot about this - which is very important to me, because I cannot easily unplug the PS5, and it's placed next to my VR rig:

"I have seen some people having some issues connecting the controllers. Just keep in mind to unplug your ps5 if it’s in the same room as your pc. Or else the sense controller will try to connect to your ps5 or turn it on when trying to use it with pc."

https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1enz4c4/just_beat_half_life_alyx_using_the_pc_adapter_on/

I guess that concludes everything for me - for now. Too much hassle.

Seems the Germans (both Sebastian from MRTV and Thomas from VoodooDE are from Germany) found a new way to enjoy the PSVR2:

Then again, MSFS 2020 is a nice focus - as it continues to be the most demanding VR experience I can think of.

Tyriel Wood has posted another vid showing PSVR2 through the lenses. Unfortunately he still does what I consider to be a major error - he just compares using SteamVR res 100%. He compares Index, G2 and PSVR2. Now for very casual persons not knowing how to super-sample, this may give some impressions - but to me it creates a gigantic bias.

Not only does the G2 have the biggest panel res - but its software res for SteamVR res 100% is also much higher than Index res 100%. Index res 100% in SteamVR is 2016x2240 per eye. For G2, SteamVR res 100% is 3164 x 3096 per eye. That's corresponding to increasing Index res to 216% !

So Tyriel Wood should compare G2 to Index res 216% - and then he should increase PSVR2 to match G2 res too - to make all hmds use the same software res.

To show you what I mean, and to show the effect of software res, this is Index res 100%:

- and this is Index 400% - do you see the difference?

Right now Tyriel mixes software res and hardware res - making it close to impossible to see the real differences. It may create more misleading results than trustworthy results. Here lcds also look way too dark:

I've just written to Tyriel - again - that he should use the same software res when testing panels - you do not have two variables in scientific studies if there's any way to avoid that. 2c.

It seems that many are happy for the PSVR2 ease-of-use (if you're lucky with the Bluetooth connection, but I don't read many posts about such issues anymore):

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/comments/1eq46nq/psvr2_pc_adapter_was_an_incredible_purchase/

For PS5 users, they gain access to more than 7,000 VR titles - and seems they can enjoy these as much as anyone else. Also seems very plug-an-play, Sony's setup looks very easy - not a lot of software and settings.

Tyriel did say that super-sampling did not work well with the PSVR2 due to the way the lenses are made (using a diffuser to reduce SDE but it creates a more blurry image and reduce effects of super-sampling - according to Tyriel). Using the PS5, when the image quality is most sharp, it is a lot sharper than the Index, so clearly the higher res can come through. Others are complaining that super-sampling does not work, which could be a software problem:

https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1enu6ry/psvr2_supersampling_doesnt_work/

Of course that could also explain why Tyriel could not see any difference 😉 Should be very easy to test if super-sampling works or not - just reduce SteamVR res to 20% and you will no longer be in doubt ðŸ¤“

Anonymous  def a oldie/goodie.  Plays best for me with my QPro (with local dimming) wireless using Air Link.  Sooo much better playing on a swivel chair, not worrying about wrapping a cable around yourself.  Once you experience good wireless PCVR, it's hard to go back to being tethered again, for me anyway.

The Verge had much trouble with their PSVR2 to PC adapter, and this article may be a good read:

Kinda does feel like Sony gave up on the PSVR2 and sold it to PCVR, lol. nDreams, behind the actually really great PSVR2 exclusive game named "Synapse", also seems to have given up - now making a bottom-end Quest game with so few polys you can nearly count them with the naked eye, no proper textures, no dynamic shadows and no proper lighting - and looks like a "Pistol Whip"-ripoff:

Looks like the PSVR2/PS5 will get a 1:1 Quest port, I've seen no description of PSVR2 specific enhancements.

I'm not holding my breath for this one. Maybe time to play some Synapse instead - with full eye tracking support and foveated rendering, Synapse uses all the PS5 and PSVR2 deliver:
