Question

Behold the stupid thing I did!

I spilled a coke in my PC ><

It's my own dumb fault too. I spill things all the time and I should know better than to sit a drink anywhere near my PC. But I did. I went to stand up, hit my knee on the keyboard tray and the coke spilled directly through my top fan vents. Immediately the PC black screened. I (understandably) freaked out and yanked every cord out of the power strip as fast as I could. I had the whole thing unplugged in about 4 seconds but it's not looking good.

My GPU was literally dripping coke out of it. My mobo was also covered. As were all of my drives. I took everything apart as fast as I could and washed most of it in a crazy amount of 91% iso(not the mechanical drives as if any liquid got inside they are rekt either way). Things are drying now, will be a while before I know.

My guess is the mobo, GPU, 3TB, 500GB are dead for sure. 1TB and SSD maybe. CPU, PSU and RAM likely okay(if mobo didn't fry them). But yeah won't know for a while.

So laugh at my foolishness and pray to the tech Gods for my rig. I know I was dumb and I can admit it lol. >_<

I'm using a crappy laptop at the moment just to go online.

That is why I always have lids for my drinks.

Balls!

I am terrified of doing this myself. My PC box sits beside my desk where I frequently have drinks sitting.

I have an Antec 1200 case which has a massive 120mm fan directly on top... any spill would be catastrophic - it would be sucked straight into my Coolermaster V8 fan which could probably suck a litre of beer into itself before even a drop would make it past!

Especially concerning when my 7-year-old son has taken command of my computer. His usage of the mouse and keyboard is not exactly... subtle lol.

You have inspired me to change the position of liquids on my desk once and for all!

Hope you get it sorted with minimal fuss/expense :)

Aw maaan! Nasty, bad luck (and bad clumsiness habit). :( Fingers crossed for a good recovery, @Blyss4226 :)

I've never suffered such a fate...and I don't plan to start. My avoidance tactic? I'm right-handed and ALWAYS lift a glass/can with my right hand. PC sits on the floor, on the LEFT side. Ain't no chance of any spillage going that far.

I once spilled ginger beer cordial only my Razer Black Widow Ultimate keyboard. Since then the left control key has been sticky inside, press it down and it takes 5 seconds to rise up again. You can't easily open up the cherry switches on the Black Widow either, Razer put a metal plate in to block access to individual switches. So I bought a Corsair K95 instead (better keyboard, but over 30 led back lights have died so far).

On another note, our IT guy at work puts all the office keyboards through the dishwasher and swears by it. True story.

Hahah! Yes, I have a K95 too with exactly 28 dead LED backlights. I was losing like 1 a day for a while there... thankfully none have died in a few months...

Ahh rubbish, that's awful!

Nothing worse when you look bad and know it was so avoidable.

There is a good chance it cause a short which shut the PC down and nothing is blown, as you know just make sure you get the coke off everything. I really hope this is the case and all is fine in the end.

In my case my PC is on my desk and I never put drinks on top so my Pc should never suffer such a fate.

Fingers crossed!

There is hope for your components but they can take an age to dry properly. I've had a few "accidents" with my water cooled rigs in the past. Try to strip the vid card and anything else that got wet down to the bare boards. Use an iso soaked cotton bud on every contact, then leave indoors propped in a sunny window ledge for as long as takes. In one case an Asus mobo was soaked in water when I was changing the water loop to CPU (while it was on) and removed the wrong connector. It fizzed, flickered the monitor screen and then died. Stripped it out, cleaned it, left to dry overnight, tested it and it did the same thing accompanied with an acrid electric burning smell. Assumed it was dead. Put it to one side, ordered a new one, then two weeks later was going to bin it but gave it one last test and it fired up. Used it in a back-up rig until it packed up two years later. CPU's and RAM tend to survive at least they have for me. One leak on a mobo did kill the nVidia even though it was not wet, assume short circuit.
To speed drying you could try the oven method. I have used this with a few mobile phone mainboards and XBox's. Very low heat for a few hours, components should never get too hot to touch, keep checking. Worked great for a fried HTC HD7 which was dead after water exposure, after reassembly, still working to this day.

Oh, man. That is too bad. I spilled a little bit of water on my $100 keyboard a few months back and totally trashed it. It wasn't even a lot of water. I just went to take a sip and it wasn't all the way on my lips, and a little fell (but that was enough). After that a few keys just stopped working (sadly some keys that were in my password, so I couldn't login to Windows). But it was only $100 to get a new one.

Also, maybe this is a good time to remind people about getting a good backup solution. I have this crazy overkill backup plan that secures a folder with all my files in like a half dozen ways. It's copied to a second internal hard-drive, and to an external drive with two different backup programs. Then I have 2 different cloud solutions that automatically backup the same data. Then, on top of that, for the most important code I have source control repositories. So basically 6 backups for the same data. I can't imagine that all failing at the same time unless it's the Rapture or something.
