Question

can we bring back the “dislike” button?

this is a question for real (not volunteer) mods (no offense), we need the dislike button back, too much noise and bullshit on the forum these days, we are grown ups and do not need to be shielded from having our feelings hurt nor are we so intellectually stunted that we cannot handle being given the option to “like” or “dislike” a post,

i feel that this is pretty insulting to ones intelligence and creates an “anything goes” atmosphere with no repercussions for beingn annoying or posting dumb shit

    Must be a REAL mod.

I'm just glad that there were REAL Posters around to make this thread worth reading.

No, the dislike button is not coming back because certain people were abusing it and I expect (if it came back) people would abuse it again. If you see a post you don't like, just close the thread and don't participate. Or see if you can state your counterpoint without being aggressive or attacking. If you find you "dislike" a lot of posts from a certain person, go ahead and use the ignore feature so you won't see that person's posts (you'll still see the threads created by them and the first post, but not their subsequent comments). Also, feel free to "LOL" people's posts, that's a neutral reaction (the poster doesn't gain any points) and can be seen as either laughing with them or laughing at them depending on the context.

i feel that in this day and age of millenials and enlightenment of allowing everyone not to be bullied and have a fair chances like everyone else, that we should not be denying those who prefer to express themselves using negative as opposed to positive feedback, this is internet facism and i will not stand for it

    Some much needed spelling corrections:
    Millennials
    Fascism

    As for this quote,
"this day and age of millenials and enlightenment"

Enlightenment? I think you meant, "entitlement." The difference is staggering.

Facebook has an "angry" emoticon, and Reddit has a "downvote" option. The internet has options, and these types of options are the opposite of what Fascism entails.

Personally, I think most forums should require an IQ test.

    @danknugz

Somone else has a pretty spot on take on it:

A like/+1 is a forced "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing" type of rating system. It’s not "you either like it or you don’t" but rather "you either like it or walk away". While this sounds bad, it isn’t for one reason:

It is easier to complain than compliment.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE DISLIKE/-1 BUTTON EXISTED?
I’ll be more than happy to tell you.

    1. People would get clobbered with negative feedback overnight.

Yes, overnight. You have to understand there are scores of people out there who would mash that dislike/-1 button without even thinking about it. Then there would be those who would dislike/-1 just out of spite and nothing more. It happens on YouTube all the time because they have a thumb-down button

    2. It promotes negativity.

I’m not endorsing a Thought Police way of internet interactivity by saying a dislike/-1 would promote negativity, because after all, if someone really wants to be negative, they can always write a comment expatiating their disdain. In other words, it’s not like you can’t complain, because you can.

What I am saying is that since it’s so easy to complain on the internet, a dislike/-1 would make it just that much easier, so in turn the dislike/-1 promotes being negative. If it existed, that’s the equivalent of holding up a sign that says, "Press this button to be an ass."

PEOPLE GIVE MORE THOUGHT TO LIKES THAN DISLIKES
Generally speaking, if someone gives a like/+1 to something, they had to think before they actually did it – even if only for a moment. The thought is a simple question of, "Do I actually like this?", decide on the answer, then punch the like/+1 button or walk away. This is altogether better than a mindless dislike/-1 which takes no thought at all to use.
