Question

Congrats SpaceX

Amazing launch yesterday

I want a VR360 or VR180 video of Starman (it certainly would be great promotional material for the Oculus Go).  Did they film with stereo cameras?

The for me one of the greatest moments in history was Apollo 8 when humans went beyond low earth orbit and went around the moon in 1968.

No human or animal has gone beyond low earth orbit since 1972.  I think a lot of the technology was built using analog computers using e.g. the slide rule (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_rule).

It was glorious. I had goosebumps. Seeing those two side rockets land in perfect unisons was awe inspiring. I know the 3rd central core didn't quite make it to the barge.Well, it fell over. But this was a test flight .. and a super successful one at that. The floating car in space was PURE elon Musk .. he is getting everyone excited about space!

Lol, well at least you're consistent with your message :)

Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel (along with the Kentucky Fried Movie) are perhaps the best movies after Monty Python movies.

Sorry to put a downer on this, I have got to ask - what was the point of dumping a car in space?  I know it's a big place but was there any need to put more rubbish there?

To me that´s also the downside of the story. Understand that it´s all about fundraising and making a name for the future of spacetravel, selling tesla cars etc.
Kapitalism is unfortunately what drives advances in technology when there is no war around to do it.

Well the first flight of a rocket has to have a dummy payload, usually it's a block of concrete but Mr Musk doesn't do lumps of concrete I guess. Having said that, it would have been better with concrete and giving me the car

Mel Brooks movies are third best. Speaking of Spaceballs and since a Tesla car was just launched into space as I understand it one performance upgrade you can buy for the Tesla Model S is literally called "Ludicrous Speed".

I was going to post a similar thread, you beat me to it zboson. Absolutely amazing... not least because the prediction is that the cost of each commercial launch of the heavy is predicted to be a tenth of the cost of NASA's planned heavy that's in development. There are some public services that perform better than private, but this aint one of them!

I think Carl Sagan would argue that a much better use of money would be not to build rockets to send humans into space in the first place.  So far it's had very little scientific value.  Maybe the Voyager program should get more attention than the Apollo program?  But Stephen Hawking thinks we need to colonize other celestial bodies soon.

I think we need an exit strategy if we are to survive as a species.
