Question

Do you guys kinda feel alone?

I mean this with regards to your passion about VR and the Rift.

I have been a gamer/geek my whole life and have many friends from many different backgrounds that are gamers or at least tech enthusiasts of some kind. The moment I became aware of the Rift I started to mention it to my friends and even new people I met thinking there would be some kind of universal response of "cool".

Weirdly not a single person has seemed remotely interested. To be honest I'm quite confused. Some of these guys even work in the gaming industry.

Well anyway this got me thinking about just how many people pledged enough for or ordered a Rift and realistically the number is a very tiny percentage of the population. Now clearly most people will be devs and it is only a prototype but I'm beginning to think VR is a lot less popular than I thought. In years to come will there be a small group of us fanboys running around in our own virtual world while the rest of the population sticks with Call of Duty 20 on their monitors? I highly doubt it but I do worry sometimes lol

Do you guys have any thoughts? Should I start looking for new friends? ;)

What about the haters who have only unjustified negativity to spew forth upon us? Which group do they fall into?
They're usually the ones, in my experience, who claim to be unbiased and just stating facts.

In my experience, such people CLAIM to state facts, but either they supply no facts, or their facts are bogus (links to some pseudo-science or questionable product marketing site). But pointing that out to them, or worse, supplying REAL reputable facts and references, just pushes their HATE button.

It's kinda hard to sell someone on VR without showing them VR. I've been talking it up with the guys at work, they think it sounds cool, but none of them are running out to pre-order a Rift (or even said they want the commercial version when it is released). It's because until they put one on they don't fully get it. I plan on having a Rift day at my job when I get mine in the mail, going to bring it in, hook it up too a projector and then let everyone take turns while everyone else gets to watch them play.

So now take that out of an IT department filled with gamers and computer geeks and go into the general public of gamers, how do you advertise this? Maybe before a 3D movie at a theater where they have stereoscopic glasses? or to the few people that by 3D movies for their 3D TV's (all 10 of them out there). At the end of the day, until the product is so cheep that people can get their hands on it without having to make that "do I buy a VR headset or an PS4" decision it's going to be a hard sell for the masses. I think Palmer is looking at the 20 years from now, when VR headsets with good quality are on the shelf for $20-$30 and people don't bat an eyelash at the cost.

After reading the topic I was afraid this topic would be about some VR pr0n application .. yet I clicked :)

I get your feeling. Specially the non-IT people don't get this. At my workplace though (hosting company with techies and developers, mostly gamers), everyone wants to see this thing in action and hope I will take it to our next companies LAN party. Let's hope they deliver in august 8-)

My best friends are so hooked for this since I am always talking about it like a cultist.
Only one of my friends isn't intrested. Must be because he isn't PC gamer, and loves nintendo waaaay too much.

Maybe he is salty because of Virtual Boy

People will pay as much as the experience they get. Give people a VR tech that feels almost as real as real life and you can price it as much as a small car. Give them a bad product as Virtual Boy and they won't even spend 50$ on it.

I want to believe that Oculus will not just be doing HMDs if they succeed, but will really push VR even further. Fortunately Palmer Luckey does not seem like the person that wants to cash up and really believes in VR.

I'm another standard case of nobody being excited about it but me. I would have ordered a DK way earlier if coworkers hadn't already dismissed the idea before talking about it. Then there's the people who knew me when I was a kid, saying "You were always into that kind of stuff, weren't you?" as their way of rejecting the idea. But this will work much better than my childhood desire to strap two micro-TVs to my head.

Have you seen the Razer Hydra mod with 'sliding' feedback?

That's cool but still ways off of what i imagine. It's more of a pressure than a touch sense. What i had in mind was being able to feel the textures of rocks, trees, water etc :D

Current haptics technology is still like a 4bit 10x10pixel grayscale camera unfortunately.

Lol why the hate on The Lawnmower man?
To tell you guys the truth, as a kid when I first watched that movie it was the coolest thing ever for me. I was like "Holy shit I want to try that!" "I knew VR was the bee's knees!" etc.

I still hold fond memories of it.
