Question

Does Microsoft really care about PC gamers?

I am a PC gamer at heart, and have been since about 1992 when I got to try my wealthy friend's Commodore 64. I have owned quite a few consoles as well, but if I could get the game on PC, I played it on PC. Over the years, Microsoft has published many of my favorite PC games (Motocross Madness 1&2, Monster Truck Madness 1&2, Midtown Madness 1&2, Microsoft Flight Sim series, Halo 1&2, Gears of War, Train Simulator, Fable, ect...). For all the awesome titles they put out, there has been a noticeable downward trend for quite some time. Looking at the Microsoft Games Wiki, 2004 was the start of this downward trend. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_published_by_Microsoft_Studios

Being that the Xbox came out a couple years prior to this downward trend, this tells me they viewed PC gaming as direct competition to their console market and decided to pull back on making PC games for the most part. The amount of titles directly reflects this decision.

With the recent revival of VR, Microsoft is thrusting themselves into the PC gaming picture again. But are their actions actually matching their statements? They keep repeating "we care about PC gaming", yet the only thing I have seen thus far is the ability to stream a Xbox One to my Windows 10 PC (totally pointless waste of resources) and a Xbox One controller with the consumer Rift . These are not the actions of a company that wants to push PC gaming, these are the actions of a company trying to push a console.

And lets take a look at the latest console. The Xbox One itself is a hodgepodge all-in-one multimedia unit that is good at doing many things but not that great at doing the most important thing it should be doing, and that is playing games. The PS4 beats the Xbox one in every important gaming area from specs to FPS (not to mention all the awesome exclusive titles). The PS4 will have an actual VR interface next year that will provide real VR experiences, and a Virtual cinema can't hold a candle to that. I still love my Xbox 360 dearly and play it daily, but it isn't trying to be an all-in-one media unit. It does exactly what it needs to do, and does it well.

Next year will finally be the year of consumer VR, and Microsoft is showing up late to yet another ballgame. They lost out on MP3 players (Zune fail), Smart Phones (Nokia fail), and are again behind the ball on the next big technological breakthrough (Virtual Cinema fail). People are looking for the next great gaming experience, and the Star Citizen crowd funding campaign is directly a result of that. They are nearing 100 million dollars of pledge money and the game isn't even done yet! You can't tell me there isn't a PC gaming market, we have put our money where our mouths are!

Instead of providing VR Cinema Xbox streaming that totally defeats the purpose of PC VR and teasing things like "Halo 5 might come out on PC someday", they need to step up and actually do something for the PC gaming community. If you build it, they will come!

@DaftnDirect Just as long as they make it as close to PC architecture there will be no need to worry about the PC version being nerfed to keep in line with the console.  The console will be the same game without the multitude of graphics options, it will be set to run smooth. The PC will still be free to crank the settings to match the hardware.  I think they could have been doing this since the first XBox to be honest.

@Zenbane Oblivion was glorious with all the official addons and if you turned up all the graphics settings and view distances it pushed the best PC's of the time to the limit.  A couple years later I was easily maxing the settings on a newer rig of course.  Skyrim is still one of my absolute favorites, I have played through that one a few times now and have all the official DLC.  I always followed the nVidia tweak guide on that game to make it extra gorgeous.  I noticed you said in another thread you like the Final Fantasy games.  FFVII is still one of my all time favorites.  I just played through it again on the PS4 to get ready for the remake :)

@Hanover It always baffled me that since the XBox's all used direct X, they wouldn't just run a version of windows as well.  Maybe XBox OS will be like another version of Windows specifically for gaming.  Win 10 Pro, Win 10 Home, Win 10 XBox, ect...  The Scorpio will probably need to run something very close to windows in order to support whatever HMD's they plan to support.

@cybereality I will have to check that one out.  I am doing lots of VR lately though and doing another playthrough of the GTA V story mode because they updated the hell out of it and it is looking better than ever.  I will be picking up the new Gears for sure and am still waiting for the Halo 5 PC official announcement (E3 would have been the perfect time for that sort of announcement, I would have not been on here griping either hahahaha).

Thanks for the input all, this thread has been a nice little change of pace.

Microsoft's grandest gift to gamers has been DirectX and Hardware compatibility with the windows OS giving gamers the ability to use a wide variety of hardware and software on windows....

Much of the success of PCgaming and Microsoft has been from that symbiosis

I believe they can bring the hardware and compatibility to a new generation via XBOX brand... because the new xboxs will be running almost identical as a PC we will see the division almost totally diminish between them.

I think they should stick to what they are successful with and that hasnt been stores or publishing ventures, but hardware and OS

@ThreeDeeVision, I agree, nice thread with interesting discussions... these kinds of threads tend to get quickly drowned out by many related and possibly (some might say) repetitive topics.. so I'm shamelessly bumping this to the top again

Deus Ex Invisible War is a great game if my memory serves me correctly, a bit dark and moody but let down by severe performance issues. They tried to do too much fancy stuff with the graphics engine on console and failed. I have no idea how the PC version handles.

You make a good point, Daft, but maybe we'll see more grown up console versions of these games to suit or we can hope there will be a wider variety of modes to suit casuals and those looking for more deeper challenges.  If you look at Halo Wars 2 though, they had good success with their anyone can play formula of the original and I guess they will follow the same mentality with the sequel. Whether this will be to the detriment of "core" PC gamers is yet to be seen but yes I can certainly understand your concerns. In a ways it's already happened. I compare my beloved Rainbow Six Raven Shield and all the pre-mission tactical planning and then look at Rainbow Six Siege - two very different games.

I think the main takeaway here is there will always be pro PC developers making the right sort of games to suit the audience with all the bells and whistles and there will be those dipping their hands in to cross format games. I think Xbox play anywhere console games in terms of options will become more like PC games to suit the variance in quality between Xbox One, scorpio and top end PC, So at least visually there won't be any impact. Microsoft will naturally tailor their first party games to be compatible for all but you are absolutely right they will need to cater to the lowest common denominator in terms of gameplay. So ultimately it will fall on ambition of game design.

Quantum Break is actually pretty good.

Im probably going to buy that for the PC this weekend.  Does anyone know when XBox Play start?  If I bought this today, would I be able to play it on my XBONE as well? (which, to be honest, really doesn't matter since my PC and my XBOX One are connected to the same TV)

I think Invisible war probably was a great console game... and a good PC game if I'm honest... I just remember it having small maps compares to Deus Ex, especially at the beginning so had loads of loading pauses where you wouldn't expect them. I seem to remember a few simplifications like all the weapons used the same stock of ammo, rather than having dedicated ammo for each weapon... even the rocket launcher!!! I may have to play it again for a more accurate and balanced memory of it though.

I hope you're right about pro-PC developers keeping us happy but I still think the cross platform support will put additional pressure on them... and if they succumb then the design factors I described will have to be take into account... xbox games have to vie for the limited disk space on the console... I believe around 360Gb (after allowing for the OS) so I have a feeling this will be a big factor in games design.

I love some console ports.. I really enjoyed the original Halo at the time, and sometimes I only want to play stuff that's quick to get into and fun... I just worry we'll see less of the other type of game.. the type where you need to set aside a good few hours to wonder around discovering things in huge and complex worlds with intricate character development... I'm loving Fallout 4 by the way but it also seems to have a smaller world than 3, and some simplifications in the mechanics of the game... character interactions seem to me to be a little more simplistic for instance... settlements and crafting make up for it though.

Here's hoping the PC developers stay strong!

Previously they gave out a code for owning both, but the two games did not share the same progress. Play anywhere is a different beast entirely and I'm not sure it's live yet for Quantum Break. Looking at the announced games I would say not at this time.

@Shadowmask72 Do you happen to know if they got the FPS bug sorted on Killer Instinct?  My 120 Hz monitor made the game twice as fast as it should be, which was pretty fun but was a bit much hahahah.

Can't wait for the new Gears!  Forza without VR support won't get my money, I have had too much fun actually sitting in cars to go back to flat screen racing.  Halo Wars games are decent on a mobile platform but are lacking for the PC, Halo 5 for PC would make me a happy camper though.  2017 is looking pretty awesome otherwise.

Sorry, no idea ThreedeeVision as I use a lowly 60hz 4K monitor so I couldn't test. You can change the refresh rate in your GPU control panel apparently which partially improves the situation.
