Question

Dreaming about being in VR

I never had dreams about being in VR until I got the Gear VR. Once I got the CV1, dreaming I'm in VR became more frequent. One time I actually fell asleep with my headset on and had a dream I was in VR. Imagine how I felt when I actually woke up and still had the headset on. I'm sure reading Ready Player One and watching Sword Art Online contributed to my dreams.

Anyone else having dreams about being in VR?

@kcampbell, yes, I personally think it's a must have game.  It needs to update the controls though because it falls into the intense category of motion sickness so it can both terrify you and make you sick. The motion sickness is not that bad more me with it anymore.  I showed it to a friend and after five minutes he was sick for well over two hours.  Another friend did not get sick even on his first time using VR so there is a lot of variation but Dreadhalls is one of the worst.  Technolust has the best solution to the motion sickness for any of the first person games I have seen.  That's another must have in my opinion but but Dreadhalls from a VR point of view is better.

No other game I have played yet has demonstated the psychological power of VR on the mind as Dreadhalls.  John Carmack said someday VR is going to give somebody a heart attack (after he played Dreadhalls) and I am sure he's right.

@pjenness what garden are you referring to?

@zboson never played Dreadhalls but I'm assuming it's worth getting?

The garden is part of a social app Im making.
Will be looking for some testers at some stage.

Dreadhalls is great. Spooky as and will help develop some VR stamina. Can be a bit rough on the guts the first few times tho1

@zboson great, I'll probably pick that up to play this weekend. I've been behind on my gaming but plan to spend a good amount of time playing this weekend. I agree with John Carmack. I thought the same thing when P.T. came out that if it was available in VR someone my have a heart attack. I'm a huge horror fan but I still get nervous about trying scary things in VR.

@pjenness Nice, good luck with the app, can't wait to see it.

I became interested in VR because of dreams. I am lucid in most of my dreams and have been working on controlling the environment since I was a kid.

I am pretty good now at it and have almost god like powers such as:-

1. Flying

2. Super human strength

3. Telekinesis

4. Controlling the weather, pausing the rain or waves etc

5. Walking through solid objects

6. Repairing objects after damage (or people) usually have to touch the object to do this

The problems with dreams are their stability, reproducibility and trying to remember them in the morning but they do have full FOV, high res  colour and haptic feedback.

I am consistently battling with my subconscious as it tries to redirect the dream to whatever system diagnostics it is trying to run. Probably the most interesting thing for me when I am lucid is the split of conscious mind and how it acts independently of me in totally unpredictable ways. I can also talk to it via in dream characters, amazing really.

When I first got my DK1 I knew we were on the right path to making my dreams literally a reality.

@Luciferous I'm good at controlling my dreams too but never tried your last 3 abilities. Once I'm aware I'm in a dream I can easily fly (which is my favorite thing to do), control people, and manipulate my abilities similar to DBZ characters when I or someone else in my dream is in danger. I wish there was a way to record dreams and watch them later. A dream simulator in VR would be interesting if done right.

@ kcampbell

Yeah flying is incredible and my fav also.

I am not sure a dream app would work in VR. Sure you could have all the powers etc but the one big thing missing is the ability to manipulate the users memory to make the dreamer accept that the dream is real.

The subconscious has a great trick it pulls out of the hat there. It has the ability to block memories and insert new ones that make you accept the situation you are currently being presented, no matter how Improbable.

Example of memory manipulations : It presents a stranger as a brother you never had and insert some small memories to back it up. Another example it may be running a dream that has you working in a job you had 10 years ago and supresses any recent memories of work.

Really is clever stuff. Whilst you are dreaming the mind is in a very suggestible state. It has its down side though.

Example: My Dad died in 2006. Now my subconscious presents him to me regularly in my dreams. Now as I am lucid this has the opposite effect on me as if I was not. If I believed he was real, I would hug him feel better and forget about it in the morning but still feel the benefit of it subconsciously. As I know he is not real it makes me feel bad when he turns up.

If you do not accept it then the whole therapeutic purpose of it is lost.

Although in a way maybe we already do this to a certain extent when playing games, the suspension of who we really are. Like reading a book, when you are in the zone there is no room for other thoughts.

If you could record dreams though you may not see a very stable image you thought you remembered in the dream. The mind only concentrates on the small area you are in and only expends processing power on what you are currently focusing on.  Probably why it is so disjointed.
