Durovis Dive: Android VR HMD

Hi guys,

just came across this: http://www.durovis.com/index.html

Looks like a HMD built around an Android phone. Interesting concept, what do you think? Much less sophisticated than the Oculus Rift, yet potentially more portable and accessible for casual gamers.

There is an version available now called "Open Dive" where you print out the 3D model by yourself (or use a service that does it for you) and just buy the lenses and the headband for 7€ at Amazon.

Just ordered one to have something to do while waiting for my Rift... 8-)

And there's a new video that shows the (low) latency:

Seems a lot like the FOV2GO, which I believe was created first. He has made quite a few modifications that allow adjust-ability, focus, etc. Though. It would be great for one of these to go mainstream as a cheap rift alternative. The Hasbro My3d was a close effort, but it never really took off.

The FOV2GO wasn't head mounted, was it?
This is the thing that makes it immersive. I built an OpenDive and the immersion is good, the FoV is around 90°.

Ok, so put a rubber band on the FOV2GO and it is essentially the same thing. Don't get me wrong its a very cool device, and I would love to see this type of thing succeed as a cheap alternative for the rift. Hell, I would download it right now if had a 3d printer. But I do believe credit for the concept should go to the original developers of the Socket HMD mobile, especially if they plan to make money off it.

    FYI,
Stefan Welker (the guy behind the OpenDive) is giving away some fully assembled OpenDive HMDs (just add an Android phone with a 4.3"-5.5" screen) to Android developers that have published at least two games on the Google Play store, details are at http://www.durovis.com/index.html#FreeOpenDive

    Looks alot like this:

Might be nice for developing for the upcoming Android support for Rift. Get the game all set up, then add Rift support later.

I just ordered on. Considering they're both in unity it should be a simple drop in replacement for the player object. Honestly I don't see any reason why rift developers can support both, provided their app will run on a lower powered device.
