Question

I want to design virtual raves for VR :)

Hey forum,

I am extremely interested in capturing and recreating the essence of large scale light shows in VR using computer graphics on a much smaller scale. Initial focus would be to gradually increase the complexity of the light show itself more so then the scale.

can any game engine handle this many lights, and this many virtual screens, all working together with the audio of the performance in real time? doesn't have to be "live" it can be entirely pre-fabricated and just presented live....

who is with me on this?

    these are the mixes i would start with:
    -https://soundcloud.com/bassnectar/bassnectar-immersive-music-1
    -https://soundcloud.com/bassnectar/bassnectar-immersive-music-2

    my thoughts;
    -one light show/stage for each mix
    -both are free to download
    -both are about 30 minutes long
    -from the same artist as the video i posted
    -not live but i think it would be better to work with a prefab high quality audio mix then streaming audio feed for this anyways

    Should be entirely doable, the videos wouldn't need to be rendered in real time, so I don't see that as an obstacle, and lasers by themselves without any other complex geometry shouldn't be that big of a system hog. The biggest hurdle would be writing the network code to get all of the people together in one spot, I wonder if Riftmax could be modified for this sort of thing, since it already has lobbies and online functionality.

    right on right on :)

    i just want to capture the essence of a light show using animating laser patterns at first to straight up recreate the video i just posted and re purpose it for a different mix. then slowly experiment with increasing the light show complexity as the project evolves

    i would also like to experiment with holographic imagery and an animating texture based lights

    for instance take the first mix...

    into theme; floating through space into a supernova:
    -you enter a room that is dark has no furniture chairs seats or anything inside of it except for 4 walls a ceiling and a floor
    -slowly but surely the rooms walls floors and ceilings will fill up with faint animating stars and galaxies that fly around the room
    -shortly before the performance begins the room will be filled with hundreds of stars floating about
    -when the music begins all the stars and galaxies will begin to coalesce into a single bright star that emerges in the center of the room
    -when the first drop occurs the star goes supernova
    -which will reveal a circular stage similar to the video i posted in the OP
    -on this stage will be a series of artistically shaped virtual screens on it
    -the virtual screens should be capable of displaying video slide shows and visualizer like content on them
    -meanwhile the star dust will be flying around in the air in many different colors driven entirely by particle effects
    -but eventually these particles will transform into animating light fixtures that cast laser beams in very complex patterns and animations
    -from here it will be similar to the light show i posted in the OP

    see what i mean about complexity? and this is just something i designed for an intro off the top of my head....

    this does not mean i dont want to have compelling club settings though. it just means i want to prioritize complexity of the light show itself over the complexity of the clubs layout.

    the lobby/lounge area could look like this

    but when you walk into the light show area you are walking into a holodeck

    in fact from this point on im going to refer to this as a "holodeck light show"

    reasons;
    -the light show itself takes precedence over the entire space
    -any static objects such as furniture bars seats and what not with associated collision detection would just get in the way...
    -everything projected into the holodeck is a hologram without any collision detection and should be free to flow in and out of existence and flow with the music and thus be a component that adds value to the performance
    -if you want to sit down or need a break just leave the holodeck and chill out in the lounge...

    its a hologram :P

    actually i think a holodeck abstraction layer would be perfect for this idea...

    walkthrough;
    -download/install RiftMax theater or RiftMax Club? or some other platform?
    -launch the application
    -when you enter the main menu choose to start a lobby or join a lobby
    -enter the lobby:

    once inside the lobby;
    -find your way to a holodeck room that is not in use
    -holodecks not in use will be represented by closed doors
    -there could be a kiosk near the holodeck door that will allow you to choose from a whole plethora of holograms
    -when the hologram is finished loading, the door will open and be replaced by an infographic poster
    -the infographic posters will be similar to janus doors but much more richer graphically
    -you have to walk through the door to load the hologram room
    *holograms load on an individual basis...

    how to enter a hologram room that is already in use?;
    -once in the lobby find a holodeck that is open and has an infographic poster door similar to janus
    -enter the room
    -be immersed in the hologram show mid stream or near the end

    thoughts;
    -once you start a hologram it has to run its course it can not be turned off
    -even if the hologram starter leaves the lobby entirely

    the club lobby will come with a few hologram freebies by default. most likely the ones i will be endeavoring to create to prove the validity and value of this medium/experience. so they will probably be bassnectar inspired

    or i might get around to entertaining the idea of visualizing this mix:

    if i could find a better quality audio source that is.... has a lot of self promotion but hey who cares its heavy stuff :P

    bottom line it has to be a continuous mix about 30 minutes long and it has to be a lot more interesting then just cross fading through tracks on an album. you really have to go at this with a mix tape mind set. preferably one that you could essentially just play at a party and pretend to be actually mixing it in realtime :P they dont have to be done live but a mixtape mindset would provide great material to work with when visualizing epic holodeck light shows.

    I think the best bet here is to try and hook in to the existing visualisation apps out there for lighting, that way you can actually use lighting programs from Martin, HOG etc etc to actually drive the light shows. these apps have all the lighting fixtures, functions gobos colour filters and photometric data built in. I have been trying to drum up interest in the martin community to push in to this as it would add a whole new angle to show design

    can you link me to those products? i would really be interested in studying their function :) would it be possible to hack these tools into something like RiftMax Theater? or are they built for opengl? or some other specific game engine?

    honestly RiftMax theater would probably be my best bet as far as what platform to commit to in the short term. ive discussed this with Mikearms. he is interested in the idea. but i want to put in work and learn. i dont want to throw all the work on him and be like "hey build this for me" i want to build the holodeck light shows myself :)

    i really do want to capture the true essence of a light show. the idea of experimenting with holographic imagery was an afterthought to increase light show complexity...

    and if you haven't checked out bassnectars immersive mixtape on soundcloud yet (free download btw)

    here they are on youtube....

    immersive mixtape 1:

    immersive mixtape 2

    these are the two mixes i am committed to starting this project off with....

    Sorry if this has been said, but you did try Buddha Clubotron, right? I though that was pretty cool.
