Question

LCD that could help find keyboard, mouse, or controller

At a push of a button, Samsung can make their LCD transparent. This was shown at I believe CES over a year ago. Now only if the size and latency was perfect. Imagine finding your keyboard or mouse without having to lift up the Oculus to avoid knocking over your drink. Almost happened to me blindly searching for my keyboard :(

Notebooks with transparent screens (not sure if you can turn off the transparency during a game):

Another feature that would be nice would be touch. If a touch sensor was added to the front of the Oculus, you could zoom into objects, select items, pause/play a movie, etc. just by touching the front of the Oculus (where most people paste eyes on). This would help by not needing a mouse or keyboard for some specific applications like movie players or art programs.

There is no such thing as an HD lens. A lens already distorts the light in the nanometer scale (This means that the current lenses would be fine even for a 32K screen if we used the same FOV). Top quality lenses are needed only for microscopes/telescopes/surgical use. The blurry image when looking at your surroundings (after 5-10cm) comes from the distortion of the fisheye lens itself. It is physics and can only be bypassed with pre-distortion at the back of the rift, which would be too expensive and complex to bother. Far more expensive than adding dual HD cameras.

I'm going to build the Rift into a helmet for combat flight sims so the idea of a push button transparency is a good idea, though i feel the cost implementation will put it out of most consumers bracket (as previously posted) for what i want to do......The lucky thing is that most of the functions on combat sims can be set up on the control surfaces i have my hands on anyway (Throttle and Yoke) so its a matter of remembering what button on where does what!!! But having the transparency for normal flight simmers would be a great advantage though it takes away some of the reality.....ie not having the full cockpit to immerse yourself in.

mstdesigns is correct. If you used a transparent case cover with a transparent screen, you would not be able to see a thing due to the lenses.

I think the simplest solution to this is to allow the screen and eye cups to hinge upwards off the rest of the unit like flip up sunglasses. That way you can flip it out of the way if you need to reorient yourself or switch to the desktop.

But I imagine that having it attached by a hinge might cause the screen to jitter more during normal use.

I just feel like it might make it less real-feeling.

A cheaper solution would be to have some sort of kinect like sensor and a pair of gloves.
I honestly think that is the best way to track your surroundings.
The reason you need the gloves is to have a more precise tracking of the joints and small movements of the fingers.

being able to see outside of the virtual reality will just break the immersion, I think its best if you learned to type without looking, maybe try a DasKeyboard: http://www.daskeyboard.com/product/model-s-ultimate/? ;)
