Their CEO was quick to run in when the image was leaked and Tweet that the leaked image was not 'the' system, but a "room monitoring" device they use!!!

As with everything else to do with AR / VR at the moment - it's bloody exciting and can't come soon enough.  It's those expectations that we have to control.  Or maybe they should.

Agree. Managing expectations is the failure of all of the AR/VR execs at the moment. Some have paid more heavily than others for allowing the hype-train to get the better of them. Managing of these expectations can be not just clearer statements, and less PR glitz, but also reining in the fan-boys and steering the social media.

Less Snake Oil and more Social Inclusion!

Room monitoring?

>"Images of Magic Leap’s anticipated portable augmented reality device were leaked to Business Insider last week. According to Business Insider, Magic Leap, a $45 billion Google-backed startup, was hastily finishing building the prototype, known as PEQ0, in preparation for a board meeting this week."

CEO Rony Abovitz was once again forced to defend his company following news that all may not be what it seems at the firm. “Hi everyone - the photo you are all excited about is NOT what you think it is,” he wrote on Twitter. The photo shows an @magicleap R&D test rig where we collect room/space data for our machine vision/machine learning work. We do this in order to understand lighting, texture, various surfaces”

I leave it to you to decide if you believe him ;)

I suppose that this discussion may not be as "off-topic" as it was when started - with the news that Oculus VR has just started hiring and forming an Augmented Reality team internally.

For all my complaints regarding the business style of ML - I have to admit that the comments in the presentation about the 'four pillars' and the importance of engaging content are the key factors... that and not looking like a nerd while wearing the hardware!
