Make operating system for other vr headset makers to use

I might be wrong, but it feels like all the vr headset makers have to make their own Operating System for the vr headset to use.

Would be nice if there was a operating system every vr headset maker could use, like how people making computers dont have to make a new operating system every time, they just use Windows 11, used by millions around the world, and is like, the standard.

    Rather naive question tbh.

Not everyone uses Windows 11, lol. What about older computers? What about Macs? What about Linux or UNIX etc?

Not all headsets have the same features, hardware, memory or storage capacity.

The idea of a unified operating system is not realistic.

Meta is using Android and just put their own skin on it, same as what different phone brands do. I assume the Frame is using Linux and maybe others too. You make a good point, it would make like easier for game developers who wouldn't have to put so much effort into adapting games for different operating systems. Of course the Valve products were more about PCVR, and Meta's main goal is standalone, so they started life in a different environment. So, while we may think it's a good idea, the reality is it's never going to happen as @steve40 says there are already other established options.

We really only have 3 standalone mobile VR operating systems:

    • Vision OS (Apple Vision Pro)
    • Steam OS (Steam Frame, Steam Deck, Steam Machine)
    • Android (every other stand alone headset. Meta, Pimax, HTC, Samsung, Pico, etc)

Apple will never share their OS with others or use someone else’s OS.

Steam OS is Linux and is open source and available for anyone. It works on PCs now too.

Android is the standard. Everybody puts a different wrapper on it (Meta’s Horizon OS is just a GUI on top of Android), but the actual core OS is the same.

Meta was working on their own VR OS made from scratch, but they abandoned that and stuck with Android.

With the way Google is locking down Android and making it worse for developers, I don’t consider Android a good option. Steam OS is rough around the edges and needs a fair bit of work, but it’s a lot more flexible and open.

Technically there’s also Android XR, but it’s still Android with the VR company needing to implement less on top for VR.

Having a common front end would make things easier, but nobody can agree on what it should be. Meta’s front end isn’t that good, too much focus has been on social/metaverse and the store. Valve’s front end for the Steam Frame includes things like text console windows, desktop Linux in a menu item, etc, not very friendly if you aren’t a power user.

I’m not even sure the OP is talking about standalone systems; they could be talking about the PCVR front end/home/console/dashboard/store/ecosystem. Or both.
