Question

Mouse And Keyboard support For PS4 Equal Death Of PC?

I just saw this and it got me thinking that the PC could be in trouble if this happens natively and does not require an Eagle Eye or Frag FX to achieve mouse and keyboard support on the PS4. When you think about it the PS4 is a computer and making it work would be the easiest thing ever. With the PS4 being powerful as a mid priced gaming computer, along with this development, we may see a mass exodus to consoles! :o  :o  :o

I wouldn't worry too much if my nephews are anything to go by. They absolutely love playing on consoles with a controller but hate playing the same games on a PC. The majority of console only players hate using a mouse and keyboard because it's "too much effort". I felt the same way before I had my kickass rig built.

You know you can use console controllers on the PC, right?

IT MARKS THE END OF CONSOLES!!!

Though I was just talking to a coworker about this the other day. The argument that a PC has better graphics is kinda irrelevant. A PC with good graphics now will not be able to display the same caliber graphics 5 years from now, at which point you need to drop another $200-$300 on a video card, maybe upgrade CPU if you skimped. But a console improves with age as developers settle into the quirks and processes of the processors.

No, the graphics are not going to be the same as a modern computer, it will still lag behind, but from your perspective as a console gamer, the graphics got better, not worse. Besides, you're sitting further away from your TV than your computer, so the console doesn't need to churn out 12K video across 7 displays to look acceptable.

Is/will a console ever better by numbers? No. But from a console gamer's experience, it is.

    - Nowhere near the majority will play kb / mouse on a console, in the living room, on the sofa.

    - Consoles are closed platforms, with strictly controlled environment. PC are open platforms. Not just games, but software, apps, ... Freedom, modding, is a big part of the PC appeal. e.g. The Oculus could have never launched from a console platform.

    - The PCs has been dying for 20 years. Allegedly.

    - Consoles are nowhere near the power of PCs. They maybe now for a low power config, but will be left behind within six months to a year, if not already.

    - PCs are more than just gaming machines. I do everything on mine, and I certainly don't want a console to do all that stuff, nor do I want Sony and Microsoft intruding every step of the way.

It's a different market, although gaming is convergent, the platforms are still very much separate.

You've been able to use mouse/keyboard for consoles since at least the original xbox/ps2 generation. There were various adapters available that did a pretty decent job mapping them to a virtual controller. They were pretty uncommon, and not because they didn't work, but because a mouse and keyboard are ill-suited to the environment you normally find a console in.

As for the relative performance of the PS4/XB1... what we know about Jaguar's performance in existing products would seem to indicate the XB1/PS4 ought to perform roughly like a very low-end desktop CPU (like one of the faster dual-core i3 chips perhaps) and a low-mid desktop GPU (low TDP here).
