Question

Musician's Thread

I am wondering if there are any other musicians on these forums - if so what do you play? Do you write / record music? What got you into playing music? What is your gear?

I play bass guitar, guitar, synth and function as the audio engineer for my band.

It was Nirvana and Much Music (Canadian MTV) that got me into music - though I moved on from that influence early on after starting to learn how to play. I started on bass guitar at 13 and playing guitar at around 22 (I am 31 now) - when we play live I function as the bass player and in the studio I remain multi-instrumental focusing on support parts.

My main gear is:

'97 Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe
Ampeg Micro-VR with DI
Ampeg V6B
Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 running through Logic X

For my Peavey - it is single coils, but they are overwound and have a huge bite even before compression / distortion is applied.

To be honest I don't think I have written down any music since school - as I said, I hated writing tab in guitarpro3 and once I was out of school I just relied on my memory to keep me going and a tape player from time to time. I definitely have forgotten riffs and songs over the years though which I guess is a shame, lol - but I have enough of them that stick that I always feel like the ones I forget weren't good enough to be remembered.

You know, what I do when I really want to remember a motif I want to use, I tend to just whistle it into my phone and extrapolate from the single notes later.

Has worked well so far. Could work well for you if you can whistle in tune, and transcribe properly

That's awesome - I have never been able to whistle, but I do use my phone all the time for recording guitar parts or vocal ideas. I am pretty good at re-figuring out anything I've done before just by playing along to it.

Just hum it :p

"Extrapolate"..... my, it's early in the morning for that kind of language! :)

It think it should be the humbucker that's driving most of your gain. It should have at least 1.5x the output of a single coil (even if it's severly underwound).

Yeah, if I got an idea I hum it also (if no guitar is near me...what handles the water of a shower better? Guitar or Nokia Smartphone? x) )...the problem is, I have so many ideas in my phone...half of them sounded amazing in my head (maybe due to intoxication while recording) but the sound of me humming really keeps me from listening to most of them back xD

Yeah, of course I would expect more punch from a humbucker - but the Ibanez (two HB) was not doing that well, either. Point being, the ones Peavey use are better, in that respect - a lot better.

I love my Peavey Raptor - I have used it as a daily driver for the last three years, most overdubs I do for guitar are with it.

I have a few ideas that I hum out - but I find that if I sing the idea using gibberish I am able to get a more workable melody out that I can later apply words too easier.

I got over the embarrassment of listening to myself a long time ago - I mean it is only me listening to these ideas so it isn't very hard and sometimes (say 2 or 3 times in twenty ideas) I get something worth pursuing so it is definitely worth it.

I usually have a guitar around me (I have a travel sized acoustic I like to take with me):

Yeah if I remember the Peavey Jack Daniels series right, these had very hot humbucker. And the picture from your Ibanez, is that a GIO? Should be a GRX70 GIO Ibanez from the design. These were sold with a small practice amp for about 150€. My local deal had one of those, I wouldn't expect a high output HB in such a thing since they are targeted at the absolute beginner level...and should be used in combination with that micro amp they packed it with. Taking a high output pickup there would most certainly end in endless feedback ;-).

@SimonSays28
I can't write on acoustics...far too less frets ;-) I'm still on the lookout for a Washburn from the end of the 80s which had 29 frets on the high strings... ;-)

OK, I was wrong, according to this page:
http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/Powersound_2#Powersound_2
they should be quite high output...maybe the magnets aren't that good anymore or the pots have too much resistance/oxidation on the conductive ring...you could try wiring on directly to the output if that gives more punch.
