Question

New Build for Oculus - Suggestions welcome

This is a build using parts of my current system and some significant upgrades.

Components without a price are ones I already own and that will be transferred to the new system.

Feel free to suggest upgrades or comment on any selected components. I will be buying mid-March in hopes some of the prices go down between now and then (and because I'll be away until then anyhow!)

    Thanks for the reply obzen,

Mostly I'm just interested in the filters because my dogs have turned the inside of my current Antec 900 into the ancient ruins of Egypt.

Yes, although no case is completely dust proof, so far it's been OK. Open cases are a nightmare (used to have an old carbide, similar to Antec stuff).

If you're worried about a particularly dusty environment, The R5 still has a few unfiltered open slots at the back, especially next to the PCI slot covers. Otherwise, the filtration is pretty good, and thorough. Note that case has front-to-back airflow, so in theory, those vents should exhaust, and not collect outside air. I haven't double checked.

I haven't tried anything, maybe duct taping the honeycomb stuff. I wouldn't bother about the slot covers themselves. Worth checking the temperatures, so you don't mess up the airflow.

AFAIK, pretty much all cases have the big open vent at the back. Kinda annoying.

Open/unfiltered slots are fine, so long as you have a positive pressure system and the intakes are filtered. Air being pushed in is more than air being pulled out. If all the fans are equal, then more intake fans, but that's not necessary as variable speed fans are pretty common, so you just need to make sure the intakes push in more air.

There's a YouTube video "JayzTwoCents" made about positive/negative/neutral pressure airflow. And one about a smoke test to check if you got it right.

Build is complete.  The Fractal case is pretty massive, even larger than my old Antec 900.  The filters look like they'll do a good job keeping most of the dust and hair off the components.  The build was surprisingly easy and it booted with no issues.  I'm a little afraid because I didn't draw blood during the build - meaning I probably haven't sacrificed to the tron gods.  Blood for the blood god!

First run through Firestrike was just over 9000, but with no overclock yet.  Lots of room with a 6600K and some DDR4 :)

No problems at all? That's lucky, my new build has a few issues, although it did boot without a problem first time (awesome feeling, my first ever self build computer) but it sometimes boots to black screen and i have to reset or turn off. Troubleshooting is troublesome, i just hope it's on the software side. It runs almost perfectly beside the start up problem though.

    6700k CPU, 980ti GPU, Samsung Evo 950 M.2 drive, 32gb ram.  I run a 5930k with 980ti and it's nice, too.

    I'll look into a 6700K but on PCpartpicker it's over $150 more.

    Are you suggesting a 6700 over a 6600K?

Mobo is expensive. The only big improvement (for me) is that the m5 has fewer front USB 3 ports. I find that builds with a bare-bones mobo have more gremlins than builds with a higher-end board. IMO you get what you pay for, and I can afford the extra bit of money in this case. Plus it's shiny and red.

    Thanks for the input cyber.

I very nearly went for a better Mobo purely because of the colour. I thought "no you're being stupid, it's not going to matter" and bought one in white. All of my other components are red/black and I can't look at it without my little OCD voice screaming "idiot, see what you did" at me lol.

Realized I haven't updated this thread in a bit.  Computer is running smoothly since I put it together.  Zero BSOD and no conflicts or unexplained reboots.  The Fractal R5 case is so quiet that I routinely think the computer has been turned off.

Unfortunately the best place for the tower is to my left, meaning I don't get to see the insides.
My desktop doesn't have to be flashy though.  I have an Alienware 14 and it has enough lights for 5 computers.

I'll see if I can clean up the office and take a photo for Cyber's "show off your rig" thread.  If anyone has questions about assembly or any of the components, please ask.

I also moved mine to my left and now can't see inside. I have my Eye Love VR kickstarter poster on the side! Who needs red motherboards and flashy lights...lol   B)

Very easy build and tons of room in the Fractal case.  Wire routing was easy, the airflow is good, and the filters are keeping dog hair and dust out of the case.
Unfortunately the case is massive, so now I don't have room left over for room-scale VR.

I plan on buying a few more standard 2TB HD so the right side should look a little less empty soon.
