Question

Oculus rift has dead pixels?

I have about 10 - 14 dead pixels in my rift, (its somewhat bothersome) and a little bit distracting.

What should I do? Should I contact Oculus and get a new dev kit?

I was talking about dust on the screen, not the lenses. You have to take the lenses out to clean the screen.

    i knew what you meant.

    I possibly have two...

but i'm not 100% sure if its dust. they kind of glow white. its all good for now, but, kinda curious how to tell a "dead pixel" from dust.

Dust can glow white too (depending on LCD technology and polarization). The best way to tell the difference is that a dead pixel cannot usually be cleaned off the screen by blowing or wiping. However, sometimes light pressure or tapping can repair a dead pixel.

There are programs like udpixel, or "fix stuck pixel" videos on YouTube, that may be of help. To be honest, I have not heard of anyone fixing a Rift like this, but its worth a shot.

eh, I'll live with it. (besides the HD version is coming right around the corner soon) so I can just hold onto the normal dev kit until the hd kit is released. Then the dev kit 1.1 will probably just be another relic sitting on my shelf haha.

I believe mine has done this too, it's a light green pixel, but sometimes goes away, or i'm not finding it all the time in the left side of the screen. Some of the time it's dust, but after only a day i see one on the left side go in and out. Will this ever be a 'thing of the past' where dead pixels won't happen anymore one day? My LED tv has had 13 of them within 3 months. Never tap on a dead pixel, it seems to breed more-from what ive seen happen anyway-and some sites say to fix it tap on the DP with a cloth-was i trolled?)

If you have a dead/stuck pixel, it probably won't go away by itself. In most cases, you will need to get a replacement to fix the problem. Please contact support@oculus.com and explain the issue. Please understand we will not replace second-hand units (for example, from ebay) or devices that have been opened or modified in any way. Thanks.

What would qualify as defective? 1 dead pixel? 5? 10? etc. Thanks.

I don't really a rift could be defective in less it had 20+ pixels. But 5 to 10 isn't really all that noticeable (but only when you're in dark areas of a game)

I would just like to say that dist inside the oculus looks very much like a dead pixel.

I had a single pixel that looked black with red and blue next to it.

I opened up the lenses and cleaned all with compressed air. When I put it back I saw 3 other "dead pixels". I probably just spread the dust around. Then I did a very good 10 min careful clean and MAGIC it was all fixed.

even the smallest dust speck can look terrible when it covers a pixel so try cleaning carefully is important.
