Oculus Rift & Vivid Dreams

Hey guys!

Just got my Rift yesterday and have been lugging it around everywhere I go showing off some of the demos on my laptop. The reactions are overall pretty positive and can't wait to start getting my hands a little dirty working on it. (Probably when things calm down at work...)

I did have an observation though and I was wondering if anyone else had noticed it.

Now you have to understand, I don't remember the last time I had a dream. My job is pretty fun but very routine and after playing in the Rift for only about 30 minutes (all I could manage before I started feeling a little unwell) I had a night full of crazy detailed dreams that I can actually recall.

Anyone else notice a difference in their sleep?

I've been a lucid dreamer for a while, but I've always been beyond terrible at dream recall. When I get my Dev kit, I'll see if there are any changes. Thanks for creating this thread, this is really interesting! :D

I met her at one of Castaneda's seminars he gave in the late 90's. She was a full blown nut case who, completely unsolicited, stood up in the middle of a lecture and screamed some random stuff about a dress or something... it was a totally off topic comment that just came out of the blue. She was so disruptive that she had half the audience in an uproar telling her to sit back down. She was 2 seconds from causing a riot and they had to escort her out of the room to calm her down.

After that encounter I saw her picture on her book a few years later and I scratched my head and said, "I recognize that girl from somewhere! Hey wait a minute, that"s the mentally unstable girl I met at the workshop." After reading her book it appeared she was still a bit off balance. Upon reflection, maybe she was just suffering from turrets syndrome and I judged her too harshly. If that's the case then I owe her an apology for misreading the situation.

So yeah, I wouldn't believe most stuff you read. ;)

Oh, I didn't really form an opinion about it, was just putting in a possible counter-argument for the sake of balance. :)

It's all cool. You make some great post and it was a solid counter-argument. :D

Just had a crazy vivid dream from the rift. I have been playing a lot of crysis 3 with vorpx which by the way holy sh!t is by far the best experience in the rift for me hands down. My dream was just like one of the multiplayer deathmatches I normally play expect a little higher resolution. The funny thing is I don't know which experience was batter the dream or the rift deathmatches. To me the seem about equal. Which is what gets me: if being in the rift is more emersive than a lucid dream, what will it be like when it is 4k and you have AAA titles supporting it? My guess is that we will be getting less sleep and start living two lives, one in the rift at night and one AFK going to work. Just my thoughts

While im yet to receive my Rift, i have always been interested in Lucid Dreaming but never had the motivation to actually really get into it, ive tried few techniques couple of times, didnt work and i give up on trying only to try again later, never archiving anything. The only times i had a lucid dream was a few times of sleep paralys where i couldnt move and for the love of god i dont know why but i saw some kind of a witch comming to me, me unable to move, scaring feeling it is. And im not making this up ive had those dreams long before i found and read anything about lucid dreaming and saw reports of people seeing a similiar or even the same figure. Anyway back to the original point of my post I believe The Rift can change the "boring" way to train yourself because it bring a way more enjoyable way to train your brain to spot those unrealities you have to spot in your dream in order to archive lucid in your dream.

Wow I have to admit I wasn't expecting to find a bunch of fellow oneironaut's in the oculus forums!
I've been into studying consciousness, perception, lucid-dreaming/astral-projections/oobe for 15+ years now and am very fascinated to see other VR enthusiasts share this same interest. How exciting! I wonder exactly how this new technology will affect human consciousness, awareness, and even memory/learning/neurology.
Just to contribute, here are a few great resources I have discovered over the years of researching this topic:

    http://www.astralpulse.com (astral projection/energy work/meditation related)
http://www.lucidity.com (stephen laberge's site - the godfather of lucid dreaming)
    http://www.saltcube.com (newer lucidity techniques)

I was an avid lucid dreamer during 2009 to 2011. I'd have one to three lucid dreams a night on average, and would log all of the dreams in detail. Took a few months to get to this stage of course.

I always referred to it as "natures virtual reality" because it is pretty much the peak of a false reality. You can experience touch, to the detail of feeling texture, hot and cold, weight, and even pains from aches to sharp prickly stabbing (none of which are influenced by the outside world, which is a common fallacy). You can even taste and smell in dreams; the most profound taste I experienced was a strong sweetness while eating candy (I suppose not taste as in individual flavours in that sense).

And of course, what you see and hear can seem as realistic as being in reality.

If only they could develop a headset that can manifest and control dreams to precision.

Now then, on a similar note, I haven't received my Rift yet, but I have had anticipation dreams which are usually nightmares where I put the device on and I can only see two tiny images as though I'm looking at the stereoscopic rendering on a desktop screen. Nuuuuuu.

When I go on diets I eat huge bowls of cereal or ice cream in my lucid dreams. It feels like cheating but it's not.
