Question

Palmer said big news coming

i just read this on Reddit. Looks like something is brewing but what I have no ideal. I think he is conspiring to make us all lose sleep trying to figure out what he has planned.

Could have something to do with this? But probably not!

It looks like Palmer knows what is coming for E3 and is having trouble keeping it in. Just let it out Palmer we promise not to tell anyone about it!

For me this is like saying to an apple fanatic: look here we have made the iphone 7. here you see it it fixes all the stuff that you complained about and its doesnt cost any more than the current one, but you cant have it, we will only sell you an iphone 4 with a broken antenna.
i really hope it is coming to the development kit soon, or that we can order high res replacement screens for the current ones, that would probably be the smartest move so they can get it out to developers much faster. :D

Yeah I just saw a video from tested dot com where Nate was discussing how much more difficult the process of integrating a new screen really is. I don't think there will be an upgrade kit made available. My best guess would be a Dev Kit 2 late this year if we are lucky.

I just saw it confirmed by Oculus that this is only a prototype model but it is still quite nice to see.

Yeah sorry but I do not think that anyone can call showing of a prototype with old optics and HD LCD panel "big news".

I'm sure we all 'knew' that they already secretly had prototypes with 1080p HD LCD panels in house for a long time.

And Oculus Rift support in Unreal Engine 4 was a given, so again not "big news".

Disappointing that they did not announce any ETA on a real new DevKit, partnership with Sony/Microsoft, or similar.

JDI has announced an interesting prototype, a 5.2" FHD OLED

They showed the prototype at SID last month.
Pilot production starts in spring 2014.

Looks like a nice display. At 5.2 inches it might need new lenses to reduce the black borders on the sides and maintain a solid FOV. I don't know if you could buy those off the shelf or if you would need to get those special made. May need software adjustments in the SDK also?

If someone successfully integrates a high quality HD or better OLED (or LCD) panel into the dev kit I would be all over it the very next day - regardless of price. They will instantly become well known and loved in the VR community. I think it might be easy to just pop one in there but to get it perfect could be a tough nut to crack.
