As long as you don't paint over the IR lights, or use a paint that allows the IR light to pass through. I "plan" on doing something similar, but I haven't gotten around to making a masking template for the headset.
Current WIPs using Unreal Engine 4: Agrona - Tales of an Era : Medieval Fantasy MORPG

I hope you're guys at Oculus are designing the CV1 so users can customize the front of it, like put goofy eyes on it. People like to customize their things, and this is an obvious customization option for headsets.

I was thinking the exact same thing. How does rifts cover thing work? It just hides and protects the optics and you can take it off if you're crazy? Or are the LEDs inside the cover? I'm not about to destroy my Rift, just curious. Replacable covers like the old Nokia phones sounds like it could be a thing. I would absolutely pay extra to have a pink Rift.
Cyber: I know, that's why I won't do it and why you guys should sell pink rifts, you'll have a grand total of 3 buyers!
Edit: Alternatively I can mark the LEDs with circles and do a pop-art thing... aaaaah that sounds like an expensive failure. I really want a pink t shirt though :(

Oculus could end up making their profits from just the covers for the consumer rift. Selling a measly cover for $5-$10 that cost less than a dollar to make could be a huge bonanza. The market for cellphone covers and accessories is HUGE! There are whole exhibits just for mobile phone accessories.
Also, when I order my CV1 I will definitely want one or two covers to personalize it.
Obviously this cover needs to be designed so it doesn't interfere with the markers.
I may have discovered a solution. One that is completely customizable and reversible. Any color or design you wish. Doesn't obscure the LEDs, and doesn't require assembly. At work now so I'll do some experimenting when I get home.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.
