Question

Question for cyber reality ?

I noticed on a thread you had a 980 gtx that you upgraded to a 1080. I also have the 980 gtx
I play many different types of vr including games. From your experience from 1-10 how much of an overall experience improvement do you think I will see. Do u think its worth the investment. I Appreciate any feedback

Cybereality thanks for your response. I'll probably get the 1080 ti since it's not that much more and it will make the card a little more future proof.

It's a huge waste of money unless you also do flatscreen gaming IMHO.  Imagine it like this, would you pay $800 for something that requires a stopwatch to PROVE there's an improvement?  It'll do flatscreen renders in very high res with great framerates.  But VR is locked in at both res and framerate.  You'll see a difference when you change the pixel density setting, but personally I don't think that's worth wasting so much money on a card for, the difference is negligible.  If you enjoy flatscreen gaming also that changes everything, then it's up to you to decide if it's worth that much to improve the eye candy.

It depends on what you want.  I'm a casual gamer so personally to me, something that would barely be noticeable would not be worth the HUGE cost involved in the upgrade.  If you do flatscreen gaming as well, the card can actually benefit by being able to go into the higher resolutions that the rift simply will not display.  Things are different than when I was growing up (80s/90s).  So many people can't enjoy a game if they don't think the gfx are good enough today.  If you are one of those people, a purchase like this is probably worth it.

The better card will benefit the rift by allowing you to increase the Sampling.  I don't think the cost to performance is worth the result myself because it hits performance too hard.  But if you buy a powerful card like the 1080 it can do that with little problem.  But is that worth the cost?  I'd seriously look at screenshots or something to compare.  To me it's exactly like upgrading a video card where the difference is so miniscule that you'd need a stopwatch to compare the difference in frame rate.  If the performance difference seems that small, I would NEVER spend the kind of money these cards cost to upgrade.

So it may very well be worth the money to you, it's just not worth it to me.

For me, after playing with supersampling repeatedly, It is absolutely worth it and mandatory to me until around 1.3. 1.5 is the point where your cost for benefit falls in the toilet. So tbh, a gtx 1070 in normal non-mining prices is pretty much the sweet spot for VR right now with performance per dollar. But as Falken mentioned, there's a definite cliff that happens. If you play non-vr games, you want to be a bit more future proof, You're the enthusiast type and want to get every inch of graphical fidelity and performance as possible out of your rift, and cost is not a big deal to you, 1080/1080Ti's are a great buy.

You say until 1.3. Games I believe are native at 1.0 so if the benifit is only up to 1.2 that's not much. But again if u have a 1070, u have not tried it with the 1080 in which many prople said the went up to 1,5 without the benifit falling
