I went from a rubber keyed 48k speccy (combined Xmas 1982 and my 7th birthday combined present. I then got an Amiga A500 in Xmas 1988 and replaced with an A1200 when it launched. It broke my heart selling this in 1994 but I needed a pc for uni :(

My first computer upgrade was adding 32k to my 16k spectrum... followed by a full-size keyboard. Should have known it would be a never ending process

I studied Deluxe Paint at Ray College of Design in Chicago around 1992. Even though Amiga went under I don’t regret it one bit. It was a great experience and great introduction to the world of computer graphics.

As as for the platform wars such as Apple vs Android or Oculus vs Vive, I usually find them pointless, because one technology/brand is supposed to leapfrog the one that came before it—that’s how technology advances.

^^^If you are picking between the Rift or Vive then it's the Rift because the headset allows you to plug in a 16k expansion pack and also comes with a green screen monitor, so the Rift wins this round easily. ;)

Hell yeah!
I grew up on an Atari Mega ST II...with a monochromic monitor and I always envied the Amigas for their graphical ability. Far later on (around 2000) I bought a totally speced out Amiga 1000 and started my 3D career (OK not quite I had the first free version of Blender running on my fathers P2 Celeron 3 months prior, and I played with Poser, Bryce and POVray before) with C4D on it...a year before I bought my first new PC for 3DS Max :D. Nowadays I could kick myself that I've sold both machines when I needed money for university. I could get a lot more nowadays for them but if I had the space I'd rather have them set up...just to play around with them from time to time.

Nice, these two were the topic of discussion when I learned all about flame wars.  That's when the battlefield was the old BBS.  I would never give up what we have now, but there was something magic about the BBS that is gone forever....

My brother learned to use computer graphics on a pirated copy of Deluxe Paint 4.  That got him his first interview with a gaming company.  He had no college degree, just raw talent and access to tools like Dpaint 4.  It had no manual, he had to learn by experimenting.  He earned the name "Hotkey" because he learned photoshop at work as though it was a pirated copy and just experimented and learned most of the hotkeys.  They lost his contact info and only remembered him as the kid that drew a Lupus Monkey that cast Lupus on people with his evil scepter, the character he chose to draw when asked to showcase his abilities on the fly.  The interviewer ran into him at Circle K when he was getting a Hot Dog and a thurst buster.  They hired him right there, they wanted to hire him earlier but lost contact info and the person within the company who referred him had already moved on.

He now has a great career, it all started from within a little program called Deluxe Paint 4 that was made for a computer that went out of business in 1994, a couple of years before he was even considered.  I'm not surprised you don't regret it one bit  :)

I bought the Deluxe Paint for Amiga manual a while ago, from ebay. Very nice, interesting stuff. I used to do my Speccy images by plotting the pixels one at a time! :o

I remember doing one the same way for the Amiga, it was of my then bike, a GPZ500S - it got featured on the cover CD of a mag, too! My claim to fame :p

I might still have it - have to see if I can find it.

Deluxe Paint was awesome. It was made by EA, back when they were cool. :)

I bought the paint program Brilliance. It cost me $300, which back then as a teenager was a major hit (the Amiga 500 itself cost me $700). Three weeks later Brilliance 2 was released for $99. I'm still pissed off by that.

If you want a modern version of Deluxe Paint, have a look at Pro Motion. It's directly inspired by Deluxe Paint and is made for pixel art and game graphics (it's got onion skin animation, tile maps, repeating image views, etc).

It's $39.
(I last used the trial version many years ago, not sure what it's currently like)

Oh man, I had Deluxe Paint on my Amiga 500 and like @falken76 s brother, it was my gateway drug into design and computer graphics.

This was way back in Poland when there were no computer copyright laws, you would go into a shop, browse a catalogue, buy a floppy and they would make you a copy, it was totally legit.

VU-3D by Psion before they got into organisers, and I was amazed. Medium & 3ds max would have seemed like some sort of witchcraft.
