Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

Not bad during 2020:

Oculus Rift CV1, Valve Index & PSVR2, Asus Strix OC RTX™ 3090, i9-10900K (5.3Ghz), 32GB 3200MHz, 16TB SSD "Ask not what VR can do for you, but what you can do for VR"

But then again, based on the last time I was part of the Steam survey, if my results were still being counted they would be contributing to the DK1 or DK2 numbers. :)

Holy crap, I just got asked to do the survey.
Hmm, which headset should I have active? I've got a CV1, Quest 2 and Rift-S plugged in right now. The CV1 is active, that sounds about right, let the best VR headset be counted. :)
So I look at the survey results before they are sent... VR headset was not detected.
Hmm, I guess it ignores Oculus headsets if SteamVR isn't active. I'll start SteamVR... no headset.
Oh, wait a sec, a thing I was doing with SteamVR is conflicting, I need to restore the Oculus drivers for SteamVR. Ok, NOW my CV1 and 3 sensors are detected. But instead of Touch controllers it detected I'm using a Kojack controller. I'm sure that won't hurt the results. :)

(Yes, I've been messing with writing custom drivers for SteamVR, for, umm, reasons)

The 2% limit has been passed for the first time ever  :o Now 2.13 % of Steam users have a hmd connected:

January 2021

The Quest 2 made a giant splash - even got ahead of the Index, but Index still is very hard to buy, and it's 3 times more expensive.

Quest 1 died quite a lot - going down a massive 9 %. Rift S and Vive also had marked decreases. CV1 and Quest 1 now nearly have similar amount of users.

G2 does not seem to be selling well, WMR only increased 0.15%, so no one seems to buy the Reverb G2 - or HP can't deliver enough...

Market shares:

Quest 2 shows a massive increase. Oculus has about 57% of the total.

The latest results from February 2021:

- a new record with 2.21% of Steam users having hmds connected to their rigs - last month it was 2.13 % (=4% increase). Quest 2 is now in the lead, and you could say that only Quest 2 and Index are moving forward, and Index is moving extremely slowly. Everything else is more or less declining or stationary. I don't see Reverb G2 moving at all, sadly.

Market shares:

Again Quest 2 shows its domination - but if Quest 2 can get more users into PCVR that's just awesome!

I think Quest 2 was lumped with Quest 1 prior to this month’s results—that might account for the large drop in Quest 1 use if those numbers have now been extracted.

Not to take away from Quest 2’s phenomenal rise, though—it’s a fantastic headset at a great price, so it’s not surprising that it’s doing so well, despite the Facebook backlash.

I recently put on my CV1 while I was fiddling with the controller setup in Doom VFR, and the difference was staggering. I might as well take down my sensors from the walls and pack them up, because I can’t go back to the Rift after getting used to the high resolution of the Quest 2.

Sure the res with the Index is a lot better than Rift CV1 - but playing very dark games and apps like Phantoms Covert Ops, Kobold, Gloomy Eyes, Affected The Manor and more, lcd hmds do no stand a chance against oled.
Of course Quest 1 might be great for that. I don't see myself relying fully on lcd for now. 2c.

Btw, also comfort with CV1 is just awesome - and the sound (awesome bass), and Touch built like tanks, batteries lasting months, non-blurry TAA, 90 hz (no dive below 45 fps even with ASW 2.0), low-res textures looking great/nice/acceptable thanks to the SDE, you can play in total darkness - and tracking is second to none with the CV1.
My CV1 stays  <3 - but you need to use ss 2.0 these days, and you can see further improved image quality even using ss 2.5, but you may need a 3080 or 3090 for that.

I think we are going to have to pry those last few DK2 from their dead cold hands. lol

I am sure Reverb G2 numbers would be better but they much like the Index are very hard to get right now.
Still loving mine.

I've never messed with SPUD, so I don't have "true blacks" in my CV1; just the dark grey that the Oculus runtime uses by default, because completely turning off pixels on OLEDs can cause black-smearing (the pixels take too long to power back up). I really don't notice any difference in black levels between my CV1 and my Quest 2.

Yes, the CV1's speakers are good, but I have Koss on-ear headphones that I can use with my Quest, which I believe are essentially the same as CV1's speakers. Frankly, I don't usually bother, because the built-in sound of Quest 2 is not bad at all, and it's more comfortable not having anything touching my ears. With the Elite strap and pu leather VR cover, I also find the headset just as comfy as the CV1.

The new Q2 Touch controllers feel quite a bit more solid than the Rift S/Q1 ones. They have chunkier rings and a larger face like the old CV1 controllers, and they feel very good in my (rather large) hands. They also have much-improved battery life, and the tracking these days is pretty near perfect. I don't remember the last time I even noticed any issues, and I don't perceive any significant difference from my 3-sensor CV1 setup. Playing in darkness is not something I ever cared for, even with my CV1--I don't want to be groping around in the dark when I take my headset off.

The other factor that I love with my Q2 is wireless PCVR with Virtual Desktop. I don't know what dark wizardry Guy Godin is up to, but the performance and image quality with VD has gotten so good it's unbelievable. Even when I'm sitting at my PC, I don't bother with the Link cable anymore, because Virtual Desktop feels indistinguishable from native PCVR, and I love not having a cable dangling from my headset. Wireless VR is definitely the way of the future.

My Rift CV1 served me well for over four years, and it was a great headset for its time, but the Quest 2 matches or exceeds it in so many ways that I just don't see the point in using it anymore. That's even without a new GPU--I can't wait to see how good the Q2 looks once I can get my hands on an RTX 3080 and really push the resolution to the max.
