Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

I had the hardware survey yesterday, but didn’t submit my results because it said No VR Headset Detected. Not sure when was the last time I used SteamVR, but I connect my Q3 just about every day via AirLink. I’ve had the survey not detect my Q3 even when it was actively connected and running, so I take their results with a grain of salt.

On the Q2 boost—a lot of people jumped in when it got reduced to the stock sell-off price. It’s completely sold out now and discontinued, so I guess we’ll see if it manages to break the 40% mark in August before it starts to drop off.

Yeah, the hardware survey is supposed to detect Quests via Air Link and Virtual Desktop but if they don't happen to be powered on at the time of the survey, how does that work? cable connection would just need the headset to be in standby..... maybe.

Anyway, 3s sales won't show up until the October survey presumably so I'd expect no big movements until then.

I had the survey pop up again last night, so I connected my headset and went into SteamVR home. Survey results still said No VR Headset Detected. I thought Steam kept track whether you had connected to SteamVR in the past month, so the headset didn’t need to be connected at the time of the survey, but this isn’t the first time I’ve been unable to get the hardware survey to see my Quest.

Actually have not had the Steam Hardware Survey pop up for I don't know how many months, could be a year - but usually I just turn on the rig, wait a few seconds, turn on the Index controllers, put on the hmd, do my VR stuff, exit VR and turn off the rig - without turning on the monitor, maybe I'm missing tons of Steam messages ðŸ¤” ðŸ¤—

But if Steam has 130 mill users, and just 1 in 130 or 260 answer, statistics hopefully are pretty good. And it's still more or less all we have.

Ok, we do have more, but then it get more complicated, moves beyond SteamVR, and may show different tendencies than increased adoption. What bothers me greatly is seeing a reduction of ratings in the Rift/PCVR Store. Robo Recall just went from about 11,500 ratings to about 8,800. Meta may have deleted some old and inactive accounts - but even considering that, ratings in the Rift Store should be exploding with 20+ mill Quest users - instead everything in the Rift Store is dying - even Lone Echo has lost ratings.

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/VR-Experiences/Lists-of-killer-apps-and-games-by-user-ratings-for-the-Rift-hmds/td-p/716450/

I've talked to some new Quest 3 users who had no clue what's in the Rift Store - they never heard of the big Oculus exclusives. And with no promotion and no sales, many casual users may never know of these gems - gems, which still could be used to sell even more Meta hmds.

Even with some ignorant new users, 20+ mill Quest users still should provide many sales in the Meta PCVR Store, it's a big mystery to me why the Meta PCVR Store is close to completely dead. Counting the big gems, I'm not sure there are more great PCVR games on Steam than in the Meta Store...

Survey popped up again today, so I checked my results--my Quest 3 is finally shown, so I submitted them. I guess opening SteamVR home the other day did it, but you have to do it before you're asked to participate in the survey, as it seems that Steam has already assessed your system at that point.

Maybe it's time to catch up on this thread - if not for anything else, then for completeness 🙂 My last post had results for July 2024 - here are the rest ðŸ˜‡ (Could not find September though, all images below are from Reddit):

August 2024

October 2024

November 2024

December 2024

There's something odd about November and December though - note how all numbers are the same apart from the last two listings. So seems December 2024 is wrong - but would be nice to see 2.4% in VR - that would probably be the highest number ever. About 2/3 of all hmds used for SteamVR are from Meta.

Maybe November is wrong??

According to the lists, in October were 2,05 % in vr already, but in November it drops to 1.73
That's kinda strange.

Yes, but hard to see how numbers from November can be exactly the same for December. Also, I just checked - Valve has just corrected the December numbers - the correct ones (I assume) are now:

December 2024

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

These numbers now fit a 0.4% gain from November's 1.73% of Steam users with VR headsets. Index and Quest 3S increased the most, but interesting how slow it goes for the PSVR2. The PSVR2 is an amazing hmd for the price, but of course users need to try the hmd to see that (that said the Bluetooth support may still results in issues for some - and the adapter seems constantly sold out, which also will limit adoption).

The real growth from Christmas 2024 will of course not be seen before next month.

Not much has happened the last 6 months or so, but I think we got a strange anomaly for June 2025, where Quest 3 and Index shared similar popularity:

JUNE 2025

Interesting that Index, which is much more expensive than Quest 3, still holds up well. The reduction in Quest 3 users was not compensated by an increase in Quest 3s users, although Quest 2 users had a 2% increase.

Still saddening to see a reduction in users with VR hmds, we might need more Alyx class content instead of more hmds...

Somewhat interesting results from July 2025, where Index regained the position as 2nd most frequently used hmd - edging out the Quest 3:

JULY  2025

As Quest 3 is much cheaper than Index, I was expecting Quest 3 to constantly increase its distance from the Index, but at least this does not seem to be the case right now.

Also seeing Pimax and BigScreen Beyond - there is much talk about these hmds among PCVR users, but in fact no-one uses these hmds. The top 5 hmds account for 75% of the hmds used for SteamVR, even my Rift CV1 is much more popular than Sony, Pimax or BSB hmds, lol.
