Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

Dear parents, right. If that's the way things are going to be, you bastards, if you send me the 2080Ti then I'll send the horrible child BACK TO YOU!!!!

Reminds me of a film years ago, can't remember the name of the film now, starred Danny DeVito who's wife was kidnapped and he told them to keep her lol

Yea, I was on board to pick up the 2080TI until I saw the performance per dollar for it and how small of an increase it is over the 1080TI. Yea, I'll wait another generation and maybe even the gen after that if this is the new norm.

Seems like everything froze the last month, then again it is winter... (ok, that wasn't really funny, sigh):

How can we interpret these numbers? The number of Steam users may grow gradually each month, so the number of VR users needs to grow similarly just to be the same (and maybe it didn't). It's probably not reasonable to think that no new VR users were registered during the last month, maybe we're seeing that the number of users unplugging VR HMDs from their gaming rigs has been similar to the number of new VR users. That would not be a trend I like to see - let's hope for some great new VR games to appear soon, the more or less old giants like Lone Echo and Robo Recall may need some help soon... Personally I find is very strange that VR isn't selling much better - the biggest problem may be that many persons have never experienced VR and have no clue what it really feels like, sadly.

For the first time 2080 Ti users are now appearing = 0.20%. This indicates that there are about twice as many Rift than 2080 Ti users, but 2080 Ti may be closing in fast...

I actually participated, for the first time ever, in the February hardware survey. whooo!

There's really only one thing that these numbers mean:
VR IS NOT DEAD

I wonder if people who are interested in VR adoption are now figuring the main player's next headsets are not far off so best to hold off jumping in until they hear some announcements.

Fully agree. New users may be greatly impressed by the amount of VR content, but maybe it's becoming harder to keep the old-timers interested. The latter may require an ongoing flow of new high-quality content, and that may be an entirely new/different ballgame... To have and to hold...

 Steam is actually kind of stagnant at the moment. The 5 or 6 most popular games aren't on Steam including the 2 hottest ones Apex and Fortnite. A lot of potential VR customers are probably too busy playing Apex Legends.

We can only hope that the rumored Valve VR announcement during GDC will cause a stir with SteamVR.
