@RuneSR2 - Do you have any idea if you can connect a WMR headsets like the HP Reverb to some base stations? Or do knuckles connect using blue tooth to a WMR headsets? I want to get some base stations and knuckles for the HP Reverb basically.

Never seen it done, but I guess it should work connecting Knuckles to base stations - and using Reverb. That would give you a Gen 3 display and Gen 2 controllers  ;) It would also be more expensive than the Index, but probably just a few hundred bucks...
I would recommend asking Valve Support if they think it'll work - it does say here: "Valve Index Controllers are compatible with any Headset featuring support for SteamVR Tracking".

I think you can contact Support here:

This is all very interesting. I would be interested in this too.

Surely in this big world of ours there must be people playing HP Reverb with knuckle controllers already?

or Vive and knuckle controllers etc?

You can use SteamVR controllers with WMR headsets, using the OpenVR Input Emulator, and editing steamvr.vrsettings to activateMultipleDrivers. SweViver did a tutorial on it a while back. And seeing how Knuckles are SteamVR controllers, they 'should' work as well.

What would really be cool, is if this could be done with the Quest, through VirtualDesktop and SteamVR. I'm pretty sure it's already using the OpenVR Input Emulator to get the Quest going in the first place. I think(?).

BTW, some dude just went into the WMR Reverb fire ;)

Index vs Reverb (no contest)

I ended up ordering the ‚new and revised‘ Reverb last weekend and just gave it a whirl.

All I have to say is ,cherish your Index guys and gals!‘

I had never used WMR before and now I know why. There is drift, the controllers are atrocious and Microsoft somehow managed to create an experience even clunkier than SteamVR.

As to the HMD, the res is very very nice. And that‘s about it. I found it extremely uncomfortable, the sound is tincan like, the FOV felt smaller than Rift or OG Vive, the panels are dim, there is pronounced pupil swim and fishbowl distortion (how is that possible within such a small FOV), the cable is very short and heavy and I felt nauseous after 20 minutes of use.

Once I figure out the chaos that is HP‘s webshop I‘ll be sending it right back.

That said, the res bump is absolutely noticeable and makes me wish for an Index with 2k by 2k panels.

Björk has just released her new Vulnicura VR album - with Index support:

https://youtu.be/gE3wLCcnTHY

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1095710/Bjrk_Vulnicura_Virtual_Reality_Album/

I didn't mind $30 for Westworld, but to me $30 for basically a music experience seems expensive and may limit sales a lot (also I'm not that fond of her music). Here's a 360 degrees taste of the music:

https://youtu.be/gQEyezu7G20

BTW, here's what Björk has to say about the album:

i am so happy to share finally the complete version of vulnicura VR with all the songs now available in one place - it is a digital home for all the virtual reality videos we made , and will be released this friday 6th september

the VR videos have been touring museums around the world as part of the Björk Digital exhibition , but now that it is possible to put them all out on an accessible gaming platform available to everyone , i am thrilled for people to be able to download them in their own home

vulnicura VR has been a long journey which started when me and andy thomas huang started talking about how we wanted to document "stonemilker"

we then filmed it on a 360 camera on a beach in iceland in november 2014 . we werent sure how to share it because of how few owned VR headsets . we started by putting a dozen of headsets in Rough trade record shops in brooklyn and bethnal green and got really good reactions . i then got offered to do an exhibition in sydney and by june 2016 we brought headsets there with "stonemilker" , "notget" and "mouth mantra" and then adding live performance of "quicksand" with AR for tokyo july 2016 . the exhibition then travelled to london , montreal and reykjavík in the autumn where we added "black lake" and "family" . it has also been to los angeles , mexico city , houston , barcelona , moscow , poznan , buenos aires , bogota and it is currently travelling between 4 cities in brazil

the whole process has been an improvisation , trying to keep faith in formats . it is too easy for musicians to turn pessimistic after cds have evaporated but i wanted to try to have courage to grow along with how 360 sound and vision tech was growing . with every challenge try to turn it into an additional gift for the ideology in the music . these 7 VR videos are done with 6 different companies , 4 softwares 6 different directors . early in this journey it became obvious that the process for great 360 sound mastering did not exist so we had to invent our own on the way .... there were dozens of other similar challenges ......

i am someone who absolutely loves music and gets so moved by the sensation of it . when andy proposed filming stonemilker on the beach it was perhaps him tapping into how spatial and connected to nature my songs are . i wrote that song , walking on the same beach and filming it in 360 and sharing it in surround sound seems the most natural way to invite my listeners humbly into my music .

the themes for the digital animations were a collaborations of mine with james merry and i would like to thank him for being my co-pilot for the visual art direction for this whole thing . he is so enormously talented and has had the patience to listen to my endless tales about the psychology and the sensation of healing through my most difficult album to write to date : my heartbreak album . it came to my surprise how metaphysical and "selfhelpy" heartbreak-healing really is . there is a reason why mankind has talked about broken hearts for aeons . you physically feel as a part of your body has fallen apart , has been torn off . there literally is a chestwound that is sown together and healed . when i first was watching VR in 2014 , the way i recognized it´s strengths and weaknesses seem to match the album i had in my hands perfectly . when you put the headset on , it is very isolating . heartbreak is . it also gives an escapist relief . which heartbreak needs . but there is also a hidden quality i personally think is going to be the most unexplored in the future , the healing potential of VR . the amount of crying that was done into the headsets in sydney convinced me and james that we were on the right track , this was something people were experiencing on a visceral level .

[...]

i hope you enjoy this ......

as always i am grateful for your interest

warmthness

björk

Reverb blows Index away with resolution. Sense of presence is
significantly enhanced. im hoping software adjustments can be done to
reduce chromatic abberation, eliminate blue border on bottom, fix
warping, and increase vertical FOV since i feel the image does not go to
the bottom of the screens. Still best consumer screens on market even
with these issues.

I've given up on listening to what reviewers say because to some people the HP Reverb is awesome and others it is not. You only have to read this thread to see that some people like the Valve index and some don't. I've ordered the HP Reverb and if it's crap it can just go back. People talk about the controller being crap, but there's games and sims that don't require you to even use the controllers. For the price of £564 and high resolution displays, I think I'm going to enjoy playing Fallout 4, SkyRim and Elite Dangerous etc.
Hell the Rift S is £399 for much lower resolution displays and people even talk about controller lag. But yeah, it just goes back if it's pants. I'm also looking at using it for Sims, which most people say it's good at and I'm also looking to get HTC Cosmos if the reviews are good. So Happy days :)

Currently the top ranking "new and trending" VR game on Steam is Final Archer - it's basically a wave shooter (maybe slightly like Sacralith), but it looks awesome - and it's only 7 bucks:

https://youtu.be/kZOiuXo5kMg

According to the devs:

Final Archer VR is ultimate archery FPS VR game. As a final archer, you must defend your territory from monsters. Final Archer VR is only available in single mode, and you can gradually clear the stages according to the difficulty. Take over best teleport spots and choose proper magic skills strategically to defeat monsters!

Get it here - doesn't support Rift or WMR:

Quite annoying - the game does look great, but there's no support for left-handed persons - in short I'm left-handed and the game's currently unplayable for me. Of course I've let the devs know what I think about such design choices ;)
