Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

@SimonSays28 you ever read The Talisman by Straub and King ? I've read that book a thousand times and it's crying out for a movie. One of my favourite reads of all time ;)

BLACK HOUSE is the first one in the series, The Talisman is a sequel, great books indeed. Also many connections to The Dark Tower. (Which should have been a Netflix miniseries not the abomination that was the movie)

I love The Talisman and Black House - and very much love The Dark Tower series of books. Also love how at the beginning of Tommyknockers, Jim Gardiner wakes up on Arcadia Beach near the amusement park from The Talisman and has a conversation with Jack. It may or may not be the same Jack, because The Tommyknockers is set about 7 years after The Talisman and Jack is referred to as the kid by Jim Gardiner - but he would be about 18 or 19 at that point, which I remember still being called a kid by people 10 or 15 years older than me when I was around that age. Some of the things Jack says are just heartbreaking.

Yep all those books would make great movies / netflix series.

The Dark Tower (Which should have been a Netflix miniseries not the abomination that was the movie)

I like most of Stephen King adaptations, usually I can find some redeeming quality in them - and even if they are cheesy, I love the stories so much it is easy to forgive any issues I have with the casting, cinematography, and just general cheesiness of most of his films.

But the Dark Tower adaptation was a gut punch - the casting was off for everyone from Roland and Jake, right down to Flagg... well Matthew McConaughey could have been a good choice, but they dropped the ball with his characterization in the script.

I was willing to give it a chance - in spite of the miscasting of roles, and the cuts and everything because King gave it his blessing and even acknowledged it's canonical role in the series. I tried to go in with no expectations - hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

But it is not only a bad Stephen King movie, it is a bad movie in general - with no redeeming aspects from a b-movie perspective.

Honestly I could wax all day on how terrible it is - but I refuse to give it that much of my time. I believe there is a TV series based on book 4 in the works - not sure if it is still happening, but if they nailed that one they could restructure the series in a more linear fashion following Roland's journey from that path onward which if they completely disowned the movie could work great.

Getting back to the topic of films ....

I found this today on DVD and I had completely missed it. It is a real gem called Project ALF. Saw it on the shelf  at a HMV store and had to purchase it.

    Its hilariously awesome.

The scene with Hopper and Walken (Sicilian, eggplant...) is amazing.  This whole movie is great.

Love Dark City and 13th Floor.

Contact is great too - and I also liked Frequency from around the same time period (97-2000).

On the list of films that nobody I know seems to like but I absolutely love are the 3 Richard Kelly films (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales, and The Box).

Donnie Darko gets love for sure - but Southland Tales is one of my favourite films of all time, even though it is a very dense movie that took me at least 3 watches and reading a comic book prequel to fully understand the scope of it. The Box is great too - but again, it is a visually dense movie that operates in the realm of interpretation - so definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Just saw Solo yesterday with the wife - we both loved the movie, I think it's one of the best SW movies I've seen in a very long time. I'm a great fan of Harrison Ford and really wanted to dislike Solo, but I had to surrender - it simply was an awesome movie (and $300,000,000 budget ;-) I saw the blu-ray 3D version.

We did share some frontal lobe anesthesia, maybe that did help improve the movie

Fun thing, L3-37 felt like a true personality copy of my dear wife, lol
