Question

The Official TV Thread

Just thought I'd start a thread where we can all share what we've all been watching.

I'm just finishing the fifth and final series of The Gentle Touch starring the lovely Jill Gascoigne as DI Maggie Forbes. It's a programme from the 80s and is excellent.

Next up for me is the second series of Monkey, known as Monkey Magic in the States I think. If you haven't seen it then you HAVE to check it out. It's a Japanese programme from the 80s that tells the legend of Monkey, Piggsy, Sandy and Tripitaka who travel through Asia to pick up the Buddhist Sacred Scrolls. Some may be familiar of the legend from the video game Enslaved: Odyssey Of The West.

I love rewatching stuff from the 70s and 80s regularly, they don't make telly like that any more which is a real shame. All we seem to see these days is mostly reality TV bollocks with the odd gem hidden here and there. :(

So what are you guys and girls watching?

Two days ago I started watching the series From. I finished it this morning (at least the 18 episodes released so far, season 2 is still ongoing with maybe 2 episodes left).

    Quite cool horror/mystery series.

I like that the show has remained about the threat of the town and people trying to discover what's going on, rather than falling back on just human drama. There's still human drama, but plenty of evil stuff too.

I just hope it will get a satisfying ending, without being cancelled.

In Australia, it streams on Stan.

Nice recommendation, Kojack! I've been hearing good things about this. Once this season wraps up and the reviews aren't terrible, I will definitely give it a go 🙂

Just finished Manifest on Netflix - it was a fantastic ending to about 5 or 6 series - a nice change.  Highly recommend it.

I've seen Manifest listed on netflix, but didn't try it because I'd heard it was cancelled.

    Looking into it more:

Seasons 1-3 were NBC. They cancelled it.

Netflix picked it up and made season 4, which they released as two half seasons with a break in between (like how I thought Inside Job was on season 2 but it was just season 1 part 2), then cancelled it so no season 5.

The original plan was for 6 seasons.

It sounds a bit like Babylon 5. It had a planned 5 season arc, but with looming cancellation they had to wrap up everything in season 4. Then it got approval for season 5 afterall, but they'd already finished the main arc.

Season 2 of From is over. Some things got resolved, new things got introduced, and it ended on a cliff hanger.

Something happened that immediately made me think "oh no, they aren't resolving the story THAT way are they?" But they didn't, so I'm happy.

    Really great show.

Apparently season 3 isn't officially confirmed, but local canadian unions have said another season is green lit and ready to go into production, but is delayed due to the writers' strike.

Secret Invasion is interesting. Samuel getting his own series is cool.

I don't like the AI generated intro, it looks crap.

I do like hearing an Australian Skrull. 🙂

    Just started seeing this show:

Not sure I'd rate it 9/10 like it's rated on IMDB, maybe more 7.5/10 - but we've only watched the first 4 episodes.

The show is on HBO, but I got the 4K disc version - which costed more than one year of HBO subscription, lol:

I guess it's like red wine - the last few percents of perfection cost a lot. Using downloaded Google Play apps on the Sony TV like Disney+ and HBO etc, then the Sony X1 processor isn't supported, and I like some MotionFlow enabled. To be supported the apps need to be provided by Sony to fully support the TV (Nexflix is supported due to a collaboration between Netflix and Sony). And you do not get the full 4K experience when streaming due to more limited data, even if it's close. And with the discs, Dolby Atmos is a sure thing.

So I still buy the discs 🙂

Btw, for Ahsoka next week I'll have to endure those dreaded stuttering 24p with Disney+, but still going to watch it - this one does not come on discs:

Kinda looks like a much more feministic version of the Mandalorian, lol.

Btw, the PSVR2 (and PS5 app) for Disney+ also comes with stuttering 24p and no motion compensation, making it really hard to enjoy.

Episode 5 was a game changer for The Last of Us, I can see it's the top rated episode at IMDB 9.4. I'd like to raise my overall rating from 7.5 to 8.5. Still need to see 3 episodes 🙂

Also the 4K HDR image quality is reference especially in episode 6.

I have no experience with Ahsoka or Thrawn, besides the bits in the mandalorian. I know of them, but never watched the animated series or read the extended universe stuff.

It looks like it could be fun. But for every Andor there's a Book of Boba Fett. I wonder where this one falls on the quality scale.

Is it just me or does the live action Thrawn look like they painted Star Trek's Data blue?

I've been off work recovering from surgery for a few weeks, so I've been watching a lot of TV. Here's some series.

    Currently watching:

    Pending Train

A 10 episode Japanese series. Passengers on a train are mysteriously transported into a post apocalyptic world and need to survive using only what they have with them.

I've got one episode left. It's not bad, an interesting idea. But there's some conflict that doesn't resolve in a satisfying way. A bit too "lets all be friends". Then a love quadrilateral which is a bit annoying.

    The Uncanny Counter

A Korean series with season 2 currently being released weekly.

A team of 5 people with special powers fight against demons.

I'm most of the way through season 1, going to finish it after lunch. This is a great show. It's pretty bloody, there's serious stuff and comedy, cool fight scenes and some satisfying rage fueled revenge (unlike Pending Train).

    Very cool.

    Ghost Wars

SyFy cancelled it after 1 season.

A remote Alaskan town is being taken over by ghosts that want to kill the townspeople.

I've still got a couple of episodes left. So far this is quite good. Ghosts killing people either directly or by making them see illusions.

    Series I've finished:

    The Irregulars

Netflix cancelled it after 1 season.

A street gang of youths investigate paranormal crimes for Dr Watson (yes, the Sherlock one).

I really liked this one. The paranormal stuff was interesting and I like the cast.

Fans of Sherlock Holmes may not like this interpretation (or that he's not the lead character), or people who get hung up on historical accuracy of casting. Too bad, it's a good show. I wish there was more.

    Lockwood & Co

Netflix cancelled it after 1 season.

Around 1973 ghosts (that kill with a touch) start to invade England. By 2015 over 1.5 million people have died from ghost contact. Only certain children can see the ghosts, so they are trained to fight them.

This makes me think a tiny bit of an english Supernatural. It does stuff like making protective circles from salt or iron chains, researching each ghost to find what is tying them to the real world, etc.

I liked this one overall. But I was a bit disappointed that it was really one long story. I was hoping for some "ghost of the week" style episodic adventures, like the first half of The Irregulars.

    Shadow and Bone

2 seasons so far, might be a third coming (it's not cancelled yet, but it's by Netflix so only a matter of time)

Imagine a live action TV series of The Last Airbender. That's pretty much what this is, but MUCH better than the live action airbender movie.

An evil guy hundreds of years ago created a gigantic wall of darkness (filled with monsters) that split the continent in half. A prophecy says one day a mythical sun summoner will be able to destroy it.

I love Korean Dramas!!!!!!!! There is one called Celebrity- shows a girl that starts to turn into a Influencer and see's how they really are and what they do to get there. They were mad at her being the next big influencer and she dies...She then comes back to share the secrets of these people.

    https://youtu.be/OIboeCkVKJk

Another one is Tomorrow- about the jobs in the afterlife you get. There is a squad that focuses on getting demons on earth. Another one is making people that are depressed don't reach a grater extent.

I was watching Tomorrow. It was good, but I found it a bit too emotionally draining. Being focused on suicide, they did too good of a job at showing what led people to it.

A coujple more Korean shows I liked (I've probably mentioned them in this thread): Sweet Home (monster apocalypse), The Silent Sea (scifi thriller set on the moon).

Found out that the price of seeing Dune 2 in the local movie theater for 3 persons including popcorn and sodas would be the same as 1 year HBO Max subscription, so I got the latter 🤗 Also wanted to see True Detective Season 4:

Not the best season of True Detective, probably the worst, but still worth watching. Then I found out, HBO Max also had this:

I did enjoy Easttown more then True Detective Season 4 - but then found this on Max too, and it's my current winner of best TV-shows on Max so far:

So have been doing some time in front of the TV - but only need 19 more episodes to see everything in Fargo 😅 With a rating close to IMDB 9.0, especially Fargo Season 1 is among the highest rated TV shows in the world.
