Question

VR isn’t dead. It was just taking a nap

For those that had been questioning why things had been quiet on the VR forum front of late, here is a really good overview from a VR developer on what they see is happening.

Note - For transparency, I write a column for a news service (VRFocus) that is funded by nDreams, but am impartial to their position, and only report what I feel comfortable covering.

This is why I say it's here to stay because it can only improve. The television didn't die just because it wasn't in colour right from the start. Televisions also had crappy content to start of with but it didn't stop it growing into what it is today. ....You can't just please everyone all at once.

I understand what you have been saying - and it was a refrain used during the previous phase to try and adopt VR as it is today. But the reality of the situation is not the same as smartphones or television adoption.

You see at the birth of both of those techs the fundamentals of operation, content availability and development application were roughly sorted out, and the main manufacturers (that survived) followed an agreed 'standard'. Part of the reason why the Apple smartphone jumped into the lead was not its "originality" but how it put the pieces together and the content development right (indie apps fuelling the system beyond Apple's dreams).

As one that was involved with the microcomputer boom of the late 80's - the idea that just because you had computers meant you had a computer games industry was a false positive - and it took the standardisation (plug-n-play) of the console explosion to establish gaming into the billion dollar business it is today. Once again idies and startup content fuelling the penetration.

In trying to bully this latest phase of development to establish VR, into their private cash-cow, excluding the rest, the current executives may have "scr*wed-the-pooch" and forced the market into a problematic cul-de-sac - which only the standalone approach can escape from? The indie drive of the DK1/2 squandered for dreams of a "exclusive" environment.

I don't know of any Television or Mobile Phone company that doesn't develop with the intent to establish their own private cash-cow. In fact, every private business typically relies on their own private cash-cow, that's how Capitalism works. Unless a business decides that declaring Bankruptcy is a goal.

Oculus has open sourced the DK1 and DK2, as well as provide full Developer support for the Oculus SDK. That is the literal opposite of bullying development.

There is no evidence whatsoever of a problematic cul-de-sac that exists within any single VR company. The VR Industry itself is flourishing, and discussions like this (vr is dead) typically stem from utlerior motives.
