Question

Waiting is hard... (Ideas while we wait)

I think I know what's going to be the next big thing.

Real 3D "movies" of real people that you can watch from all angles as if they were there with you, with positional tracking, captured with multiple scanners, played back thanks to Carmack code compressing the hell out of that 4D data to be accessed and streamed to the GPU as needed depending on where you look.

Not 3D 360 degree movies... not real time rendered fake stuff. Real people, like they are really there with you.

Not whole stadiums, just one person. Also movies as they scan actors and put them in CGI spaces anyway. And as we take our loved ones to be scanned so we get to keep their memories forever, maybe we'll get that feeling our grandparents must have felt when they took our parents in for their first photos.

No physics, no dynamic lighting, no simulations, no artificial intelligence, no destructible environments... just predetermined, recorded stuff streamed using the information of where you are looking and the prediction of where you will be looking, which Oculus is already doing.

Yes, it's a whole lot of data. But all types of work andoptimizations Carmack has done and let us know he looked into in the past years should translate so well to this. And he has supercomputers with special purpose computing units at his fingertips, with lower level access.

What we have seen so far is nothing. Knowing that is what makes waiting hard. It's like you knew the photo was coming to town and everyone is excited but you know they are doing this thing called "movies"and you believe it will be big.

A "They Hunger" mod for HL2, with a tool that takes 3D map data from the real world and converts it to HL2 maps, so that you can just walk around in VR in your own town, shooting zombies, would be the bomb. A slow paced, survival type of game, better suited for VR. Buildings would all have locked doors, textures would not match real life but that would be okay. As long as it came with one town that was really worked on after the tool conversion, modders would just want to take their town to that level.

A game with the pace of Resident Evil 2, set in a real life location, with zombies that look very creepy thanks to the uncanny valley level of graphics mixed with a more human less evil looking zombie design, would give people nightmares.

"Evil comes to your town". That would be very "today". Would be perfect if it was set in Athens, Ohio, at Halloween.

    1. Samsung buys AMD
    2. Combines ZEN CPU cores, HBM and Greenland GPU cores on a SOC design. 2-4 complex cpu cores and 4-6 simpler cores, for a total of 8. With a built in fpga running tracking code.
    3. Manufactures it at 7-10nm in it's new fabs that it has invested 14.7 billion dollars in, in order to start the production in the second half of 2017.
    4. Creates a stand alone HMD that does not require a computer or a smartphone, with the HMD design experience that Oculus brought it.
    5. Gets eye tracking in too, with the experience that FOVE which it has invested in financially, brings in. Creates wonders with that SOC by using foveated rendering.
    6. Uses Lighthouse which Valve has made available for positional tracking.
    7. Supports two of the wristbands pictured above, with 2 cams similar to nimbleVR/Leap Motion on them, tracking the fingers upside down.
    8. The end result is a hand/finger/head tracking standalone VR device that works in all the rooms you set lighthouse base units. And it has a very strong APU based on x86-64 architecture and out of box support for tools like UE4 or Unity5. Has support for Mantle, Vulkan etc.
    9. Makes deals with Disney for content based on Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar movies
    10. Comes to the market at the end of 2017 as the first 4K VR console, using Samsung display panels and wide fov lenses, with a price that is around a traditional console and a nice big TV. Considering Samsung's 2250 ppi-level 11K display for mobiles goal by 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, 4K VR console by 2017, 8K by 2018-2019, 11K by 2019-2020 should be possible based on the same design. By 2020, we should have perfect VR that is untethered, high fov, retina resolution, tracks head-eyes-hands-fingers, uses foveated rendering and works at high frame rates with low latency.

Maybe Apple will make it happen. Maybe Sony. Maybe Disney itself. Maybe Valve. But this is just bound to happen. And probably around 2017-2018. All the pieces are there.

Special movie theaters where what's happening on the screen, in 3D, is there, the rest of the field of view has VR that goes with the movie overlayed on top of the world. You watch the next Doom presentation, with hundreds, in Hell. You take the next Jurassic Park ride in a movie theater. You watch Wall-E, Up, Inside Out by teleporting to this animated world, with your loved ones and a room full of strangers, all in awe.

(Then again... Oculus VR showed me that I may be too optimist. Waaay too optimist)

    1994 PS,
    2000 PS2-Xbox,
    2005 PS3-X360,
    2013 PS4-Xbox One,
    2018 PS5 & VR consoles,
    2023 PS6 & Retina VR consoles.

Portable VR consoles/PCs are the future. Portable PCs with SteamVR and a HTC Vive is the prototype of the future. The Rift devkits with a desktop was the prototype for that. That's what the PC has.

Sony can move ps4 + morpheus to a portable format, in time, with a lighthouse type tracking. Still has time.

Portable AR consoles based on phones is the further future.

    MS-FB-OVR... ovr compatible hololens?
HoloLens xbox that streams your xbox games to your HoloLens and lets you pause for a call at your desk, at work. Or maybe it's a video that you're pausing.

Google-Samsung... probably gonna do something like that just with video with phones. may even give you a railgun at the office.

Apple... here's AppleVR with minions running all around you and your text messages layered on top at high levels of anti aliasing using retina resolution internally, running on the hardware with Metal. And you can use the plunger gun from Raving Rabbids to shoot the minions away.

Nerd rage about the cpu unit Apple uses.

HTC-Valve. How about we give you the cube and a portal gun for your walls. Don't you love the cube?

Portal game with minion looking cj7 goofballs instead of cubes... in AR... You can grab them with the controllers and toss the to the portals on the wall too... Fun for the whole family.

If you get the most VR friendly parts of Doom, give the player a low speed jetpack and classic id weapons like a plasma gun, tell him it's a training program for the future generation of soldiers who will be operating flying drones with light armors and guns... Doom still would work as a great VR title. I know it takes control of the camera from the player, I know it is very fast paced but it looks also very modable with enough wide spaces to enjoy flying with a jetpack and shooting demons on the ground and enough tight spaces to enjoy room scale VR as a shoot to survive type of game. Taking control of a new drone at the checkpoint could replace "respawning".

With SteamVR, HTC Vive, id tech 6, nvidia Pascal... 2016 sounds like a wet dream for an id/Carmack fan, if such a mod or similar is possible.

Nvidia doesn't need to make a hmd themselves with this tech... As long as OVR and/or Valve gets interested in this for the next generation of VR sets, it's a great way to make sure that the consumer needs more and more GPU power even if display panels stall at a certain resolution.

Using two display panels should also be a way to provide an image that looks better than what the display panel resolution limit dictates.

Idea for a game/tech demo: Light field capture for environment, fixed camera type thirdperson game, free to look around as in OTOY/Carmack experiments and an animated toy robot rendered with nvidia's method making depth focusable by splitting the image to two displays. You'd have a toy robot that you control in a captured version of a real life environment, all with the ability to focus your eyes on whatever depth, as if it all was right in front of you for real.

I don't know if the idea has already been implemented or at least mentioned but maybe the black frames in low persistance mode could be used for overbright stuff like fire, particle effects and the sun, using layer compositing, making that bright stuff maybe a little blurry but much brighter than the rest of the frame, taking hdr to another level, kinda like the idea JC had for display panels, but applied only to VR.

These are some really cool ideas. The fun part is that most of these ideas are actually going to come true some time in the future (even if it's a distant future).
I work as a graphic designer. In my spare time I do VR experiments, PC gaming and write for http://www.headphonesunboxed.com about Bluetooth and gaming headphones.

LightHouse tracking on Gear VR, by OTOY.

I can imagine a game, with a light field captured on set on Millenium Falcon, combined with 3D scan models of actual movie props including a lightsaber, a Jedi Training Ball, and R2-D2, looking like the real thing in VR, like being there and holding a lightsaber, and I can imagine having that in 2016, untethered... No cables.

This is the kind of thing I imagined a well funded OVR would be working on.
