Question

Who remembers Magic Eye?

Was just wondering who remembers "magic eye" and was thinking would a similar concept apply to VR, I remember I used to be able to get into the images really quickly when I was younger, literally within seconds for most of them.

Other people who tried could never seem to do it and if they did it would take them much longer!

It got me thinking with everyone seeming to have a different perspective/experience to "presence" weather or not a similar situation is causing the problem?

I think with VR at the stage it's at you do have to be able to let yourself go a bit, as in meaning go with it try and accept the position the experience is putting you in rather than try and fight it or be stubborn and not wanting to believe! Or just expect it to happen.

In an ideal world we would all put the Rift on and instantly be transported to another dimension and without having to even think just automatically believe we are there but with a lot of people this doesn't seem to be the case.

Listening to people go on about kite and lightnings new demo "the station" I've noticed a few people saying the bill boards don't look right? For me they actually look perfect, even the clearest and best 3D images I've seen in VR.

So do you lot think there could even be a sort of art to perceiving "presence" ?

Well Geekmaster taught me how to make them work (without being inverted) on this very forum...

I remember the first time I saw them for sale, they were at the local Saturday market and the bloke who was selling them said exactly the same look into your reflection as they were behind like a Perspex plastic covering.

I just got these few up on the iPhone and as I scrolled through from image to image if I kept the phone in the same position I didn't even have to re-focus definitely a certain way to get into them though.

Yeah, I used to love the Magic Eye books (even though it would take me forever to "see" them). There's not really any point to trying this in VR, since it's already in stereo 3D and you can fake it using stereo textures (like in Kite & Lightning).

I wasn't suggesting to use it in VR, but was saying if there was a link between people who find it difficult to get into the images of (magic eye) and also people who find it hard to feel "presence" it's just I find it really easy to feel "presence" and also it's really easy for me to get into magic eye images.
It's what I was saying in the top message about letting yourself go! With magic eye images I literally get into them within a couple of seconds and if I keep them in a sweet spot I can literally flick through different images while almost keeping the 3D effect going at the same time.
But there is a certain skill to it and it's not just with you eyes it's something you do with your brain at the same time I think there's a link between this and feeling "presence" in VR

The original Magic Carpet game had a sirds mode (single image random dot stereogram) that works just like the magic eye books. So I could play it in 3D without a headset or 3d monitor. :)

There is nothing quite like that first time you see the sailboat in full 3D. It seemed like some kind of scam or joke, and who really cares about some silly picture of a sailboat. Then you see it and mind=blown. :o

I think a few people have had the same experience with the Rift where they just won't let their brain accept the "presence" bit like magic eye you have to let it happen! not try and sub-consciously avoid it from negativity or being too skeptical.

There's nothing "magic" about the Magic Eye. You just need to relax your eyes and focus at a certain distance. I've gotten very good at this from free-viewing 3D images on the internet. Cross-eye seems to be easier, but I was eventually able to do parallel images as well. You can search for 3D videos on YouTube ("yt3d"), they have free-view modes, though it's probably easier to learn with images.

Yeah we know it's not magic it's just the name, but what you're saying about relaxing is right like part of accepting it! I think you have to do the same with "presence" to a certain degree maybe the higher spec the HMD's become, the less effort/acceptance will have to be put in to feel the "presence"?

That's the first time I've actually tried these they're pretty cool! shame you end up seeing 3 of the focus image instead of one but wow considering it's just on a phone and looks as good as any 3d TV

I can do the magic eye thing (diverging) to full screen oculus games or videos to see them in 3d without plugging in the rift. :)
The bulge shader makes it a little harder, but it's doable.
