Question

Will the Rift revitalize Second Life?

Second Life has been in decline for a while now, most of it is devoid of life with empty, eerily pristine and bizarre architecture. Do you think the advent of practical VR (via the Rift) has a change of revitalizing this ancient* space?

Would you return to second life? Or would you rather something new appeared in its place?

Interestingly, I imagine sometime in the future a team of VR archaeologists exploring SL for clues about the beginning of human digital life. That is, assuming we ever migrate our minds to a digital substrate.

Part of the issue with most of the areas besides the server pushing all the data is that a lot of the textures are unoptimized work. And it's mostly by people who while are great at modeling and texturing also have no programming backgrounds. So instead of working with textures that are easy to load, take up little file space and also look nice at the same time. They use textures that are massive, take awhile to load up from the server due to their large sizes but look absolutely fantastic.

Oculus Rift user visits 1920s Berlin in Second Life, read about it and see the videos here:

I think the RIft from what i seen in second life really can be great,

the only problem is Second Life really doesnt have the best hardware optimization and may cause issues with people with older machines. I find i can play most games on high settings fine however have some issues with Second Life and the Rift for a steady framerate when exploring. But who knows, "Maybe" Linden Labs will realise this and figure out a way to make a smoother experence in the offical viewer but i woudnt count on it.

tips for anyone is make sure you have a pretty good computer and a pretty solid internet connection as well. I really have enjoyed it so far and i think it opens up a new "World" for second life, but you do notice some things like how on average the avatars in second life, while some of them can look pretty good on screen, actually are pretty low poly while viewed in the Rift, second life really needs a bump in polygons in charecter models however that may cause more performance issues.

but honestly for now second life is the "best" virtual world out there. even if i personally say the user base is not as friendly and interesting as it used to be years ago. but whatever. this is still way better then 3dxchat!
