4 headset replacements in 4 months

Can anyone let me know if you have had to return your Brand New Meta Quest 3 Headset to Meta because it just stopped working for no reason?  I am literally now on my 4th headset replacement (all refurbished replacements) in 4 months of buying my original!  The last replacement lasted for exactly 4 days before it stopped working.  4 days of use and now it has to be returned again.  I am wondering if I am the only one experiencing this or is it something that is happening to others?

I think the issue is with sweat getting into the sensors of the headset. I use mine primarily for Les Mills Body Combat. Has Meta looked into sweat as the root cause of these types of failures?

Anonymous, Well it was a great theory but, in practice, there were unforeseen issues.  "Air-gapping" the headset with the halo head piece does indeed reduce greatly the amount of sweat getting on it.  And allows for plugging the access holes with silly putty (works great, easy to remove) for any that does.  There is all that peripheral light let in with absence of the facial interface but I think I could get use to that in Supernatural.  However, the halo is not sufficient to support the headset with high activity.  It needs help from the facial interface supporting from your cheekbones.   Without it, the headset quickly slips down onto the bridge of your nose - quite uncomfortable.

pk165271  thanks for the honest and helpful review, the only remaining options are the extractor fan interface mentioned here -

or purchase a cheap interface and drill 10mm to 15mm holes in it to turn it into a swiss cheese open interface without compromising the rigidity of the interface. Admittedly, it's not going to look pretty, but that 's not what VR is about.

I doubt how much the swiss cheese option would help. I have a an interface which allow air circulation. It did well with sweat vapor. Like this

It seems it should be a combination of all solutions, better air circulation and sweat absorption.
for sure the best would be if the headset is produced with certain IP rating level. Little chance we can see this in Quest 3 but Quest 4 maybe?!

Have been through 3x Quest 3's in the past 2 months due to sweat issues. I use a sweat band and amvr wipable face shield and wipe the headset after every round (Thrill of The Fight). Unfortunately all it takes is one drop to loose tracking and essentially brick the device. I'm upgrading to strap posted here where the headset doesn't need to be directly on your face + the amazon face/head band for Q3 ( https://a.co/d/37bcXPR )

I'm glad they're aware of the problem so getting a replacement is pretty seamless (in my experience). Just a PITA to have to do it every other week.

HiighZenBurg  it's not the single drop, it's the sweat vapour that comes off your face and condenses on the electronics.

This is probably the best solution.

    The issue got media’s attentions

    https://mixed-news.com/en/vr-fitness-kills-your-vr-headset-meta-quest-3-has-a-sweat-problem/

It is an annoying issue. Mine was "dead" in summer infinity boot loop, factory reset and sideload did not help. Was about to run rma, but rested days later, for no reason it worked again.

But recently it is happening again. I have requested a RMA as well. Let’s see how this works or it is working again before RMA

Meta should look into the issue seriously 😒

teesnjees CosmicMeerkat5770 Kong777 HiighZenBurg pk165271  MainMan68 this one slipped under the radar. There is now an official quest 3 open interface which will be better than most other solutions to stop sweat vapour killing your headset electronics and still stay on your face.

Thanks for this information - however I feel the immersive experience and environment would be lost with an open interface. Would you agree? One of the reasons I got a VR headset was for the full VR experience.  I think a better option is a fix to the headset to prevent the system from being exposed to vapors. As I mentioned before. Many people use this for vigorous exercise- and it is marketed to be used as such.  A fix to the headset is in order.  Second perhaps a mesh interface like the one for 3S would be another option.

teesnjees  I can understand your desire for complete immersion, which you sadly have to balance against a working headset. Perhaps a darkened room with the open interface or add your own mesh to the open interface using pieces of black tights/stockings/pantyhose.

Meta made a breathable one for the 3S, perhaps they will make it for other models

So my household has a Q2, Q3 & Q3S. The Q2 has been having head tracking issues and after a factory reset today, it did an update and already had the bad version. Now it works good.

So glad to hear that CosmicMeerkat5770  - my issue was moisture in the headset due to working out, so I have a new 3rd party face mask that is breathable and I insure no sweat touches the inside of the headset.  Seems to be working for now!  I think the Q3S was made now for people who workout - as its face mask is breathable.  All the best.

Slight tweak to the cling film mod -

Remove the facial interface and cover the inside of the headset with a sheet of cling film, extending it beyond the edges of the headset.

Get some cheap lens protector rings and apply hot glue to the underside of the rings and push them into place over the lenses, gluing them to the cling film. Let the hot glue set and remove the rings that are now glued to the cling film. Cut around the inside of the rings to remove the cling film inside the rings.

Refit the rings/cling film to the headset and spread the cling film over the edges of the headset.  Refit the facial interface and trim off any surplus cling film sticking out from the outside of the interface.

This effectively seals the face area from the electronics package.

With the refined cling film mod, did it take away any visual fidelity after you wrapped it to the lenses so well?

I saw this post too late because my Quest 3 also malfunctioned due to sweating during exercise.

You are not alone. There are thousands of people affected. Everyone complains about the method company because they do not take any measures.

I am on my third headset since Christmas of 2024 and today is March 18th, 2025.  I have been using supernatural to work out and I do get a pretty significant sweat going.  I used my newest refurbished unit this weekend for the first time 4 days after I got it and in the middle of a workout, the display started spinning and I got a message that the headset lost tracking and was totally locked up.  Set up a return and used my wife's headset yesterday.  This am she went to use it and the same thing happened, so that's our 4th headset failure since the end of last year.  I had purchased a new face piece with air vents and a non-absorbent material (for the first one and used it on subsequent units), but the same issue occurred.  If you can't use the device to get a good workout, what good is a VR for exercise?  There has to be a better solution than putting saran wrap or silly putty over the goggles?  This is super frustrating.

Out of curiosity, which model are you using?
