Meta Quest 3 Won't Fully Charge

Folks:  Several weeks ago, I noticed my Meta Quest 3's "charging" light was orange instead of its usual green.  When I turned it on, it was only 73% charged.  My research into the problem mentioned that Meta had pushed a "buggy" firmware update that was causing the incomplete charging.  I tried all of the "fixes" mentioned in my research, but nothing worked.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, what did you do to resolve it?

Thanks for your help!

    Hi TikkyTac4565 πŸ™‚

My research into the problem mentioned that Meta had pushed a "buggy" firmware update that was causing the incomplete charging.

That update was a year or so ago, I don't think this has anything to do with your current issue.

My Quest 3 charges to 100% without issues.

If you charge your headset while it's in sleep mode, try if it works when you turn it off completly and vice versa.

Don't charge the Quest immediatly after using it, let it cool down first. I normally charge it the next day... but of course, you don't have to wait that long, maybe an hour or so.

Your light will be orange until it's fully charged and normally turns green at around 97%. The buggy update was sometime around June of 2025 and that's no longer an issue. My 3s charges normally, so your problem isn't the old bug. Follow the advice of Choleni and see how it goes.

To Choleni and Maccyb - thanks for your replies.  I've done what you, Choleni, suggested and it didn't work.  Unfortunately, NOTHING I try is working to fix this issue.  I've turned it off completely, used the "Meta-approved" charging cable, done "hard resets," run the thing down to 0% charge and re-charged, done the equivalent of a "factory reset"...NOTHING works!

    <Sigh>

    Any other suggestions?

And, thank you all for reading/responding.

That's a pity, then you might have a faulty battery connection.

Here is a link to talk to a human support person at Meta, they might be able to help in another way, or if you are still in warranty, organise a replacement.

Try the WhatsApp option first and good luck πŸ€žπŸ€žπŸ€žπŸ€πŸ€

I've had the same issue since the 2.5 update (Still present in 2.6)  Quest 3 was fully charged before updating, after updating it was at 72%.     I've tried many of the "fixes" as well and nothing lasts.

It will show are charge of between 66-75% and stop charging (0.4w) but it's fully charged, eventually I've gotten it up to 100% and the charger to turn green only to turn around a couple hours later and find it orange and at 70%ish charge (unit is off an unused so no way it drained in that time)

At this point it's either a software issue or a battery issue, given that the unit is working fine, it was charging fully before the update and battery life doesn't appear to be degraded I am leaning to it being a bug in the software.

LordCorellon Read previous comments on this thread for possible solutions, there's also a link for options to talk to a human support person at Meta if it continues.. You might well have a bug too so report it through the bug reporting tool on your headset. Good luck. Hope it's fixed soon. I'm not sure a software bug would cause the battery to drain while it's not powered on though. Definitely talk to support anyway. Try the WhatsApp link for the quickest reply.

Maccyb123 Thanks, I've run though all the possible solutions with the exception of a factory reset (I'm not at that point yet).   It's not so much that the battery is draining as I believe like with v72 or so it's the calibration that is messing up as the value will change nearly instantly (Like right now where it stopped to charge at 67% but if you unplug it and plug it back in it says 73%).

I tried support but at the time they didn't have any other suggestions then a) charge over night, b) drain and recharge, c) charge with a different charger/cable, d) factory reset.

I've done all but the factory reset so I'm hoping that the bug report will be processed and lead to a fix (Was hoping 2.6 would fix it but it didn't)

I currently am experiencing this issue as well.

I do periodically charge my headset when I know I have not used it in several days, and typically it goes from orange to green pretty quick but this time, it is not holding a charge at all.

Around June 30th or so I noticed 2.6 was installed and decided to check it out. I didnt even check out 2.5 due to time, so this issue could of even happened during 2.5 auto-install.

I noticed my battery was going down a little faster than it should be, did not think much of it. I completely shut it down after 10 minutes or so of use, and it was around 78%. I plugged it in and orange light came on like it should. I came back few hours later and noticed it was still orange. I checked the battery percent and it actually went down to 77%, weird. So I read some threads here and I tried the charging it while in Sleep mode, did not work, so I shut it down completely again. Still not charging. I did the "hold power button down for 30 seconds and let it reboot a few times". Not sure if that even helped. I left it unplugged for a day and plugged it back in and saw the orange light came back on and after maybe 10 minutes or so I saw the orange light went completely off, then it started to blink, never seen that before. Apparently searching could be something with a bad adapter or bad firmware update. So I ordered another AC adapter from Meta (still waiting for it), just to be sure it isn't the adapter. I left it unplugged again and the following day I plugged it back in and it actually charged to 100% with a green light, odd. So I booted up, this time plugged back in my Bobo battery, started using it a few minutes or so, checked Settings and the percent was going down, and usually it stays at full charge when I am using a battery until the battery is depleted, but the unit went back down to around 88%. So again, it is not holding a charge. I waited a few minutes and plugged it back in using the AC adapter, still no charge after checking back after several hours. Left it unplugged for another day, plugged it back in, and it did charge to 100%. I have not turned it back on yet until I get the adapter in the mail.

I don't know what is up, but whatever happened in 2.5 and/or 2.6, I am betting is the reason this charging is not working now. And no, I do not want to hard reset the whole thing and have to go threw the drama of resetting my account back into it. I had to do that 1 time before with a bad update a long time ago and it was not fun - including my phone app just was a pain of re-finding my headset.

You explained everything in very good detail there.. There are so many factors affecting battery life, it's very difficult to pin down exactly what it might be. There is one unfortunate fact of life with lithium batteries and that is as they age they don't hold the same capacity they had when they are new. Coupled with what might be a bug makes it look even worse.. As the behavior of your battery seemed to change after the update, there is a possibility it's a bug, but also the possibility that it's a coincidence and your battery is just depleting faster. First thing you should do is report the battery drain as a possible bug through the bug reporting tool on your headset as you never know,, that's what it might be. We have to remember the hard work a headset battery does. The 4500mah battery on my mobile phone lasts a day and a half, the similar size battery in the Quest lasts 2 hours when new, if you're lucky. So, the lifespan will be a lot less. It's good you have your Bobo as over time, your headset will be relying on it more and more. But that's in the future hopefully and you just have a bug! Good luck with it! πŸ€πŸ€πŸ€žπŸ€ž

i've been having the same problem for over a year now.   my quest 3 worked fiine. it would last 3 or 4 hours and only be down to 70% (i use it for iracing with the link cable to my pc).  then one day out of the blue it stopped charging while playing.  i've tried every "fix" there is.  i can get it to fully charge when i do a factory reset but as soon as i set it up and it connects the internet, it automatically updates and the issue returns.  some days it will fully charge and i can use it no problem, and then some days it won't charge past 74-76%.  i only use the offical meta cables for charging.  it is a software/firmware issue that meta seems to not care about fixing.  i regret buying the quest 3. i should have bought the PSVR2.  owned the meta 3 for almost 2 years and there is no way i can get a refund or a replacement (i wouldn't even want one).  all in all meta is a ripoff.

I saw this same post word for word from someone else a couple of weeks ago. I noticed that you joined the community 6 hours ago and posted this immediately. You cut and pasted this from another user or you set up a new account. You are obviously trolling the forum. Stop.

Are you a Meta employee, or are you getting paid by them? Why do you defend them so hard? It seems like you're the one trolling by telling people to contact Meta when you know they don't help. They just tell you to factory reset or leave your headset plugged in all night, which doesn't work.

You are accusing HoosierDaddyJoe of being a troll just because he joined 6 hours ago? I literally joined an hour ago because I have the exact same problem. I've had a Quest 3 since it was released. I exchanged my 128GB model, which I had for two years without this issue, for a 512GB upgrade. The new unit had the same problem, so I exchanged it for another, and it has the same issue.

This isn't a 'faulty battery connection' or a single defective unit. It is clearly a widespread Meta software/firmware problem. By accusing HoosierDaddyJoe of trolling, you are dismissing a genuine issue that many of us are facing. Joining the forum recently doesn't mean the problem isn't real

Same problem i tried 2 diffrent chargers and my headset sits at 75% sometimes it goes past 80% then bam back to 70% someone said it might be the proximity sensor n the middle mine is actually scratched and apperently that things on 24/7? even if you have the headset completly off while charging anyways i turned off everything and even turned on batterys saving mode cause i have also noticed it goes from 100% to 76% pretty fast even when connected to a battery pack but makes sense it would throttle accept when i first got it it wouldnt go down at all and now if its connected it just stays at 75%. Im trying to check the health of the battery but the app needs it at 100% which it cant do. At this point its either the battery degraded or theres a bug..

Same here, it is not charging above 74% since the last update. I've tried different adapters, rebooting, etc

It’s 100% meta’s buggy software update it’s not coincidence that thousands of people have the same problem and we all mention the same battery percentage 73% max and seems to stop at 63/64% meta support refuse to acknowledge it exists and simply advise you to buy a new headset 🫑

Most likely you're using a third-party charger which is not fully PD protocol compliant πŸ˜‰. What you (and others) are describing, is the charger dropping to 5v/max 3A charging speed (due to not handshaking at 9v/2A), which will cause the charging curve to drop off significantly at about 70% battery, by design. After about 70%, the headset draws more power than the charger can provide. This can be due to using a cheap/non-compliant or faulty charger, but ALSO can be due to using a cheap/non-compliant or faulty USB cable. It can ALSO depend on the temperature of the headset/battery.

    thousands of people

    LOL, sure πŸ€ͺ.

Mine won't charge above 75% either. I haven't used it for a few weeks, gone  to fire up the new DLC for ATS, and my battery will not charge fully. The device shows that an update was installed recently, this is the only thing to have changed.

Same since the 2.7 software update this happened I know so many people facing the the same issue, you talk to meta support about it and they don’t seem interested and tell you to buy a new headset
