New Oculus account setup error OVR88948175

We run a VR lab at the University with 19 Oculus Rift and 4 HTC Vive stations, open to all faculty, staff, and students.  We require each user to sign into Windows with their own University account, and to create their own Oculus account.  Beginning in mid February, new Oculus users have hit a brick wall in their Oculus setup, with Oculus error OVR88948175.

Oculus is evidently trying to download something to "C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software", which requires admin privileges -- even though the Oculus software is already fully installed on the machine.  If a user clicks the "Change Location" button and navigates into their own folder space, it has no effect:

The pathname in the dialog doesn't change -- which is an obvious bug -- and there's no way past this error.  We've been discussing this with Oculus support, but their bottom line is:  "we aren't able to provide much support for this situation, since we recommend using an admin account with the software."  As my colleague put it to them, succinctly: "if the Oculus software only works for admins, it does not work for us."  We are not going to provide admin accounts to everyone on campus.

We have been using Oculus hardware and software since the DK1.  We've incorporated Oculus into our in-house VR software.  Our lab is a seed for VR on this campus, and departments across campus are looking to us for experience and advice in setting up their own labs.  Investment is set to grow exponentially.  This was never a problem until a few weeks ago, evidently related to some recent Oculus software update.  It affects only new users.  Old users already set up with non-admin accounts continue to work.

Unless we can find a way past this roadblock, we can no longer recommend Oculus for a large-scale University investment in VR.  There are many alternatives ...

Has anybody else hit this error?  Any known work-arounds?  Are we the only ones attempting to operate such a facility?

I'd like to say, the above works:
REG ADD "HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Oculus VR, LLC\Oculus\Libraries"

BUT - you have to understand the caveats -- as it did NOT work for me, just running it from a command prompt.  The command above puts the info needed into the DEFAULT reg key.  When a user logs in for the first time, they'll get a copy, and it will work.  But, if you have logged in already -- then you need to add it to HKCU instead:

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Oculus VR, LLC\Oculus\Libraries"

So, on new machines/builds, consider the HKU option above.  For current users, do the HKCU line.  Should fix -- worked for me.

im having the same isssue. Ovr88948172 error. i have been speaking with the oculus team for a while and there seems to be no solution to this problem. I have followed all the steps and have more than enough space and the problem still exists. I've even completely uninstalled the app and reinstalled5 times with the same result. At this point it has to be the software itself. There should be no reason why this still is happening. If this continues i won't be able to get an oculus. The product may be good but what's the point if new people are having this issue? Anyone still having this issue?

Had the same problem with a setup in our VR lab. Though it was only appearing on an admin account. Regular student accounts worked with no problems at all. Adding the registry entry fixed it for me, though id say this is kinda unacceptable for a company of this size. Especially when i see, that this thread startet in 2019 and its still not fixed.

Found an answer an another site that seems to help.

the username (and folder name)  can not have any space in it.

Example:

"User Name" is with space and "UserName" without, just wanted to clarify that if anyone calls it something else then space.

Also if you try specifying the drive letter:

C:\Users\(Username)\Downloads\OculusSetup.exe /drive=D

for drive D for example it should want to install itself to D:\Oculus (which then would be outside the program files directory).

Otherwise the other solution (a way to solve the problem when there is a space in the username) check an earlier post:

We have an Active Directory guest account that I tried using with Oculus and was getting the error as everyone else.  I added the registry hack to the hku\.default location and deleted this guest account's Windows profile.  Tried running Oculus and got the error again.  I then went and tried a repair of Oculus and then it worked.  What a pain.....

I am also having this issue in a multiuser lab environment, what pain. Anyone find a fix? The Regedit is not working, I am still getting the same error.

The fix is pretty easy. Open regedit (just open the start menu and type it).

Then you need to manually build this "folder structure":

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Oculus VR, LLC\Oculus\Libraries\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER and Software is already there. So, Just copy "Oculus VR, LLC", right click on Software then New -> Key -> paste the name.

Like this just add the "Oculus" and "Libraries" keys/folders in the hierarchy and the setup should continue without error.

I manage a university's multi-user computer lab (Active Directory), and though the registry hack used to work before to solve the dreaded OVR88948175 error. even since the migration to Meta Horizon Accounts in January, which required an update to the Oculus app, the OVR88948175 error has returned and now the registry hack no longer works.

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, changing the install location, and of course, the registry hack, but nothing is working to solve the dreaded OVR88948175 error.

We own a dozen Oculus devices that are now completely unusable with the Oculus app, and it has horribly derailed our coursework.

Please fix!

We haven't seen this problem for quite a while.  I don't know whether the change from Oculus to Meta has changed or added any keys, but we have had Oculus accounts converted to Meta accounts as well as new Meta accounts without issues.

We're still running Windows 10; we have not tried Windows 11; maybe that's an issue.

I'm now searching my REGEDIT keys for all occurrences of "Oculus".  If any of these are missing on your machine, we can dive into the parameter values.  (I also searched for "Meta" but there are too many irrelevant matches for that.  There are no matches for "Meta LLC" or "Meta, LLC".)

I searched through old e-mail and found this -- maybe relevant:

   * * *

2022-08-24:

Oculus has switched to supporting Meta accounts as of yesterday, and this appears to have rendered the current version of the Oculus software unusable - users cannot log in to use the software. Ted has tested manually installing the latest Oculus software on the instructor station, and this appears to correct the login issues we are experiencing. For the Fall 2022 loadset we will need the latest Oculus software (version 42.0.0.136.285 or higher) deployed:

https://www.oculus.com/rift/setup/

Download the latest client using the white button *not* the patch mentioned and linked below it - we have tried using the patch and it did not correct the problem.

The version that comes from https://www.oculus.com/rift/setup/ is 43.0.0.192.173 [as of 2022-08-24]

My current version is now 47.0.0.286.341

Wrong error for this thread; wrong solution for your error.  The OVR88948175 would have prevented you from even setting up your Meta/Oculus account or launching any Oculus application.  The REGEDIT work-around for that error is irrelevant to your problem.  Rather than answering here (and taking this thread off on a tangent), it would be best if you either found a more appropriate thread or started a new one.

[Note the error codes you're seeing: OAF ERRORs 1971039, 1971052; OVR6139226.  Not OVR88948175]

THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION - MARKING FOR VISABILITY

Hey guys! This thread seems to be pretty old with not a lot of recent activity, plus the information seems to be outdated. I'm going to be locking this thread so that users who may be having this same issue can create new threads instead. Be sure to provide as much information as you can about the issue you're experiencing. This way, support and other users may be able to help you find a solution!
