Quest 3 Backlight Flickering When Charging Off with Original Charger - Persistent Bug Since v74

The latest Quest 3 system has a backlight flickering issue when charging with the original charger while the device is powered off. This issue was first reported on forums after the v74 system update. After investigation, it was found that first, the issue does not occur when using non-original chargers. Second, the flickering frequency decreases as the battery level increases: it flickers about every 30 seconds when the battery is around 20-40%, increases to about every minute when the battery is 60-70%, and most likely stops completely when the battery is above 90%.

It is preliminarily judged that this issue may be a system-level bug where the charging protocol negotiation with the original charger accidentally triggers the screen backlight controller. The temporary solution provided by customer service is to charge the device in sleep mode by short-pressing the power button, which has been tested and indeed no longer causes the issue. They explained that the system has more stable backlight control in sleep mode.

However, after my inquiries and searches across the internet, very few people have reported this issue. Is this a hardware batch difference problem? Secondly, I hope that official personnel will pay attention to this issue and fix this system problem as soon as possible.

It'll change to approved after some time.....it's for everyone the same, you can only see this on your own posts, but not on others.πŸ˜‰

Hi Jin12161 πŸ™‚

Please report the bug directly through the headset.

Posting it here will make the problem visible to other users - which is good btw. - but not to the devs.

Sorry, I didn't know that no engineers or developers here could see this issue

It's a user forum..... it might be possible, that a Meta engineer see your post, but they're not monitoring all, so the bug report is more reliable to let let them know about an issue.

Best is.... bug report and posting hereπŸ™ƒ

I have the exact same issue, did you get any feedback or a fix that actually works? I rarely go past 73% and have this flickering happening. I might have gone up to 100% 3 times in the past 2 weeks only. I just hope it does not affect the battery life? Is there anything that can be done or a fix in the works by Meta?

(I used help from AI because I'm too lazy to type out long technical explanations.)

TLDR: try unplugging your charger. Fully power off the headset using the Power Menu (don't just put it to sleep). Leave the powered-off headset resting (without charging) for at least a full 30 minutes to let it cool down (nb. some users say 3 hours is necessary). Plug the charger back in and leave the headset charging (still powered off) for as long as it takes to get the green light back on.

Note: if you are still having charging problems, it probably means the USB port, cable or charger has developed a fault OR the charger and/or cable are not fully PD compliant or do not support the 9v or 12v PD charging profiles that the headset requires.

If you are using the stock charger, it could indicate that your charger has become faulty and falls back to a safer charging profile, or you are using a bad cable, or your USB port is dirty, corroded or faulty. Or it could simply be a PD handshaking /throttling /overheating issue such as described earlier.
