Question

Quest 3 beeping constantly when the charge on my Elite Strap with Battery runs out?

As in the title, when it still has around 100% charge left on its own battery, my Quest 3 keeps giving intermittent notifications, presumably because the charge on my ES with B's charge has run down to 0%.

I've tried disabling the notifications I can find in the Quest 3 settings, but the only way I've found of shutting it up, so far, is to physically disconnect the headstrap from it.   This can't be the best way to do it, surely?

Cheers in advance for any help.

Not quite a "Eureka!!! moment", yet at least, as I'll still need to fully check that Virtual Desktop still works, but disabling the Link setting, on the Quest 3,  appears to have silenced the unwanted "notification".

Before disabling Link, my PCVR apps were still causing the beep(s), but when I tried an on-headset app, there wasn't a sound, when the ES/B charge crossed 0%.

Quite why there is an apparent connection between the Link setting and VD or how/why my Link setting became enabled, I don't know?  Maybe it was always enabled and recent changes to the Link software or VD have caused this apparent conflict?

Well, having taken a break from VR gaming for a while, with Cyberpunk 2077 distracting me, I've now returned and it would appear that the beeps are still occurring when the ESB runs out of charge.  I've disabled every notification in the headset settings and it still does it, despite now being up to V83.

Link is disabled still, so I guess my previous "solution" wasn't and it looks like I'll either have to just reopen my original ticket again or open another.  Given the previous help I've had has not solved the problem, I'm guessing that it's probably an issue with the headset, but I guess I'll wait and see if the support team has any more productive suggestions.

Hey Greyman

Thanks for flagging this issue - must be frustrating that this problem is still persisting. We'll get to the bottom of it sure enough!

Sounds like it could be an issue with the headset itself rather than the Elite Strap. For the team to get to the bottom of this, you can fill out a bug report. You can do this on your headset directly by following these steps:

  1. Press the Meta button or Oculus button on your right Touch controller to open the universal menu.
  2. Select the clock on the left-hand side of the universal menu to open Quick settings.
  3. Select the Report problem button.
  4. Select Include or Don't include to add complete logs and diagnostics.
  5. Follow the instructions to submit your report.

You are also very welcome to reopen your previous tickets by responding to the email chain from a few months ago. We'll be very happy to help you out over that channel too!

Hope this helps and looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Hello and thanks for your message.

I am currently involved in a rather circular conversation with a selection of your colleagues at Meta Support, who are trying to convince me that this is an intended behaviour, that started to be introduced with V68.

Apparently, "This notification helps you manage your power supply more effectively by letting you know when the external battery reaches a low power threshold".

This does appear to be very odd, as why would I bother to buy an ESB, for example, when half way through my newly extended sessions, I get a notification that tells me what?  To recharge my ESB?

This would also appear to be particularly odd, given that release V68 has only a mention of a warning being issued when the main headset battery runs low and, perhaps more importantly, it should only issue that warning when the headset is taken off.  Not that full release notes are provided for all of the subsequent releases, but the notes that are there make no mention of anything to do with external batteries running out of charge.

As you might be able to tell from the above, I have serious doubts as to whether this is intended behaviour, but if it is, I have to say that it has to be a very poorly thought out and/or implemented "improvement".

Finally, surely if this had been applied to every Quest 3 user, there'd be more people complaining about it?

Oh and I've now just had a reply that says that presumably the devs have said that they deliberately implemented this change and cannot undo it.   "cannot undo" apparently being a euphemism for "don't want to undo" or "don't want to change it in any way" and being somewhat difficult to believe.   Even if it is an intended notification, why wouldn't they provide a way, like all other notifications, to disable it and why would "do not disturb" not silence it?

If feels like I am being spun a bit of a yarn.

Well, I am now being asked to submit a bug report, as the engineers appear to be happy that this feature is working as intended.

I'll be putting in a bug report, but I'd really love to understand the rationale behind a design decision that appears to undermine the main reason that a customer would buy an ESB.  For me at least, that reason was to add another 2 hours or so of immersive playtime, without any battery-level interruption.  This notification can definitely be considered as an interruption, especially as there doesn't appear to be an option to silence it.

I'd also like to hear from Quest 3 owners who have another brand of headstrap, with battery, to establish whether it is just the Meta ESB that is suffering from this notification?

Hi Greyman πŸ™‚

I have the Bobovr headstrap with battery. It gives me one sound notifaction to let me know the headstrap batterie is empty and the internal Quest battery will be used now.

The sound isn't loud and only once - sometimes while playing I didn't even notice it.

I don't find it bothersome, and the little peep gives me the option of simply changing the battery...... I have two of themπŸ˜ƒ
