Question

Screen tearing lines after v2.1 on quest2 and 3s

Specific Symptoms & Conditions

Only Affects UI/Overlays: The tearing and artifacts only appear on the Quest UI, menus, overlays, and video streaming layers (such as Virtual Desktop or screens with white backgrounds).

3D Environments are Unaffected: Full 3D environments, background environments, and in-game visuals work perfectly fine, as long as no system overlay is present.

Tied to Head Tracking: The visual tearing is triggered by head movement. It appears as horizontal lines when moving the head up and down, and vertical lines when moving the head left and right.

Affected Devices & Firmware

Hardware: The issue is widespread and not isolated to one headset. Users have confirmed this is happening on the Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S.

Software: Multiple users pinpointed that the issue began very recently, specifically after the Horizon 2.1 update.

Troubleshooting Attempted (No Fix Found)

Users have attempted standard fixes, including factory resets and using the Meta Quest Update Tool, but the issue persists.

Hardware defect ruled out: While one user suggested it could be a loose display cable, the community consensus strongly confirms this is a software/firmware issue. A broken display cable would cause persistent visual glitches across all games and apps, whereas this issue dynamically turns on and off depending strictly on whether a UI overlay is present.

I tossed my Quest 2 in the trash. I'm waiting for the Steam Frame to drop.

@GlowingEagle8735 Good luck with it. It seems like it will come out this year but it might be near the end of 2026 so a nice Christmas present if supplies aren't limited by the components shortage. Looks like it will affect the price too, might be closer to $1,000 than $500, but you've plenty of time to save the money. Why didn't you sell your Quest? It's working fine on standalone games. Even repairers could buy it for spare parts. Fingers crossed for you! 🤞🤞☘️☘️

This is driving me insane!

I too have this same problem when playing movies in 4XVR in my stand alone Quest 2 or 3 headset. Bought this app a month ago for $30 and haven't enjoyed a single freaking movie after the march v2.1 update.

These weird flickering horizontal or vertical lines ONLY happens in all theater environment in overlay menu, or on the screen playing the movie when I move my head left or right, up or down. It is most noticeable in white background. Did multiple factory reset on both headsets and same problem.

Before the v2.1 update, my 4XVR movies were playing perfect! Thought my headset was dying out untill I came across this thread! Can somebody please help us with this problem?

I'm having this problem as well on my Quest 2, though the tears are only a few pixels.

Mostly noticable in Virtual Desktop.

I've also noticed a more pronounced edge cutoff on the outer left and right periphery of my view that I never had seen before.

Yes, more and more users are experiencing this anoying anomaly all over the world because of v2.1.  Although it's in its testing stage, v2.3 official update should be rolling out soon so cross your fingers if it fixes it. Just wish Meta would stop being lazy and respond to our comments!

Hi everyone and Meta developers. I am having the exact same issue on my Quest 3S after updating to v2.5. I see horizontal green lines strictly on the edges of UI windows in Horizon Home, and the headset constantly says Searching for room space.

The lines and tracking errors ONLY appear on UI layers within Horizon Home and completely DISAPPEAR during Passthrough mode and inside VR games. Internal screenshots do not capture these lines. Meta Store Support Ticket confirmed this is a 100 percent software firmware conflict rather than a hardware malfunction. Please release a software hotfix for this UI tracking conflict as soon as possible. Thank you.

I also noticed another important technical detail: the green lines appear only when I look to the right side of the Horizon Home environment. When I turn my head and look to the left, the lines completely disappear. This clearly points to an issue with dynamic foveated rendering or asynchronous time warp/spacewarp layers in the latest update.
