Question

Thoughts on 128GB vs 512GB for Quest 3?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the whole Oculus/Meta Quest as I've only ever owned wired VR headsets to the PC

I was wondering if you guys will be getting the 128GB or the 512GB model, and which would you recommend? I noticed the 512GB model also comes with 6 months subscription of the Meta Game Library, is that game library worth it?

Thank you for your help!

Personally I have a 512GB model on order. Is it absolutely necessary? probably not but... with the increased capabilities of Quest3 I'm expecting games to become bigger (using higher resolution textures for example, which will take up more room). You can make do with 128GB but depending on what you play you might find that you have to delete a game in order to make room to install another. I'm thinking that the new flagship titles like Assassin's Creed VR and Asgard's Wrath2 are likely to be pretty big.

For reference, I've copied below a list of older titles with 'estimated file sizes' (from https://arvrtips.com/64-vs-256-gb-oculus-quest/)

The big issue is that most games on the Meta platform don't have cloud saves - unlike Steam games for example. So if you have to uninstall a game then you'll lose your progress or save slots. (Edited) Thanks to nalex66 for confirming that this is no longer the case.

Re. the Meta Quest+ subscription, I'd say that it's probably more worth it for someone who's new to VR and doesn't already have a library. And for those who have a lot of time to play games and are continually looking for new experiences. I can't see it being of much value to me personally since I already own the titles I really wanted to play. I also don't have a great deal of time to play games! I don't expect newer titles being included but I'm looking forward to being proved wrong 😁 I also don't like the fact that you only keep the titles while you continue to pay for the subscription. I'm a bit of a hoarder and although I don't often replay a game, I'd rather I kept those games in my library even if I choose not to continue the sub, which sadly isn't the case.

Blinding line up of info, thanks B, seems like 128gb is good enough for me!  roll on Sunday when it arrives!

Same, 512GB for exactly the same reason.

TBH, if they'd released a 256GB model, I probably would have opted for that. It's taken me a long time to nearly fill up my Quest 2's 256GB storage and I don't anticipate individual Quest 3 apps being that much larger, in general.

I went for the 512 too. I wonder how many interactive objects there’s going to be for your MR space in the future, together with the games and the mapped spaces themselves. If there’s a movie player for your space, and you want to store a small library of movies (rather than stream them), they add up real quick.

I went for the 512 as well, but that’s me—I always go for the larger storage option, because I like to keep all my stuff installed.

I’m looking forward to trying Meta Quest +. You don’t get access to a whole existing library, but rather, every months two games are made available, and you can get those and keep them as long as you have the subscription. So, you will build up a library as long as you claim the offered games, but you don’t get the ones that were offered previously. It seems like a decent way to try stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily buy, and frankly, I buy a lot of stuff to try, and don’t play a lot of games for more than a few hours, so a subscription model might cost me less. I’ll see how I feel about it after the free six months.

One correction on what baroquedub said though; Meta does now have cloud saves. It was introduced last year, and pretty well all games use them (devs have to opt out in order to not use them). The system doesn’t always work perfectly, and I don’t think it tells you anywhere in the Quest menus whether a game has saved to the cloud, but you can check on your Meta account web page to see the last cloud save date for all your apps.

nalex66 That's so useful to know about Cloud saves! Thank you. I never noticed that Cloud backups page. 😁

Lol yeah right. Never thought I would be back, however Quest 3 has really perked my interest for stand alone only. I have an Aero for all my PC-VR so I will only be doing stand alone with Quest 3. Looking forward to Asgard's Wrath 2. I think I am now ready to enjoy some stand alone action. Long as it is mild lol.

I also ordered the Elite Strap/Battery Pack. It says expect headset delivery on Oct 12th, the strap/battery delivery is yet to be determined.

Yeah only doing stand alone is reason I went for 512Gb model. I want to be able to store as many games as I can on it if needed. Did not want to quickly run out of space. If I were mainly going to use it for PC-VR then yes I would have gotten the 128Gb model.

The only reason I don't have an elite type strap for my Quests is because I sometimes use them for movie vueing and browsing away from home, and they can be a bit awkward leaning back on the couch or bed. If the elite straps easily swap with the standard strap, I may get one.

Personally I'll carry on using the Quest Pro for PCVR but i'm guessing a lot of people will use the Q3 for both.

Anyway, yeah, I agree, if the stand-alone games and MR apps are good, I don't think 128 will be enough over the life of the headset if you like to keep things installed.

A local backup option to your PC might start to be a good idea soon. I don't like the idea of re-downloading half a terabyte from the cloud if things go pear shaped.

Personally, I got the 128 version, and have had it for about a month and I still have more gigabytes than what I had on my brand new phone. And, unless you’re rich or you download literally every free game on the store, you probably won’t need any More gigabytes. And it’s $150 cheaper…

After struggling with the 64GB quest 2 for over a year, I went with the  512. I agree that 256 seems like it would be OK, but with games getting larger and containing more graphics content for the quest 3, 128 just seems too close to 64. I had got to the point on the Quest2 where I just stopped buying games because I was tired of playing app musical chairs with the headset. Plus although I don't expect a huge increase over time, I certainly don't expect the OS to get any smaller. It seems these kind of things only go up in size.

Asgard's Wrath 2 is 31gb and about 20gb for the OS so you cant squeeze many AAAs on the 128gb.  I regret buying the 128gb.
