Question

V78.1028 failed to install on Quest 3s

V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?

And it's yet another, same for me too (on a Quest 3).

Yes, should definitely make a bug report.🐛👍🏻

Same issue. Failing to install v78.1028. I tried to push the update manually, connecting the headset to my PC. Fully downloaded and installed the update, or so it said because the problem remained even after a the maual update completed. I am also now experiencing very slow battery charging.

Ok, haven't noticed slow battery charging but I haven't used it so much. I must check that. 👍🏻

This is something I noticed as well.  Before the update to Android 14, the Quest 3 would stay at 100% for four and a half hours on a 30W, 20Ah Anker battery with a Anker USB hub, and Vive face tracker (I used VirtualHere USB server for that).  Now, it starts dropping as soon as its turned on, and is usually at 70% after an hour.

Previously, the Quest 3 would charge at 18-20W, now, with Android 14 it will only charge at 11W with that setup, and directly plugged in to a charger, it charges around 13.5W when in a game (like VRChat)

Also, I've been testing this today, and this is what I came up with:
When at idle in the Quest home environment, it charges at 7W (with the USB hub and face tracker), with the display on.  When the display turns off, it drops to about 4-5W.
When starting VirtualDesktop, it stopped charging
When running VRChat, it wasn't charging until the battery got to 95%, then it ramped to 5W
At approximately 85% battery after 30 minutes, it ramps up to around 11W and stays there for the rest of the session. (with the USB hub and face tracker)
It got to 68% after an hour
It got to 54% after two hours.

Also, when charging the Quest 3 when its off, it only charges at about 11W (I let the battery get down to 15%)

I think I just discovered something.  Now that the battery is at 75%, it stopped charging (orange light is on, and you can wake the screen to see battery percent, but the USB-C power tester is showing 9V at 0W).  This is the same behavior in Android 13+ phones with the battery optimizer that stops charging your battery at 75/80% until it estimates you'll be likely to use your phone in the next hour where it starts charging again.

Ya, same problem with my +1.5yo Q3/512Gb today.  Tried/downloaded 3x and still won’t actually update.  I filed a bug report and suggest you all do the same.

In the meantime 78.1027 is working fine.

Yes, good that you reported it. Better to stop trying and switch off auto update, it might cause more problems by continuously trying to auto install. Thanks for the message.

Yes, make a bug report and switch off auto update until they fix it. 👍🏻

I'm also getting a glitch when I get it to work where it says that it can't finding the positioning in my room and/or that I don't have tracking. And that's a complete lie because I always play with my light on.

I'm going to return my headset, haven't had it that long and its a nightmare

Awful interface, pin only 2 extra programs outside of Meta's stuff, updates every week hoping for the new navigator so I can organize the UI like I can with any basic operating system -- AND NOW STUCK on V78.1028.

Also, tried different fixes nothing works, I can't waste any more of my life here resetting this dumb thing to factory default. I don't understand why more YouTubers aren't complaining about how horrible the UI is ???? And these idiotic updates that only make the headset worse!

Meta -- get it together, or lots of people like me are going to return their headsets!

Well, of course the UI is changing, though it's happening very slowly. It still works normally for most people except the update won't install. I've been a user for only 3 months and it's it's been a great experience overall. Factory reset isn't necessary with this update, it just doesn't install. General advice, stay away from the public test updates and only do official ones, although it's not totally foolproof, it's safer. I wouldn't give up just yet, but try to chill when it's not going perfectly. But if it stresses you out, no point in suffering either.

Same problem as mentioned below for me as well.

Yeah . I'd stop trying to update it now, switch off auto update, at least until a new version arrives.......and then wait to see there are no problems with it before installing ! If you can send a bug report to Meta too.

Same issue with Quest v3. v78.1028 appears available, downloads (it is only just over 100megs, which is weird). Download finishes and says restart to apply. Click on it, restarts. Logo spins, goes blank, comes back spin again, boots up, config screen shows v78.1028 as current version, but also shows same update is available and it starts downloading again.
How can they mess up? I should be glad they didn't brick it.

My thoughts exactly. I was worrying about it bricking too.

Seems like it's affecting an awful lot of people. Make a bug report if you can.🐛👍🏻
