White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Has Oculus support stopped responding to any of you as well? I've been exchanging emails for three months. Last they requested serial numbers to check if they can refund the headset and cable. That was over three weeks ago.

Once I have the time and energy to do so, I will be posting the emails on every social media platform I know. Oculus handling of these issues is absolutely disgusting.

I was told it was a Codemasters issue(DiRT Rally 2.0) and then they stopped responding.

Wow, seriously? They stopped responding after that? Let's see if we can find a phone number to Oculus. I know they don't want to make it public but they've got to have phones...

I am having similiar issue - only started happening after I upgraded to the 3080ti oddly. And it only happens when connected with oculus link and I got into Bigscreen Vr and go into one of the dark movie theatre environments- bottom 20 percent of my viewing area slowly goes from a faint white to a bright white and sometimes even pinkish. Did like two hours of troubleshooting with oculus but no fix so they are having me RMA it. Will see if new one makes any difference at all. Doesnt do it at all when not using the link cable. I tried using a usbc to usb3 adapter but no difference. Reinstalled oculus app, reset headset to factory default, changed all resolution settings to default, etc etc. very frustrating.

Another headset won't make any difference. Been there.

I agree and told them as much - but as many of you have found they are out of ideas and only option they are giving me is RMA at this point

Hmmm, curious. I also have recently changed my monitor to a 32:9 Samsung G9 and I'm using HDR in windows all the time.. Any of you guys using HDR or a monitor that might be pushing Displayport 1.4 with DSC to the limits?

I am not using HDR but using a 4k monitor with hdmi. I will say it may just be coincidence but no issues for me until I switched my gpu- dont have have my old gpu anymore to trade em back to test unfortunately

It seems like almost everyone having this issue is on a 30-series right?

[EDIT: as responded to underneath by FourGoblin, the issue is not isolated to 30 series cards, so this concern can be ignored]

Ive started getting this on Dirt Rally 2.0, like everyone else its now just unplayable.

Never had any issue like this on my old machine that had a 1060 in it.

I had played quite a few other VR games (boneworks, outward + more) either from oculus or steamvr on my current PC (which has a 3070) in the last few months and never had a single issue. I would have been playing well after V23/V24 was current, so like others have said it seems like this has just popped up randomly out of nowhere, and at least for me only once I started playing Dirt Rally 2.0.

Also believe SpOuny is onto something with Dirt Rally 2 in regards to the white stripe not showing up until there is a switch between 2d and VR mode (as in the menu popping up between races). This has also been my experience.

I want to shoutout SpOuny as well for all the troubleshooting he has done in the last 6 months and the amount he has contributed to this thread. Your a legend mate

I still have the issue with a 2080 super so it’s not isolated to just 30 series cards

Thank you for the compliments, I just try to give some info on what I have noticed, once by the greatest of luck someone from Oculus sees the topic and decides it is time to do something...

I am 100% sure that this problem happened to me with the V24, and that with the V23 this problem did not exist, I was able to try it when the V24 was in beta and the V23 the "normal" version ".
With the RTX 3090 I played for 2 months without ever having the problem once, the problem happened with the Oculus link V24, not with the 3090.
Also, I am 100% sure that the problem appears when switching 2D => VR or VR => 2D.
We don't necessarily realize it every time, because at the beginning the stripe is very translucent, so it's almost invisible, then it becomes more and more opaque (and also with somthing looking like compression artefacts).
So as not to have the problem when I do "important" times for esport championships, as soon as the display changes to the interior view of the vehicle before the start, I look closely at the bottom of the screen.
If I see the translucent stripe, I pause the game and close Oculus Link, then restart it (I have to reset the headset view almost every time after that).
Back in interior view, I look again carefully and I repeat the same manipulation as many times as necessary (1 time is usually enough).
When I don't have the stripe before pulling the handbrake and therefore starting the countdown before departure, I can start the run being certain that it will not appear during the run.
I made hundreds of runs like that, it never appeared once during a run.
During trainings, I pay less attention and it has happened that the stripe becomes visible a few seconds after the start, but it did appear before the start at the time of the switch 2D => VR.
If Oculus doesn't want to bother finding a fix, I will just at least want to be able to use older versions of Oculus link, I know V23 will solve my problem, I don't need more.
Unfortunately I think that this would not solve the problem for all, because whoever posted the first message of this topic, did it at a date before V24.
In fact it is the only thing that I don't understand considering what I have noticed during these 6 months of struggle trying to get rid of this problem.

So here's the kicker.

I have done the following :
Re-installed windows 10 completely

Tried 5 of the previous and most present Nvidia drivers ( Using an RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio )
Turned off every overclock, RAM,CPU and GPU
Tried the official and non Official link cable

Tried EVERY USB PORT on my MSI Z390 LGA1151 Mobo

and LAST but not LEAST i got a COMPLETE headset replacement from Oculus literally last week. On this BRAND NEW headset the issue of the bottom 1/4 of the screen goes whitish with artifacting.

I can't stress this enough on how much i COMPLETELY loath this issue and to see SO many other people with the issue tells me there's something up with either the Quest 2 firmware and or the Oculus Link app via the Oculus desktop application. This issue only started happening once the V.28 ( whatever one gave us 120hz support ) caused this to start happening.

I am at a loss, i got literally everything i could do done and as far as a complete replacement yet this issue STILL happens.

Sadly it's made even worse by this disgusting piece of **bleep** company ignoring customers with these issues. My suggestion is to expose them everywhere you can on every social media platform out there.
