White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

So, I have talked to one youtuber who actually recommended Quest 2 for me - he said he never had this issue. So it is not like everyone has it, obviously we are a small part of the affected audience.

I have exact same problem on V30. It happened after I moved my GPU to another PCIe slot.
And this started to happen not only in games, but also in a start room. I also noticed FPS drop after I saw this stripe.

Also I noticed that this stripe has sort of smoke animation, you can barely see this in the begging.

i got a return from oculus support team with following :

Thanks for reaching out to Oculus Support. I appreciate you for sending a video to fully clarify your concern. I understand that you are experiencing display issues with your Quest 2 while connecting it to PC using an Oculus link. Don't worry, I would be happy to look into this for you.

If you have not tried so already, please reboot your headset. If that has no effect on the issue, then please perform a factory reset. Please click here for instructions on how to factory reset the Oculus Quest.

  • Make sure that your Oculus Quest is fully charged when you perform the factory reset.
  • The factory reset will remove all data. Your apps from the Oculus Store can be downloaded again afterwards. However, if you have transferred any personal files from your computer to your headset, they will be permanently removed.
  • If you would like to backup any personal files from your Oculus Quest before the factory reset, please click here for instructions on how to transfer files to and from your Oculus Quest and your computer.

Once the factory reset is complete, please test your headset again and let us know if that changed the issue at all.

Looking forward for your immediate response. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

i will try this during the week.

cheers

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but those steps have been taken countless times by many of us, add on rolling back drivers and experimenting with Oculus dev settings and we've covered every inch of ground we can as a community. Only way this is going to get fixed is if the developers of the product fixes it on their end, any other solution to this point has been temporary at best.

Unfortunately Oculus support haven't done a thing about it and there's no indication they will any time soon either.

Best of luck though.

Yes, I have tried that myself as well - restarting and even reseting to factory defaults will fix it temporarily, once you start playing over Link, it will start happening again.

My thinking behind this is - since not everyone is affected - that there is some kind of conflict in the way the picture either gets compressed or transmitted over the cable, and it might be a Driver of sorts, or some kind of software, that may cause a packet to drop - which will cause the white stripe.

I have played lately with Virtual Desktop, and I have not experienced any issues through there, so it is clearly a software issue.

Sadly I am afraid we are such a small group of people, that unless it gets fixed 'accidentally' somewhere, there is not much we can do.

I wonder, if any of you might have another PC that is capable of VR that if we could test it on completely different machine?

There is possibly some app or some driver that we are all using which is affecting us.

This problem looks like this

I have some thoughts about this issue.
Maybe it is caused by:
1. Multiple GPUs in system.
2. Afterburner or similar program.
3. Overheating of GPU.
4. New drivers of GPU.

BatyaFFBK:

1. I have only single GPU - not even my CPU has integrated one

2. Using MSI Afterburner, do you? - would you mind testing uninstalling afterburner and giving it a test?

3. 100% not an issue with my own system

4. Possibly - would you be able to try and uninstall your drivers for GPU using https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html and then installing only the freshest and latest drivers?

Could you write down your PC spec?

I am on Ryzen 7 - 3700x, 32gb Ram@3200mhz and rtx2070

I don't think it is hardware problem. It is software. Do you have this issue?

I will try anything. I will also try to change GPU and will reply you later.

Wonder if we could get a guinea pig who could try completely reinstalling Windows to see if it will still be happening with fresh install of windows.

Another thought - how do you have your Link cable connected to the PC? Do you have it connected to mobo, GPU or external usb-c port?

Connected directly to the USB-C/3.1 port on my ROG Strix Z390-F mobo using a 6m active USB3 cable (which has been working perfectly fine since last year). I'll try one of the front USB3 ports today

I built an entirely new computer to try and get rid of this issue. Clean install of windows, clean drivers. Everything.

Intel i9-11900K

Geforce 3080 FE

64GB 3600

Thunderbolt 4 and all other USB ports tried.

Previous Machine:

i9-9900

Geforce 2080/ Also tried a Radeon 560

32GB

Thunderbolt 3(USB-C)

The issue persists. Nothing has worked. This is clearly a Oculus software issue.

To anyone without this issue: maybe they're  playing games that aren't very demanding. Beat Saber over link doesn't use the same resources as a Simulator.

Does this issue occur when you use steam VR?

bonjour,

oui

Same here - both SteamVR and OculusVR API's are throwing the same white bar.

mark_antony007 Thanks a ton for that info - that helps a lot - and also does not help at all:D

Only thing we know for a fact is, that it does not matter on machine or system - so its clearly oculus only issue, and only they can solve it.
