White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Yup, I've had 2 headsets. Same problem persists.

I thought I had it fixed. I did a complete wipe of my system, oculus, & steam drives. Full clean installs of everything and it was working great for 2 days. Today after work I played one round of Project Wingman and right before the second round it started happening again. I HATE MY QUEST!

What about the ticket I filed in early march, that you later chose to simply ignore? You want to help and work together to solve this? What a joke.

Thank you very much for taking this issue into consideration.
I had no hope of solving this problem on my own given everything I have tried before (several full reinstalls of the system, leaving all settings to default, installing nothing other than what is necessary to make this game work on the PC), reseting my Quest 2 to factory settings (it has no other effect than wasting time and my progress in my other games), and the support has absolutely no idea what else to offer because they also need the support of the developers to be effective.
This spring I even changed my PC (except the graphics card = RTX 3090, the power supply, and my hard drives), and immediately after installing Windows, the game and Oculus Link the problem was back after a few minutes.
So I will open a ticket as you suggest, and do all the logs you might need.
Thank you again for your help.

Hi,

The message that you quoted and according to which you made your tests was poster more than 6 months ago...

At that time, unchecking the public testing box had replaced the version 24 of Oculus Link which was available in beta, by version 23, the one used with this option unchecked.

Since I had the problem for the first time with the arrival of V24, I had confirmation that a return to V23 completely solved the problem (in MY case).

I've been able to play about fifty hours without problem once back to V23, before the official version became V24, then it was impossible for me to refuse the update, and immediately after V24 install, I experienced the issue in a few minutes .

There is no point in doing the test now, just maybe to change the V33 by the V32 (to be checked), but since all the versions of Oculus Link are problematic (in MY case) from V24, switching between V32 and V33 is useless.

In my case it would be really interesting to be able to use the Quest 2 in V23, because I am convinced that the problem would be solved. This could be a very interesting test for developers if it's confirmer once again, and if they really wish to try to understand where the problem is coming from.

Same issues here. Seems to happen with steamvr and not the oculus games within OVR

September 8, 2021

I get this issue while still in Oculus home before opening steam or any games.

Hi,

Same problem here with DiRT Rally 2.0. (Quest 2, NVidia RTX 3080, Oculus link cable):

Weird looking "Screen botton milky line/band" after playing the game during few minutes.

As Devs seems to be looking at it, I hope that this gets fix on next Quest 2 update.

Thank you

I've submitted a ticket one week ago (ticket n°3256077).

Before submitting the ticket, I didn't have time to play the game in order to have this issue, so I did not attach a log.

I did it today, I had the issue several times, maybe every 5 minutes or more often... then I lauched OculusLogGatherer.exe program and got a log.

How can I attach my log to my ticket ???

I can't see my ticket in my account, I have no link to it.

Thanks.

Hi Sp0uny,

Just FYI - I logged a ticket also, just reply with the zip to the support person through your email.

As a bit more context for everyone else with this issue - I did NOT have the issue on my old PC - an i7 6700k with an 1080ti.

I built a brand new PC last weekend - fresh windows install, 3080ti and i9 10850- this bar on the bottom quarter of the screen was immediately evident as an issue.

I found this thread and also logged an issue with oculus support. Theyve come back with a range of suggestions (update USB drivers, change power performance settings, stop anti-virus software running, try different Nvidia drivers), and nothing has worked.

I've also tried experimenting with different options in the BIOS for 'legacy usb' support and similar - none of this has made a difference.

As a final note, I also tried using it wirelessly and it is NOT an issue over wifi. Though I would never use this as the graphics quality is terrible, especially in darker scenes.

I was planning on buying an oculus quest 2 (borrowing the father in laws at the moment); but I definitely wont be buying one if these issues are not resolved soon.

I have had the same issues. I am not rich and I saved for months to get a 3060, new cpu, upgraded board and power supply, and now its running worse with the quest 2 then my 580 saphire I had in there before. White bands on the bottom, games feeling fairly sluggish, and No one is really replying to me from oculus about it. I think It might be time for me to save for a Valve index or move onto a different brand of headsets if they dont get this patched up for new RTX cards. It is ridiculous to me why a more powerful card and system runs worse on it. Seems like a lot of the new patches for the quest 2 have just been breaking stuff all around. browsers, the link and clicking with the laser pointer breaks, the white banding, sluggish framerates with a better card. I hate how slow oculus moves to fix anything, it drives me bonkers.

Hey all! I'm sadly also adding my name to the list of people with this issue. I also plan to raise as ticket asap šŸ™‚

I'm also adding my name to this ticket.  I've experienced this issue for about 8 months now..  I'm planning on putting in a third ticket on this and asking for an immediate escalation.  This has gone on long enough.  I bought a Quest 2 in an attempt to resolve the problem and of course it didn't as it's software related.  We need to get resolution on this.

Hey Everyone! Thank you for all the great input in helping uncover this issue. We are always happy to seek a resolution!

We have a few questions to help us get down to the root cause:

  • Are you using just Oculus content or do you have any 3rd party platforms installed?
  • Does this happen on just Oculus content?
  • Is it visible on the Home screen as well as in games or apps?
  • Take a few pictures of what you are seeing by holding down the proximity sensor and turning your flash OFF on your phone.
  • Please include these photos when you submit a ticket to (Oculus Support) šŸ“ø
